2this day, I still cry. Bad, bad memories. The song explains the exact words that were in my head when I was a kid & a teen. Being clumsy, walking in2 the door again, fell of the ladder or my bicycle. Even in High School, "don't ask me how I am, I am fine! Lets just go back 2your house & hang out." Its life lasting no matter how old U are. :-(

Thank U CMPATT4. It was my father that was guilty of the abuse.& Toby Gibson, here's a simple message from me; THIS did not start in my teens. It started when I was 8yrs old. It ended on my 17th birthday when I graduated 6months early from High School, moved out & never came back until my Mother finally divorced him. So, when a person express's the words that I did about this song, "Luka" , U might want 2really try 2read the comment this person wrote & realize it's not an "awkward teen" issue. Your comment was truly insulting! But, we have freedom of speech, so that is the price I pay. I guess.

+Claudia Dogmom So sorry to hear your childhood was like this Claudia. :( That is awful, I am glad (but saddened that you had to make your own move, so young - to escape). P.S. "Not my business anyway..." - but I think Toby Gibson *completely* misread your comment, & took your words at literal, face value (!?) - maybe he does the song too! :/ (But anyway, point was, I genuinely don't think he was being malicious?) - unless he's got a nasty streak - then again I get 'reprimanded' for seeing the good in people... Hope you've been able to put that part of your life somewhere to carry on. I had some elements (plus other, different parts), and I know, that no, it never does leave you x

Almost every time I hear this song, tears come to my eyes. The only other song like it that I know of is Pat Benatar's "Hell is for Children" (which was controversial at the time; I guess some people just misunderstood what it was about). "Luka" is more powerful for me though, because it's more understated. And after countless listens, the line "I guess I'd like to be alone / With nothing broken, nothing thrown" hit me a little harder this time: Better to be completely alone than beaten. I hope this masterpiece stays heard for a long, long time. At least until no one knows what it's referring to -- because it's not happening anymore.

Kevin Adams ? Not her life, or even of a boy she knew. She overheard the name (near her apartment), and made a song 'around it' - a story of an abused boy. She (Suzanne Vega) later learned that the chap had (some years later) taken his girlfriend to the apartment nearby where Ms Vega also used to live, to show her, and that the song was titled because of him.
