Not only does he demonstrate a careful, considered, methodical approach to survival, he never fails to also demonstrate respect for the land and the people and culture of that land (and in this particular case, the religion). There is no need to respect the culture for itself, or the religion at all. Respect the people and their free will, and their customs which aren't morally compromising, and the fact of their beliefs. I would not perform the rites of any of these pagan cultures under any circumstance. Follow the dictates of your conscience and not the dictates of random cultures.

And he went into tiger and leopard country alone. As someone who lives in tiger, leopard, and bear country I know full well that no other 'survival' expert would do that.

This was the only episode where I actually legit feared for Les Stroud. Every other episode was about surviving harsh weather and climate, finding food, building shelter, etc. But this episode was entirely about predators hunting you down.

There is a reason why Les is the best in the Biz. He could have easily never mentioned the guards who kept watch over him but he kept things real as he always does. The reality is that going into that forest with well-documented man-eating tigers alone would be a deadly decision, to say the least. I think this is one of his most impactful episodes because if a world-renowned survival expert needs armed guards to safely exist in a place your everyday adventure junky has no business anywhere near. Thank you Les for keeping it real and saving lives to this very day.

I still remember when he found a "washed up" working (!) lighter on the rocks of a beach at a deserted island. Brilliant.

This is honestly the only episode that I've watched that had me nervous and scared for Les. The thought of a lurking tiger is terrifying.

I did see a wild tiger in india in a national park - guide told me 2 or 3 tourists go missing like just gone every year ... I suggested single file through jungle was not a good idea .. he just laughed oh yes sir ..

Mr. Stroud has done a really nice job in these episodes. This show brought me closer to my young son back when the show started and my wife suddenly decided to end our marriage. So my son, having to deal with divorcing parents at just 6 years old had a really hard time, but the show's content is so interesting with such beautiful scenery my son who had to deal with ADD besides his parents separating, was totally captivated. 15 years later, now at age 21, he still brings up how this show helped occupy his thoughts and his emotional pain. I told him about the directors cut and he's all over those now. All thanks to this great man, Mr. Stroud.

It's such a shame that your son at that age had to go through those tough times. Sadly so many couples end marriages sometimes for the wrong reasons and the kids if any, have to suffer. You say she suddenly ended it which tells me she had other plans instead of trying to work things out. It happens so frequently nowadays. Back then people stayed together through the bad and tough times and somehow eventually worked it out. This world has changed so drastically and people don't seem to want to put any effort into something that's supposed to be a binding contract with God. I'm glad you and your son found something in common and this helped him through the tough times, as well as yourself.

@Poppy333 Thank you for the kind word and empathy for a total stranger. My son had a hard time, as can be expected, as did I, and the fact is that marriage means nothing to some people. It's disposable, as everything else in this society is becoming. I did express how much Survivorman meant during that difficult period; it's such a great show to watch with an inquisitive child. TV shows having substance and good content are becoming rare...again thanks for your comment...I realize that I'm not the only person to go through this horrible experience. I guess that we can only change what's within our control. I just feel for the children going through it - they are the victims - and that's what truly sucks. Best, HK

yeah man, Bengal Tigers are the most dangerous of any big cat on the planet, damn near perfect apex predators, and Leopards are not far behind at all, they are just as deadly even though they aren’t as large and if i had to survive for a few days out in the jungle with them and saw scale viper snakes, king cobras and tons of other endemic life on my own without any protection i’d probably have an anxiety attack lmao

The fact that tigers are so big and powerful, agile and dexterous, have a curious nature and can squeeze through many holes, can climb trees and swim across rivers makes it the most complete apex predator on the planet...the only thing it can't do it stand up on its hind legs and tap dance...but imagine if it could! I cannot express into words how grateful I am that Les has put all these survivorman episodes up on his channel. I couldn't tell you how many hours I've spent watching over the last 3 weeks since I discovered this channel. I have to say that the director commentaries are by far my favorite, and can only hope that they keep on coming. Thank you Les!!!! You are the man.

