If more customers complained and stop buying junk, the quality would be better and so would their terrible warranties.

Just a little tip...when you are reinstalling screws that have loosened up take a toothpick and break it off in the hole and it will keep the screw tighter. Also works for stripped holes too...that way you dont have to relocate holes, especially where you cant make new holes...

Fill the hole entirely with toothpicks and wood glue, (I've also used 3m 5200 for a really permanent repair). Reinstall before it sets up.

Thanks for reassuring us that we are not the only ones that have similar problems with our 2019 28RB Flying Cloud. I discover the nuts had come off the bottom Door Hinge after finding it lose after our last cross country. The one posted video I was able to find had a guy cut holes in the inner Aircraft aluminum to access. If this happens to you (lots of miles and bumps) drill out the rivets and remove screws for any trim or in our case the bench seat. I was able to pull the aluminum away far enough for new stainless screws and lock nuts. No big holes required !! Used Blue Loctite in addition. Local True Value hardware had everything. New rivets and all back together. Lots of videos on shimming the door which was critical to success. Safe travels and thanks again

Thanks for watching and for the comments! It's hard to believe this video was almost a year ago. We've adjusted the door a few times since this video also. Fortunately, we have one where they tac-welded the nuts on the backside so there is no risk of them falling down.

You know it might just be me, but I recall my parents in the 70's buying a 27 foot Prowler trailer. Airstream was of course around then too, but I can't recall a time where nearly anything on that trailer broke or came apart or caused us consternation. Six kids, and my mom, and dad. My grandfather owned a 24 foot Coachmen. I have a feeling that attention to quality in these times is just not what it used to be, and while some things might break, you shouldn't have to address this many things on what was - at least at some time in the past - a very reputable well built trailer. To me, saying that things are going to break just excuses poor workmanship.

Hi! Thanks for the note. We agree that the trailers built in the 60/70s were quite durable. Brads family had one when he was young. Those trailers typically had much less “stuff” in them than they do now. I have yet to find a mechanic or technician in any manufacturer or RV repair facility that has found a “bulletproof” or without issues. I was just talking with a Airstream technician the other day who has been working on them for 25+ years. He said that he has never worried about the structural integrity of any of the travel trailers, but has noticed that some of the cabinetry in certain models has had issues and that some of the latches and clasps have had issues. The main problem he has with them come from other manufacturers (refrigerator, AC, water heater, water pumps, etc.)

They don’t make em like they used to. And if they did no one would buy them (well, maybe some would). These new rigs have lots more fancy tech and amenities than even our only 10 year old AS does. Much more to go wrong.

Amen brother! Not to be too critical but I have watched so many videos from RV owners who complain about the poor build quality of their brand new rigs and after spending tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy them, they then must spend inordinate amounts of more money and precious time repairing them. And that's the reason why they have to wait so long for a repair appointment. The dealers can't keep up with the workload because the things are constantly breaking down. I lived and traveled for three years in a van with my disabled son and, for openers, we never paid to stay anywhere and aside from the usual mechanical upkeep of a van, we spent our time enjoying the great outdoors with zero repairs to our living space that I built out myself. You have to embrace a more minimalist lifestyle but we were never more than a day's drive from a Planet Fitness for showers and I carry an outdoor shower tent for dry boondocking. We have a 12 volt refrigerator, lighting, propane heater and stove. No plumbing, no intricate wiring, and the van is made of welded steel and not plywood, glue, and screws so nothing is going to shake loose and we traveled many bumpy roads. There are also many parking restrictions on RVs that we don't have. I can park my van anywhere a car can and my 2wd van's ground clearance got us up some gnarly forest service roads where you could never take an RV. No Walmart parking lots for us. The choice is between expensive, faulty creature comforts and limited accommodations or a more simple but reliable lifestyle that allows for more time traveling and enjoying the outdoors. @@ThirteenAdventures We are on our 4th travel trailer having started with a pop-up A-frame then graduating through 3 full size travel trailers. 3rd party vendors build most components, so its easy to blame them when they fail. But my experience shows the trailer manufacturer who is to blame for sloppy or downright incorrect installation. Read the blogs. Refrigerators are a great example. They are seldom installed correctly and as a result they don't cool properly. The appliance manufacturer gets the bad rap and the trailer manufacturers don't change or accept responsibility for their sloppy work. After all, most owners have no idea what is correct and what is not. Our current trailer is an Outdoors RV. It retailed for over 5o grand so it isn't a cheapo. Over 3 seasons I have had to made dozens of repairs, and most of them have been the fault of the trailer manufacturer. Loose screws (from holes that were drilled too large) was rampant. The refer didn't cool when it was over 80 degrees. Installations were loose or crooked. Wiring connections were sloppy and loose. Windows jam and leak because they were installed poorly. I could go on and on. After 3 seasons of use, our trailer is just now in top condition that I think it should be when new. It took me many hours to fix the problems. Its a sad commentary on the industry.

