Wonderful video!!! I have volunteered at a donkey sanctuary. These animals are SO unique and SO special, they are over-worked and abused worldwide, which is very sad. But, what a beautiful creature they are! I am so happy that this video captures this about them, and I encourage people to learn about these animals, and to experience their beauty!!!

Also, the idea of just walking beside a donkey, sharing time as you would explore with your dog, is a complete awakening for me. Thank you so much for making some much needed changes to my thinking. A family friend had a donkey farm when I was growing up. She had a donkey 'stallion' who led the herd, his name was Lightning and he was notoriously mean to strangers. Oddly enough, he always loved me whenever my family visited the farm (the bag of carrots probably helped). As a small child, I would always run off to play with Lightening, and whenever it was time to leave I would hide between his legs because Lightening would chase away my parents and other adults who were trying to convince me to go home lol. As an equestrian, I have to say that donkeys are far more loving and intelligent that horses. They feel emotions very deeply. People underestimate how wonderful these creatures are.

The donkeys I had as a kid weren't "stubborn" or anything. They were sweet. Affectionate and loved to play. But mostly they liked to give kisses, be close to you and the younger one enjoyed playing hide and seek! They were more like puppies or dogs. We actually didn't really ride them after awhile and spent more time simply walking around our 20 acres and the followed us and seemed to really enjoy it. They were so great. Miss them. Cookie and Jenny were there names.

**smiles** Long ears totally ROCK! Amongst my nine equine companions is a beloved miniature molly mule named Maggie (Mae) who totally enchants me. She just turned 15 this past November and is the youngest member of the herd. Mules can be even more challenging and independent than donkeys due to their intelligence. It's entertaining and fascinating to watch how she interacts with others, once she trusts someone she's all over them looking for affection and attention... ~"My treasures do not ching together or glitter. They make great companion animals and pets, they are really intelligent and affectionate. Unfortunately, they are some of the most abused farm animals, and since they can take tremendous hardship and pack weight, they are overworked. In many places such as China, they are brutalized and killed brutally for their pelts.

Donkeys are surprisingly intelligent and have EXCELLENT memory and sense of location. In older times, donkeys were used to plot roads because they could tell which path was safest beneath their hooves, and thus could be turned into a road. They CAN be stubborn because they like the things they know are safe. If a donkey gets used to a specific route, they will stick to it until it becomes unsafe to them. That said, what a donkey considers safe and what someone riding said donkey might consider safe can be two VERY different things. I've seen them climb pretty much vertical hills and stand on the precipice of deep ravines, but they are intelligent and sensitive enough to know they're safe. They are also surprisingly tough and strong. They can work HARD and carry really heavy loads and, while I don't support overworking (no one should overwork), they make for excellent animal help in fields. In my grandparents' old stone olive press, a single donkey could turn the stone the entire work day (though they did have two donkeys so they could take breaks). This also means that if you, somehow, manage to anger or push a donkey to aggressive behavior, it can and will hurt you. They are intelligent and compassionate, but, as with most animals, they react to threats and pain.

Donkeys can safely carry up to 50kgs without sustaining damage. So unless you are a child or a petite woman please do not ride a donkey.

They are smarter than horses - they learn tasks quicker. The are used as "guard donkeys" in America to protect sheep, goats, cows, from predators.

Thanks Valia! This was an out of the ordinary video that we have come to expect from you! I found it most informative and interesting! I wonder, would you visit Takis island where he has many dogs/cats/etc???? Takis is overworked with all his animals. I may be out of left field here. I don't know the geography of Greece-so ????? Happy Sunday Valia! Our savior from Greece!!! One special Lady is how I think of you Valia! Cheers from Quebec, Canada!

They are such lovely animals and it's such ashame the treatment that they have had over the years. Even here in England, there are sanctuaries set up for donkies that were worked to the bone at sea side resorts for stupid kids to ride around. They have back issues and their feet are sore and painful. These are sweet, gentle and loving animals and I wish people would stop using them as slaves and treating them like they are stupid. It's so sad to me.