And to think Les couldn't even do this if he didn't have it written into his contract that he will retain the rights to all of his work, a thing most people didn't bother doing because they generally would pay you a bit more if you let the network or producer keep the content. And at the time most people also believed that they wouldn't ever use their shows, it was such a hassle and you needed a lot of resources to produce DVDs or air stuff on TV, most people were convinced it was a better idea to just get royalties every time the show aired or a DVD set was reissued. Les probably felt the integrity of his show was too important to let somebody else control when and where it was shown, and he (correctly, IMHO) predicted he could have way more freedom to make his work available to a wider audience in the future.

Les Stroud truly is the Anthony Bourdain of the survival world. He is cool, respectful, curious and entertaining. A true gentleman global citizen.

Either Les is an excellent actor and deserves an academy award or he is scared shitless in this episode.

He was paralyzed with fear the entire episode and rightly so. One place I can think of which is even more dangerous than this would Sundarband forest. Tigers there are completely fearless and unusually aggressive. Going there is truly a suicide mission.

This is one of the episodes I REALLY want Les to do a commentary on.

Trust me dude. I have spent a lot of my life in these jungles, usually in the safety of a jeep safari. But even then, the stories I have heard of tigers and other cats is simply crazy. There are some books written by Jim corbette (maneaters of kumaon, Man eating leopards of Rudraprayag etc) are just bone chilling. It is a myth that big cats don't attack human settlements. Its about chance and a weak prey.

@@scentlessapprentice88 The mask helps a bit since big cats need to be stealthy. There are a lot of things the locals follow. Like There is usually an update every morning from rangers about the movement of the big cats, sloths (if they are spotted), packs of wild dogs and elephant herds. Locals also don't venture out too far into the forest. And they usually do this in pairs. One keeps a watch, the other does the gathering or chopping wood. Sometimes they light fires if they have to stay longer. Fire is one of the best deterrent to any animal. But locals usually don't light fires in the dry season.

@@scentlessapprentice88 What has also happened over the ages is that 70% of Indian forests are now Urban areas. And Tiger conservation efforts has concentrated tigers in a smallish area. That's why coming across a tiger in these forests is more common as opposed to when the whole country was a big forest. Les Stroud is quite lucky he got out unscathed.

In America in places like California for example more and more people are getting attacked by mountain lions and such because the suburban sprawl is encroaching on their territory. Humans want to live close to nature but don't want the problems and predators that come with it. We just keep making their territory smaller and smaller until a confrontation is inevitable

@@scentlessapprentice88 There are solutions to such problems, but the human species won't be able to follow it. Sadly, eventually these big cats (and other predators) will go extinct. Tigers are highly endangered. from millions of tigers at the start of the century to a few thousand left. Even if you have great conservation practices, where will they be housed. And man-animal conflict will continue where 99.9% of the time, the animal has to go.

Les stroud is the best survival expert on KZread that's to me. Just from watching his videos got me into survival now Iv been training for 10 years now it's awesome to learn all new techniques

I love you Les, you motivate me when I feel down and remind me to appreciate the moment, small pleasures and the majesty of nature so thank you, Survivor Man has been an anchor for me for decades now

Massive respect, Indian Forest is soo dangerous, crazy that locals have survived there for so many thousands of years.

same. i bought the show this week cause I just had to see it. It was my first time seeing Les wigged out. Not being the apex predator on scene will do that too you, In the Georgia swamp episode, Les often had has back to the gator infested swamp, but here there was a man-eater tiger on the hunt and Les couldnt shake his nerves. 'How can i do with a 500 lbs bengal tiger looking for a meal only yards away...'

I think the guards are there to protect him and the precious rhinos. Very few but still there and this jungle is spread in 4 countries Nepal, India ,Bhutan and Bangladesh. Lots of illegal hunters and smugglers

I’ve watched, pretty well, everything Les has done. For some reason, this episode has me concerned for him. You could really hear the fear in his voice when he heard that tiger. Glad your still with us Les!! 🙏🏼

What i love about this man is that he isnt trying to be anyone but himself... the survivorman

When I think of great Canadians, I think of you Les. You aren't overly confident or cocky even though you are a master at what you do. You respect nature, other cultures and peoples different views. I've been a long time fan and i'm always proud to say that I come from the same province as the Survivorman! Thanks for the great content as always.