We had the good fortune to buy a 10 year old AS that was meticulously maintained. So many issues had been dealt with. Still - sometimes covers fall off and doors swing open. If you aren’t “handy” don’t buy an RV. Seriously - no shame - it’s just not going to be good. Everyone is aware of the supply chain and labor issues right now. So if you don’t want to deal with these kinds of things you should probably hold off until it sorts out. If it ever does. This is a great “what to expect “ video. Good job.

Took delivery of our FB27 international Dec15 2022. That first night home in NH it rained and snowed heavily. Next morning went in to look round the inside of the door was a frozen icicle with a skating rink on tahoe floor. The top of the latch side of the door was not making contact with the gasket. i watched a video of guy from a Texas Airstream service department use a block of 2x4 in the door and a rubber mallet to basically end the door to the shape of the door opening. I just used my hands to push on the door while the 2x4 was between the door and frame until the door touched the gasket all around. I used a piece of paper to check that it was snug. in the Spring the maine dealer took the door apart to remove the wet insulation and lube all the moving parts.

Good video. I am old, but have traveled via AS or other RV for over 50 years and try to do most repairs myself. We have a 2020 FC 28'. Of particular interests in this video is the front AC bolts. I had a noise, not a bad noise but a new noise. Try sealing the interior duct work, no joy. Then went up and found one bolt out, the other was ok, but not tight. I put the one in and tightented the other, but I am considering pulling out and putting lock tight in as I could not get a lock nut on either one. The second is the front door, both upper bolts came loose, I tightened using locktite, but after another 3,000 miles both had come loose and the bottom one is simply spinning - so time to take interior molding off and drill the dreaded 1" hole and replace with a stainless bolt and lock nut. Safe Travels.

We're blessed with a 20 year Cherokee that still looks great and everything has always worked.. several flat tires but everything a ok.. greetings from NC..just one more mile

I have had 2 valve stems that leaked, one was slow leak and other lost air fast, glad I had pressure monitor The rubber molding around the inside wall slide down on our rig as well, had it repaired under warranty. I had some few screws come lose as well on hard ware for drawers as well.

Airstream are the best. But with any camper/trailer/driven RV you should make it a habit of every 3000 miles or so…just tightening everything in the unit. Screws/bolts plastic attachments etc. after first 300 miles also.

After MANY problems and ruined food we replaced out Dometic refrigerator with an Everchill 12 V compressor wired directly to battery. Maintains temp at a constant 38-40 degrees no matter the outside temperature. After putting snap pads on our 2019 Globetrotter I also put one on the tongue jack. Trailer is much more secure and I don’t use as many pads underneath

Hey great video ! & yes they are just like a house that require periods of checking , & a maintenance schedule that comes in your owners manual & as You said most of the stuff is easy for the dyi person. I was fortunate enough to buy my Airstream in 2009 when the market was not so hot & demand was low , & I bought a 22 footer Safari Sport & the only problem I have had was a leak around the rear sky light/ exhaust fan & I took it in the dealer & they fixed it right away but I had leave for a few days back then so I can imagine what it's like now days ! & after that I made it a point of doing any repairs myself & the only other problem I have had is with the original tires which did't even make it 4 years so I went with a higher grade ply tires as well as speed rating & a different manufacture & the travel trailer has been quite trouble free since then ! I just wish they would install a hub meter so you know exactly how many miles your putting on the travel trailer , & thanks for the video.

Having been around these things for most of my life, I have grown comfortable with most maintenance. We have considered replacing our wheels with the 16” rims and a more durable tire. LoLoHo on KZread did this and I think its a good idea. I am putting it off for other upgrades to my truck. Concerning mileage, I agree with you. The truck we drive has a specific screen that tracks the miles on the trailer every time we hook it up. Thank you for your feedback and input.

You could drive your trailer up on to the tire change ramp to increase the height when you dump. That low tank exist is a total pain in the butt!

