Surprising emotions I felt buying a French Chateau - The Chateau Chronicles - Ep #13

This week’s vlog is a bit rambly as I reflect on the holidays and then show you a bit of my artistic process. Not exactly Chateau renovation, so feel free to skip it if you’re just trying to feed your chateau renovation addiction. I get it!

I lost my father when I was five, my sister was nine and my brother was 13. My mother was 36 at the time, spoke almost no English, and was left with a mortgage. In retrospect, we lost a lot of our mother then, too. I have a lot of respect for you having worked through those times and doing your best for your children. I think you can call it a chateau because it is that to you. A woman’s home is her castle, especially after all she’s been through.

I do enjoy your rambling. I feel like I am listening to a good friend tell me about what is going on with her. Sending a hug❤️. I am glad you included the tutorial on art. I am retired and have always wanted to try painting and drawing. I am a gardener and look forward to your plans for the outside of your lovely château. I also like the idea about keeping the hallways white while adding color to some bedrooms. I grew up in an 18th century farmhouse. The bedrooms had the original colors and we always referred to each one by their color. The green room, the pink room, etc

Your art is lovely and so is your dads chateau drawing! I can’t imagine the depth of pain you have endured over the years. It’s always good to feel it and then release it. It’s the healthy way to heal. Even though it’s not a fun process. You seemed to be balanced with it all. Much love to you and I’m excited to see you back in France. May the days ahead bring you many blessings and divine flow. 🙏

This was my third Christmas as a widow and since I spend Thanksgiving with my son, daughter-in-law and darling granddaughter, I spend Christmas by myself. I don’t have a hard time which surprised me…..probably because I order gifts for myself from Amazon and have plenty of new books to peruse and yarn to knit and crochet. I do not allow myself to linger on what was because that leads to depression for me. Plus we are so lucky to live in the age of FaceTime which is wonderful. I loved watching your latest painting process and since I have lots of supplies, I’m going to give it a try. The first thing that came to mind was to use fabric paints free form on an old sweatshirt. Best wishes to you and the sooner you go to France, the happier you will be, especially with flowers blooming in another month or two. 🌺🌸🌹🪷🍀

I’m coming!!! Found your YT channel yesterday and have been binging. I’m 52 and lost my 49yo husband this summer from a totally unexpected cancer diagnosis. My 14yo daughter and I just had a deeply emotional holiday season and are daily trying to navigate life. You are so inspirational whether you intend to be or not. The views, the peacefulness, the food, the charm, all of it is wonderful. I’ll continue to follow along and hope to see it someday in person. Best wishes!

Grief brain - anyone who has suffered tremendous loss might be inclined to have a hard time at the holidays. For me, I lost a son 7 years ago. There is always a sad pallor over the significant days. He was a twin, so his twin’s birthday is always a challenge. Peace to all of us who have chronic grief.

@@karigraham8168 I am so sorry Kari. I really didn’t know there was a name for the phenomena but I’m glad there is - grief brain seems to sum it up. I, like many, can only guess at your pain but many of us can deeply relate to it in some way. I think holiday grief is an under studied subject. There are millions who quietly fight off a deep sadness that befalls us during this time. Holiday recovery feels slow and lonely, as it is an inside job. Much respect and compassion to you and yes, like you said, peace to all who know this.

“We went to a Viking disco party.”…. As one does! 🙂 My heart goes out to you. I appreciate your authenticity about the Holidays as a widow. Made me think of the quote by Anne Lamott: “You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly-that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.” ― Anne Lamott

It was beautiful 🥰🥰🥰 so very talented❤❤❤ I love painting with mostly with oils but I have to say I'm loving watercolours. ❤❤❤❤❤ You are allowed to have those moments of sadness when you've lost a loved one no matter the years that have passed. My late father once told me never try to bury that feeling and just to let it be, if it brings tears then it brings tears. He said to me to think of that moment as you and your lost love reconnecting again through a moment in time that was once shared when they were here in person. ❤❤❤ I thought I'd share that thought with you ❤❤❤ Another great vlog and I love your idea of going back to fance!!! And going back to the USA when its time for the meeting ❤❤🎉🎊 much hugs to you, belated merry Christmas and happy new year!!! 🥳🎊🎉

Don't be so hard on yourself! You have labelled yourself as a widowed, single mom. You are so much more. I think the key to coping with this difficult time of the year, is to make it different. You cannot recreate the past. Next Christmas will be so different!! You'll be in situ in your Château!!!! Wonderful. Stay strong and keep rambling! See, now I'm rambling!!!!! 😁

Grief is a strange thing really. We lost my dad almost 5 years ago and his birthday is right around Thanksgiving. Every year I feel like we are forgetting something and realizing we aren’t celebrating his birthday. Then my sorrow clothes lines me every time. I can’t even imagine what you and your family has gone through.

Glad to see your sweet face. Your Christmas tree looks lovely. That New Years Eve party looks like a lot of fun. I don't know if you have given a tour of your firehouse, but I'd love to see one. If you're up for that and need an idea for a video. I like the idea of doing both white and traditional colors in the château. Why not? And I really really enjoyed the art class. That was fun and those turned out really cool. I homeschool my youngest son and we love doing art projects. I think this would be a fun way to make some unique pieces. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas and a very merry new year to you and your family.

I lost my father 3 weeks before Christmas 12 years ago and I struggled with celebrating so much that year but I kept moving for the sake of my children. Then 3 years after that my ex-husband took his own life sometime over the holidays. He was suffering from severe mental illness and was estranged from family and friends so he wasn't discovered until the 2nd week of January. Christmas is a painful time for my family. We keep celebrations quiet and small. I try and talk about their dad with my kids so that they feel like they can know him better. I tell funny stories and talk about things he liked and disliked. It helps keep them connected. I am loving your videos. I would never have the courage to do what your doing, but I did move 1000 miles away from my home in the Midwest to make a new life for myself. Best wishes for the new year!