Les played a big role in my life at one point for the very reasons you listed. He is tough, but not mean. He is rough and tumble but not aggressive. Very balanced person. It meant a lot at the time (early 20's) when I was trying to grow my confidence, that Les admitted his intense fear *while continuing into the situation causing him fear*. He doesn't complain either. Just moves on. I love that. Great man he is.

By far the most nervous I have ever seen him in any of his survival surroundings. I love the show and the fact that he is doing it ALONE. Doing double the work for all the camera set-ups and retrievals. Les you are "The Man", Rock on.

I'm from the U.S. and having been watching your shows since I was a kid. My wife's Indian, and I spent a few years living in Kolkata. I'd love to see you do another few episodes in India--maybe Kerala, Odisha, or the Sundarbans!

If it was more than a week then those places would mean eventual death but Les can find enough water to stave off death for a week anywhere and doesn't even need to eat

Can’t tell you why but this is my favorite episode out of all he has done!! Love the threat of tigers and having the mask on backwards to protect something attacking him from behind

I cannot get enough of these videos. I remember watching them back in the day and being enamored. Life went on, I would see Les doing interviews online and I would watch, but other than that I had largely moved on. However, when he uploaded these video's I had absolutely no choice but to watch. Les has so much passion for his craft, so much respect for the wilderness (and all that encompasses) and so much energy for life. I see a man who is truly loving his life when I watch these videos. So much respect to Les.

For the sloth bear and leopard; maybe a Kriss Vector in 10mm, longest barrel version, and full-auto. The 10mm is a great cartridge though, especially out of longer barrels. And def a .375H&H or .458 Lott for the elephants and bengal tiger.

Fantastic video from Les! My God Les you are crazy man! Thank you so much for not making us pay for your videos. I have been staying up late on work nights watching these. My boss may not appreciate you, but I sure as heck do. You my friend truly make you tube a better place because of your generosity!

That mini savannah les walked into was a killing field for tigers for sure. The energy there literally screamed of animal death. Was I the only one that just could see a tiger running down its prey there?

Thank you for showing me a side of India I have not seen before and in such a respectful way.

the shoulder tatoo stars les has are the coolest tattoos any man has... "what are those tattoos?" "oh these? from an isolated tribe who have hardly had any interaction with modern people or white people, i got the confidence and respect of the medicine men there by going through their rites and they gave me these tattoos to identify that." les should be doing dos equis commercials

its cool that Les is transparent about some of the "advantages" he gets. even if its just having locals keeping an eye on him at a distance in the tiger zone.

@@friendlyatheist9589 in india there are several types of armed forces dedicated to forest department only. Some protects us from predators when we go hiking like this, some are for smugglers, some are for mavoists, some are for protection biodiversity such as rehabilitation of wild cat which step out from forest.

I lived in India as young boy in foothills of Himalayas all the memories come back it is a magical land probably the nicest place to survive it is spiritual oriented that is the key in India

@@shanaguilar8352 I was born in Punjab but lived with my Grandma who was teacher ( sewing ) in Himachal Pardesh and many times was stationed to remote villiages I went to elementary school there you are right it is beautiful my memories from there still with me I did go back and travel there and just wished to live there it is so nice ( I think you have some special 'destiny' if you are there )

It's so unusual to see Les shooken up, but rightfully so, Tigers are absolutely terrifying. No other large cat comes close to the sheer power and stealth of a Tiger. The standard African lion wouldn't even be a challenge to a Siberian or Bengal tiger, if the Tiger got fatally injured in the fight it would be due to sheer chance. Thanks for the content, knowing you're still going strong is great!

The worst ones in these jungles are the sloth bears and a pack of wild dogs. Even tigers steer clear of them. There is documentation of Tigers being hunted and eaten by a sloth bear. A pack of wild dogs on a hunt too can injure and kill a tiger. Their numbers usually range between 10 to 50.. even 100s earlier this century.