You could try some locktite on screws that have loosened or carry a tube of silicone Sealant apply to screw thread when you retightening. Silicon bead might hold that fridge trim on as well. Best of luck.

That’s awesome! We saw a model from the early 60s yesterday.

All RV's regardless of their supposed quality, will have problems like this. They're mass produced on an assembly line, and get shuffled thru quickly. I sold Winnebago, and as nice as they are, they are not immune from road vibration, plumbing issues and water leaks over time.

Agree on double-sided tape; 3M makes “VHB” tape designed to hold with unusually strong bond

I have 4 spare cabinet latches. I suggest you do the same. They then to break when rolling down rough roads.

Thanks for watching and for your feedback! We dont have it on this rig but have had it on previous ones. If I were doing it on this one, I would put it on the rear AC because its smaller BTU and use a smaller generator. FYI, it does void the warranty of the AC, but can easily be removed and restored to factory set up should you have any issues.

Add to your list The water inlet is plastic Had water behind my toilet The water came from the water Inlet inside the airstream behind The closet back panel It cracked from stress And leak on when hook up to city water And than if you have two shore Power inlet one quiet working Started with flickering light on the microwave Had a bad relay in the panel box

I’ve also seen those inlet valves and water lines crack also but only when it was frozen by improper winterizing. The bad relay is odd. Did you have a surge protector?

Thank you for your vlogs. We have a open range bumper pull that we have brought into dealer for service. One of the items we requested looked at was the furnace. When we go to turn the furnace on it turns on for awhile then stops. The dealer said that we needed to make sure to blow the lines out when we turn it on (which is exactly what they did and it worked but the dealer didn’t let it run long enough). I’m curious if you have had and problems or experience with furnace issues? It’s sounds like you might have some knowledge of it. To avoid bringing this back to the dealer could you bring some light on this problem. Thank you.

It sounds like a temperature sensor to me. If the sensor senses that its at the set temp, then it shuts off. Does the fan keep running for a bit or does it all shut down?

Would you recommend one brand over another? We’re going between airstream and two others. Besides the obvious, what we saw so far in the Airstream was the cupboards and countertops were solid and not the flimsy bottoms in the drawers the latches and hardware are solid just to begin. I’ve had to reinforce the drawer bottoms on my other campers and we now watch what shelves are made of, many were so flimsy i had to adjust how i stores things, even canned goods, because the shelves sag with any weight.

This video was recorded in October of 2021. We have since bought a new Airstream and sold the one in the video. We have no plans to own any other brand going forward. Of all models we have had, we have been most happy with the Airstream. For reasons you mentioned and many others. The cost is a bit prohibitive but the quality of the build makes up for it. If you happen to live near/or visiting Jackson Center Ohio, it would be well worth your time to visit the factory and get a tour of how they are built. I then encourage you to head to Elkhart Indiana and do the same with other brands. The average AIrstream requires 350 man hours to build. The average 5th wheel is about 75 man hours.

My 20 27' FC with 2 AC's had the drip hose kinked closed from the factory build. I paid an independent shop to fix it because dealers are so backed up and sloppy workmanship

You just made me realize that I had a similar issue and failed to mention it. The entire bottom side of our rig was replaced and the drain tube was routed odd causing the water to back up under the bottom and dripping from an odd place. I placed a 90 degree hose connector in the end and its now good to go! Its always difficult to get into a dealer for work. This is all dealerships. This is why Ive done my best to fix my own problems.

Started year ago the AC would throwing the breaker on the AC So I replaced that And than having a problem with the receptacle on the outside, burnt mark on the Hot leg, replace and notice corrosion on the wiring Install new shore power inlet Last summer getting ready for Our trip that receptacle quit working Only the front one work Did know I had automatic switch Behind the breaker box We have 2011 flying cloud 27ft I feel switch was the cause of my electrical problem for few years Airstream electrical transfer switch We travel a lot of rough roads It's like an earthquake inside that trailer

It would and I did but failed to mention it in the video.

Honestly that is nothing compared to the problems you would encounter taking a different trailer over a similar 10,000 mile journey. I guess Airstream trailers are higher quality. It is such a pain to breakdown on the rode that this better quality compared with much better value retention probably justifies the price premium, if you can afford it.

Thank you for watching! We couldn't agree more. Weve had multiple rigs from multiple manufacturers and have had significantly more issues. Since this video was published, we have put about 9k more miles on it and have had zero other issues!

