Surviving -4°F/-20°C No Fire - Cold Tent -Winter Snow Camping in Freezing Temperatures, Hilleberg

Surviving -4°F/-20°C No Fire - Cold Tent -Winter Snow Camping in Freezing Temperatures, Hilleberg Nallo 3. Winter Wild Tent Night Camping in Freezing Temperatures in the North. -20°C/-4°F
This was a most amazingly beautiful camping trip into the beautiful Northern forest. It got very cold, down to minus 20°c or minus 4°f. The scenery was just stunning and I loved every minute of it. I used my backcountry skis to get into the wilderness, passing by a beautiful off grid wooden cabin and further into the wilderness to fine a secluded camp spot.
Thanks for watching and a special thanks to my Patreons!

Hi Jarl, a beautiful campout. Gota love it. Little bit of a test. Looked like the snow may have brought ten degree F or so warmer weather. Always a blessing in winter. Beautiful view between the skis. The sky in the blue hour and later was fantastic. Lots of stars and planets. I thought the food pack may freeze before it was through cooking. The homestead looked familiar. Think you may have been by it during the summer hike a couple years back. I'm glad you got out and did this. Really nice vid. Pretty quick on packing up. My M/C Nomad Sweden friend Robert can do it with a snap of his fingers. Haha Later Get another one. Hope that van started.

Thanks Sam, this was not the same homestead, but it is probably not further away than maybe 50 miles, the van started without any issues, I keep a little bit of safety heat going, just above freezing and that seems to be working fine:-)

So beautiful. I did this in Minnesota as a young person on the border with Canada. I’ve become soft after too many years in Texas. I know the feeling of the brain wandering to hello elephant, and making a tent pad in the best first light area, or finding a spot with refuge from the wind. Sometimes even a 4Season bag doesn’t offer quite enough warmth, but your setup is amazing compared to mine decades ago.

I find that the most difficult thing in winter camping is to be immobile when its pretty cold . Even with warm clothes , a human body needs to moove to keep warm . I do the same type of winter camping than you except for one thing , I make a fire for a couple of hours before going to bed around 7 or 7h30 . Cutting wood keep's me warm and I sit near the fire for a while . But I camp in a boreal forest , which is not your case , most of the time you are in a alpine location . I admire you to be able to do your stuff without a fire , it's not easy . From a nordic man to another , thank you for this beautiful video !

So very beautiful out there in that frozen wilderness. I have a difficult time how a thin tent will keep a person from freezing to death in those temperatures. I guess it takes the right combination of equipment and gear. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I can use some of the gear to keep my old bones warm during the cold winter months.

  • @NorwegianXplorer

  • @Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism

The tent doesn't keep you warm. What keeps you warm is your body heat. You need to trap it by making sure you have the correct cloths, sleeping pad and sleeping bag rated for lower than you camp in. With this correct gear, it's no where near as hard as it looks........ but it's not easy either, just far more comfortable than you'd think. Once in your bag, you should pretty much feel just like your inside a house. If you don't, then your pad or bag needs upgrading.

This is, for me, until now, the most beautiful of your winter-videos. Branches bowing under the frozen snow, bushes that take strange forms... And the blue cloudless sky, the sunlight on the virgin snow create gorgeous sceneries. That blue hour : really magic.... We can "feel" the cold, "hear" the silence... Extraordinary winter-wonderland. Once more, you did it, Jarl ! You faced the extreme cold, but the compensation given to you by nature was sooooooo enormous beautiful ! Thanks for sharing it ! I was surprised to see your van instead of a car. Plenty of cargo carrying capacity. Stunningly beautiful snow scenes throughout. Definitely COLD temperatures. Perfect tent pitch, each & every time. The sweater you're wearing while pitching tent looks as warm as it is beautiful. Get that Western Mountaineering Puma sleeping bag (GWS Outer) out of its stuff sack so it can fluff up then go about other setup routines. On a cold light there isn't a sleeping bag on the planet I rather have than your Puma. A sign of your experience is when you inflate your air mattress with the pump sack instead of inflating it with air from your lungs. Those ski boots are much different from the bindings & lace 'em up boots I wore way back when. I especially like the lack of dialog & your photography. What little dialog there is, is pertinent, especially when you mentioned what the temperatures are. Starts getting dark around 3:30 in the afternoon; that is something I'd have a hard time getting use to in real life. Please consider omitting the coffee making scene, I've seen it in most every video you've ever made. Delighted to see a change to hot chocolate today & with good reason. I'd likely want to be munching on chunks of pre-cooked bacon throughout the day/night. I'd even consider "bacon" as dessert. Those Freeze Dried meals you so often eat, Real Turmat, ought to consider making you one of their Official GoodWill Ambassadors. Loved your very favorable comment about "this is Sweden at it's Finest". closing comment. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Only another three to four months of winter to go for you; there’s about six weeks left here, if that! 🤣🤣 I actually like the snow but we don’t usually get much in the southern half of the UK. It’s usually just wind and rain. When it does snow I like the effect of the moonlight on the snow. When that happens it doesn’t get truly dark, as there is a beautiful, warm, ethereal glow cast across the landscape.

If your pad is rated to 6 R ASTM (or higher), you could ditch that extra lb worth of foam (another 2R) pad at those temps. Sometime when you're out there, go ahead and remove it out from under your pad for a test, and you'll realize it's not doing anything and you'll still feel the same warmth because your air pad is rated for even colder than you're at. Had you the actual need for it (if you had a 3 season pad) you would have quickly learned it would have to go on top of the air pad, because the air in the pad would be still be cold, even with the foam under it. I see a LOT of winter campers doing this, because they just copy other winter campers. I know, some claim "well in case I have a leak, I have a backup" but let's be real, if you only had 2 R ASTM you couldn't continue to lay there on it without freezing anyway. You'd have to get up, stay up tending to a fire all night or night hike back out. So they're not a real "backup" plan either. I just welcome you to test just your pad without it (if it is a 4 season 6R+ rated pad that is.) I think you'll see you're needlessly carrying an extra pound of weight for no real advantage.

  • @NorwegianXplorer

You'll quickly realize Jarl uses his foam pad in the most advantageous/useful ways. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

@@azclaimjumper The thing about winter camping is, everything is so much heavier. It was just a suggestion to help him reduce (needless) weight (if he uses a pad already matched for winter temps) as for sitting, they make the same material in small sections and sell them as sit pads. Once your tent is open, that can be used to store all your stuff. If you found yourself in need of storing gear on the snow often, one could simply use a small and lightweight tarp instead, for that for just a couple ounces. I wasn't telling he CAN'T carry it. I was inviting him to try without it, to see if he might enjoy the lighter load, while staying just as comfortable..........as in this video, he only shows using it under a pad (that looks to be a good, solid winter rated pad, where it's not doing anything.) Hey, I'm not judging, I have to carry a car camping, thermorest mondoking (the og version is 7 lbs!) because no one is offering a 6R+ ASTM pad that's at least 30" wide yet for us extra large men. So I know the pain of carrying too much in the winter. It's an invite to try new things. It wasn't a command.