The lion has a big advantage though: its mane. Cats mostly kill by going for the neck, and the tiger would have a really hard time getting through that thick mane of a male lion. At the same time, the tiger's neck is fully exposed with little protection. I think the fight would be much closer than you believe.

@@KalpeshPatel78 Hi. Could you do read wiki on sloth bear. Its just one of tiger prey. not the other way around. Just look at size and its also a bear not same as tenacity of a big cat that have more muscle per pound.

@@newoneserchin4010 the bear dogs..... hell pigs and the terror birds of the prehistoric times were the true killer animals.... the hell pig was alive in an eat or be eaten world in America and was the top dog for literally just under 20million years.... they ate the crescent horned baby rhino 🦏..... they were beaten to there food by the introduction of the bear dogs who came over a newly formed ice bridge in the ice age.... the bear dogs worked as a team to kill prey much bigger and stronger than them.... while the terror bird used its massive beak to snap the back of the long extinct hangman horse..... these animals were more of a predator than any tiger.... the hell pig alone was a lot bigger than a fully grown man.... we should be glad that these animals aren’t around today

@@killerboy4441 Not really although the lion has a mane. Lion don't stand a chance against both siberian tiger and Bengal tiger. Thats the reason why lions hunt in packs and not solo while tiger hunt solo. Especially the siberian tiger that beast is terrifying

I do appreciate how Les respects not only the land but the culture of the ppl who reside there. It’s all about respect when it boils down to it and Les certainly demonstrates this. Good on ya Les

This is for some reason my favorite video, 4th time watching it.

Watching this episode about big cats, reminded me of the time i was stalked by a big mountain lion. It’s crazy how stealthy and quiet big cats really are.

I had 2 of them in north Dakota follow me, next day in the river bottom one track was as big as my hand the other one I could stick my boot across, 12 x 12, I had no idea they had feet that big, freaked me out and I was walking around in the dark, I almost was lunch.

he throwing shade at bear for being a pseudo survivalist but then carries a life straw, pot, lighter, fire gel, knife, paracord, uses a built home and had ARMED GUARDS following him the whole time lol this wasn't really a "survival" episode at all just a guy walking around in the woods

Just recently found this program again, I have flashbacks from hearing the intro. Thanks for sharing Les, It's truly amazing to find a tv program that does actual survivor, instead of acting like it!

I've been so depressed today, nothing better than watching Les Stroud Survivor man episode.

Les Stroud... Survivorman, you were the first human tv personality my son ever got to liking when he was small. He was all cartoons until he started watching your show. He is 18 now... when he was 4 we used to watch your shows all the time on tv and he loved you, loved your show. Good times.

Oh that scene killed me. One second he is talking about not to look like the prey when walking through the woods the next second.. Holy crap!! Run!!! save yourselves , they coming!!

Les stroud Is the best. There is no other that comes close. He's s real person witch is hard to find in the survival space.

This is one of the few people I've actually written articles about. I have adopted many of the sayings I hear on these shows. Survival has become a metaphor for me

These videos bring back a lot of memories as a kid watching Survivorman and thinking what could be possible as an adult.

"The most comprehensive study of deaths due to tiger attacks estimates that at least 373,000 people died due to tiger attacks between 1800 and 2009 averaging about 1800 kills per year, the majority of these attacks occurring in South and Southeast Asia." Tiger threat is very real!

Les was my childhood hero. It’s so great to relive my childhood and touch up on some knowledge by watching these now in my twenties. No shade to other survival shows but it’s a breath of fresh air to rewatch these. Thanks for posting these Mr. Stroud!!

One of my favorite episodes! Funny as hell after that close call that send him up into the tree the show ends and I'm pretty sure it wasn't 7 days lol. Les was like hell with this episode I'm out of here right now!! Tiger be like don't leave so soon Les, get rid of your armed guards and stick around for dinner...

I used to love this show as a little kid.... now.. as an adult.. I love it even more. Les keeps my love for the wilderness alive when I am unable to be out enjoying it myself. What a show.