Isn't there a waterproofing product from Rhino Linings you apply to the trailer roof. Supposed to last for 10+ years

There is one for the rubber roofs on most box RVs. The Airstream has a painted aluminum roof that’s the same as the sides, just painted white.

grew up in a bambi airstream not to nit pick but you guys need a home not a trailer. try living on a sail boat, between the stink of the ocean and smog over it constant nit picking always.

I’ve found that parking on uneven surfaces causes the door to be slightly off when closing at times. Additionally when parked on level spaces for weeks, the rig will settle slightly and cause the door to be off again.

No offense to you, but as much as those things cost you would think it comes with a maintenance man living underneath it. That's way too many issues for the money. I understand things break, but if I paid $2 million dollars for a house the door knobs better not be coming off in the first year. I mean what's the point in spending more if you're going to have just as many problems as someone spending far less? Did you buy this trailer at the local stop and swap or a dealer? You would think manufacturers would watch videos like these and look for similarities with other owners to address common problems. Seems the only way to avoid these problems is to stop buying Airstreams in addition to not using them. But I do get your point. It's just BS for the money they want for these things.

Hi! This is a very common thought when it comes to Airstream. Considering the terrain we’ve driven over and the miles we’ve driven, these are very minor issues. We have friends who live in VERY pricy motor coaches and they have had more issues than we’ve had. We bought this at a dealer. The other rigs we had (Keystone and Coachmen) had many more issues with cabinetry not working, black/grey tank falling down, slides stop working, leaking roofs and much more. The Airstream cost comes in the “hand built” process. From a structural aspect, I view Airstream as the premier travel trailer. My background in aviation maintenance (airframe and power plant mechanic) demonstrates what lasts and what’s quality. I look at the frame and structure as I did helicopters and airplanes. Airstream travel trailers are built very similar. The minor cabinetry issues are no problem to me. We bought this for longevity, knowing that ALL RV’s have minor issues as you use them.

Mate, this is nothing for traveling 10,000 including some rough roads. I was expecting some major issues, not just loose crews and rivets. You take any other RV over this same route and you’d be addressing 2x-3x more issues, many which were expensive and could not be don’t by the average RVer. I agree for the AS money it would be nice not to have any issues, but that’s just not the way RVing works.

How did you fix your screen?

We have this kit from Amazon amzn.to/3HI7bqz Just take the screen off and put the new one in and trim off the edges.

This one was a 2021. Currently have a 2023

All minor issues every RV will have you may not be the type of person that likes to RV.

Thanks for the note. These issues don’t us bother us at all. We understand that none of these were truly meant for full time living thus some things will wear from repeatedly using and vibrating and shaking.

No one should be surprised. The enormous demand for RVs. Major COVID-related worker and parts shortages. Barely trained factory workers. Pressure to meet the constant demand. It can take one year to fulfill existing orders. So of course quality control has taken a hit. Y’all are paying more, but receiving less. Enjoy.

Thanks for the note. Yes, it has been a very difficult couple of years for the industry at large. Many people rushing into this lifestyle withought fully understanding what they're doing. Social media exacerbates the problems too! While this video was discussing the issues of this rig, we've had 4 different ones in our 7 years of full timing and this one has had the least issues of any of them. We’ve owned 5 different rigs from 5 different manufacturers and the Airstream has been the best by far

Buying into the RV industry mantra of "its an RV, of course it's going to break" is why they keep selling crap that breaks... Almost everything you show here shouldn't happen to an 8 month old, sub 10k mile trailer... geez look at the split door frame! I love that this is a 15min+ video showing how bad the 2020± US RV trailer industry is. They were doing it bad before C19 and they are doing it after. Yugo's were more reliable than this premium line with the Airstream name on it.

@@ThirteenAdventures Look at 2:00min, you'll see the jamb is split about 5-6". This will mean the screw will never stay tight. This splitan often be the result of no (or too small) pilot hole being drilled prior to the initial installation of the screws.

I love how you Airstreamers make excuses for how poor the quality is. AS is best in breed and they have poor quality control. It’s sad….

Thanks for you input. I understand how you feel but of 6 different brands of RV manufacturers I’ve had throughout my life, it’s been the best. Nothing Airstream makes have I had issues with. It’s all been other items installed. The quality of the build of the rig is the best I e ever had by far.

You pay all that money for the Airstream so you think you won't have these kinds of problems...

Every trailer, regardless of brand or cost has issues. As I said, these are minor compared to every other model we’ve owned.
