-20°C Winter Camping under a Full Moon. Solo Snow Backpacking in the Mountains. (Cold, No Hot Tent)
Winter Camping - Cozy cold tent camping in winter, without a fire. Using my Hilleberg Nallo 3 & Hyperlite Mountaingear Southwest 4400 backpack, I wanted to go out backpacking & camping high up in the mountains of the North. The forecast said no wind, dead calm with minus -20°c or -4°F. I choose skis for this mountain trip. It was wild and beautiful as I found a spot in the open to pitch my tent under the full moon. I brought coffee & food and found some true peace with wonderful views of the moon and mountains. No hot tent in my videos.
Full gear list at the end of the video.

My youtube channel focus on outdoor wilderness adventures and exploration, backpacking, hiking, canyoneering, skiing, climbing and mountaineering. Nights spent in a tent, alone or with friends. From the snow covered mountains and misty fjords of the North, to the remote plateaus of Yellowstone and the debts of the red canyons of Utah to the summit of Mt Whitney and the heart of Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park. The (full) moon : a wonderful and friendly-looking peace-giving companion.... I too love the moon shining into my bedroom at night.... If one couldn't possibly find rest in such a beautiful peaceful scenery of snow and ice, totally virgin, immaculated, ... where else could one find it.... Poetic images of stalagmites, of drawings in the snow caused by the wind, under a blue sky.... You enjoyed it, Jarl, and so did I.....

This video made me feel like id rather be camping in a blizzard? At least then I could escape the wind and be warmer in the tent. Beautiful very beautiful, these freezing nights with a full moon looks amazing. It`s incredible how you can withstand -20 temperatures all night, I know what -20 or more temperatures look like very well and a person who has no experience with this temperature and goes for a camping to the mountains without the correct equipment can freeze easily very easily. When you look at the full moon at night you feel something special, you just can`t put it into words. So thanks for another nice winter trip🏔

As you were removing your ski boots, I remembered a saying; "while You're out racing, I'm still lacing". I never got away from boots that needed to be laced B4 putting on my skis. All over the world are man-made piles of rocks out in the boonies; I always wonder who? You always seem to remember to film the sunset & sunrise. What was the temperature in the morning when you first woke up? Finally, Western Nevada, Central California & the high Sierras has been blessed with a lot of snow/water that has buried some remote small towns in California. Lake Tahoe is back up to 6,225' which is a FULL pool. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
@NorwegianXplorer
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have seen the pictures from Tahoe, looks insane. The rock stacking is a dissease in Europe, they are going up everywhere, humans think they have to leave a mark on everything. Leave no trace has gotten more attention in the US and people over where you are have become more aware of the need to keep nature protected and untouched, but here in Norway in Europe the ignorance is tragic. I also have lace up boots for my cross country skis, but the backcountry skis I am using here are more stable when I carry a heavy load, but for long walks the cross country skis would be faster.

Jarl, I am trying to figure out what booties those are? Very nice. Several of your pieces are exactly what I use for winter (Nallo, Puma, pads, and a lot of the small stuff). It's interesting to see someone else do it and compare. I am pretty close to the same technique.
@NorwegianXplorer
Жыл бұрын
Hey Jarl with a C, the booties are WM expedition down booties covered by Helsport Foot Bags.
I really enjoy your videos, nicely done and informative. After 15 years of living in Oslo, you've inspired this Californian to try camping in Nordmarka in the winter. I have most of the gear but have 2 0C sleeping bags, one down, one manmade filling. Thinking of using both, one inside the other but keep outer synthetic bag unzipped so as to not compress the loft in the down bag. Do you think this is a terrible idea if the temps get down to say -10c? Mange takk hvis du svarer på så dumt spørsmål.
@NorwegianXplorer
10 ай бұрын
Thank you, I have never tried it myself but I know people recommend using two bags, so maybe try it close to somewhere you can bail in case it gets too cold? Synthetic bag on the outside
Have you tried sleeping without all those cloths in your bag? I ask because if you've never tried it, you might find it surprising on how much warmer you might feel. I sleep with just a thin base layer in my bags (and make sure the bags are properly en rated for the temps im in of course) and what I found was, that by allowing my body heat, particularly from my upper body, escape from cloths and into the bag, is that it warms the whole bag up and this in turn, heats my legs and feet up and I turn the whole bag into a 80-90F heat sack! haha. I have tried it that way too and what I found was, my butt, legs and feet could never warm up. Even my upper body felt much cooler. I know it seems like this doesn't make sense, but if you've never tried it, I welcome you to try laying there with just a base layer for a couple hours while watching a movie or reading and just give it a go. I think you'll be surprised by the results.............. Also I might add, if you still feel cool or cold, rather than resorting back to the bulk wool layers, you might look into adding a down quilt to layer over your bag instead. I think you'd find it much, much warmer and far more comfortable. These are just friendly suggestions.
@NorwegianXplorer
Жыл бұрын
Yes, one layer of wool is better to sleep in than what I was wearing, but I could not be bothered to get re-dressed if I had to get out a film again. I know all the tricks, I just choose to do things different from time to time for various reasons, and also so that you can have fun with calling me out on it...

I'll give it a try , even in my -40 sleeping bag I feel some cold spot during the night sometimes ( usually around 3 or 4 in the morning ) . Usually I sleep with only with my base layer plus a small polyester jacket ( in case I get out for a pee) and I keep a small puffy jacket inside wich I use if needed to cover myself like a quilt, or else it stay's on my side.

Flott video!
@NorwegianXplorer
11 ай бұрын
