When I was 10yrs old, another little 10yr-old was murdered by her father - it made such an impression on me that, almost 50 years later, I can still remember her name and see her face. The first time I realised it wasn't only strangers who could do you harm. This brought back that memory - Maria Cauldwell, someone still remembers you.

@@jonoverby4079 Better yet, teach children to love Christ before the world teaches them not to love Christ. We would have a lot less monsters. I'm not at all saying Christians or those who are church inclined can not be monsters. Those people are still human, they will fall and fail miserably.. I am saying having a genuine love for Christ, someone will be a lot less likely to turn out to be a monster. That is the way it works.
I am a single father and though I was mentaly abused and terrorised in my young days with an alcoholic father I give my son the best love and childhood I can. He is a happy 13 year old boy now. @@Dreamex12 Of course music can make you feel something. But there's a difference between feeling something and typing something like this in a KZread comment section because you want attention. If he didn't want attention he would have kept his thoughts to himself. But he wanted attention. That's the only reason he typed a comment like that on a public forum. That's the way I see it. Regardless, your opinion is obviously different. And I respect your opinion. But think about it. Why would he comment something like that if it was just a personal feeling the song gave him?

First heard this song when we were just beginning to take in foster children, some of whom had been terribly abused, and it greatly impacted me. Knew we were doing what we were meant to do. This song still brings tears to my eyes. I WAS this child in the 70's and early 80's who had the welts on my ass from my dad's thin belt to prove it. It cut like a razor and I bled. I went to school with many black and blue marks all over my legs and had a gym teacher ask me what they were from. I lied and said I fell down the stairs (back in my head I knew if I told the truth, I'd get more of the same). Hey nothing broken, nothing torn...it's not your business anyways. This song came out in 1987...I wept when I first heard it as I am now. I felt like someone else knew exactly what I was going through and I was not alone. That alone gave me strength to find my way out of those times. So thank you...it's been long overdue.

No problem Nan, I can't stand people who are cruel to animals either. But the only time I fell out with my mum was when she asked me this hypothetical. If a runaway bus was heading for the family's pet dog and a human child I didn't know, and I could only step in and save one of them, which would I save? She didn't speak to me for a couple of days when I said the human child :) It's all a judgement call I suppose.

OK all you mid 40's-50 people, if you could go back in time to relive the 80's, BUT you would lose 15 to 20 years of your life, would you it??? The 80's were a unique and amazing decade. The music! The parties! The dances! The friends (many of which you still have 30 years later). Even the movies (ET, The Breakfast Club, Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Dirty Dancing ("Nobody puts Baby in the corner!")!! Now that you know that the worst that can happen to you is to be grounded for a week or two, would you have done more than you did the first time?? I gotta say YES to both questions. Many of us want to get back to the big hair, the leg warmers, and the jean jackets! The 80's were the last decade that, as a kid, we could stay out until dark, safely go into neighbors houses, and there was no reason to get out of bed if you fell asleep and forgot to lock the front door. We didn't have XBox or Wees, or cell phones. If we had a day of technological gaming, it was playing Frogger, Space Invaders, or Pong! We were totally happy playing hide and seek or Cowboys and Indians (I'm part Native American, though being an Indian never bothered me) and we never heard of being PC. We made complex tunnels in the snow banks, used ropes to swing 5 or 6 kids at a time 20 to 40 feet in the air (and we all lived when we fell off!), and fed marshmallows to raccoons from the back door steps (that ended when most of the Northeastern Raccoons were killed off when the rabies scare hit) . Some of us with a lot of patience even taught chipmunks to eat nuts out of our hands or on our shoulders. Life was easier, and a hell of a lot more fun than any kid has today. Why? Because we were safe. Children could wander the neighborhood, ride our bikes along roadsides, and enjoy running through connected yards sometimes until 9 or 9:30! To put it simply, we were safe. Everyone knew everyone but maybe it was because we could go OUTSIDE (and we preferred it that way)!

Me too. Back in the 90s I always jive on this song. Not knowing, that this song is also about me. Growing as battered child. I certainly understand every lyrics on it. It is really hard growing up and these things will affect you in latter part of your life. Having diagnosed with Major depression and General anxiety disorder. It is so hard. To all parents out there. Don't physically abused or mentally abused your kids they will still carry it on when they grow.
I believe that somewhere in the world, there are still people who feel the same deep and sincere emotions that I feel when I listen to this song.

One of the best songs ever. A Tragic song about Abuse. A song of such heartbreaking Truth. Beautiful Guitar Rhythm and Melody. Stop abuse and Love one another.🙏🏻🎸🧡🌹
This song would be playing on the radio back in 80s when I was a child growing up in a dysfunctional family. English is not my first language so back on those days I could not understand the lyrics. What is in interesting is that somehow I could sense that the song would talk about something I was going through and then I wasn't alone. It would bring me some comfort and peace. It still does. This song has a soul.

I grew up in a perfect little family. My parents adopted me when I was a small baby and took care of me in the best way possible. When I listened to this song for the first time while being able to understand the lyrics ( I am not a native english speaker ) , it hits me hard, because the way Suzanne Vega created this song I was able to really understand that not everyone had a childhood like I had. And it terrified me, that, in an other timeline, this could have happened to me too. I've been a lifelong fan of Suzanne Vega since then...
