After practicing on flat surfaces for a few months I started practicing in skate parks recently and found out that I need more technique instructions. Keep on with these these amazing videos

Hey Kale - I surf and skimboard goofy and snowboard, skate, and wakeboard regular. Is this normal? When I try to get up regular when surfing it is horrible as I can’t get up with my right foot going first. I feel like for surfing the front foot should be what you naturally move first. When I try the other sport goofy I also find myself struggling. I’m at a loss as I’m wondering if the stance is what is holding me back from becoming a great surfer.

What you do doesn't actually look - and sound (screeeetch!) - like the tail slide I was taught, but more like a tack with heavy rotation. I was taught to put all the weight in the front foot, so kicking the back foot would make the unweighted tail slide out and make that typical abrasive sound. You are actually lifting and turning your front leg, with the back foot carrying all the weight and being your pivot. Can you explain the difference and how it translates to surfing? Thanks!

That so called steep barreling bowl is around the same height and radius as the waves you were doing the re-entry on and the slopes are like the shoulder which won’t work in the water as there is no wave energy out there. So how does that work?

Do you think you could make a video on how to pop up quick and at the top of the wave rather than drifting down the face please? I could really use that 😂

Hi Kale, after watching your surf skate videos, I’m really keen on starting surf skating to practice on land. I don’t have a surf skate yet, but just started to have a go on a regular skateboard (I don’t know how to skate so just starting for the first time). Weird thing is I feel more comfortable on the skateboard Goofy footed, but I naturally surf Regular footed. Do you reckon I should try to force myself to skate Regular footed to better align with Surf Skate training for my Regular Footed surfing?

Very good question Quan. We have had many, many customers over the years with this question. Its all about your popup to start with. When you lie flat on the ground like you are paddling a surfboard, can you pop goofy and natural stance the same? Surfing and skating different stances normally develops from a very early age. We have some solutions you can try but let us know how you go with a goofy popup v's natural popup.

@@QuanNguyen-wx9ls it's best to keep to natural stance. It's harder to change your pop up than your stance on a SmoothStar. Essentially it's all about retraining your brain. Your body has the ability to ride natural but the brain doesn't know how to coordinate it. With all the riders that have this issue it's initially very awkward to change your stance on the board back from goofy to natural. There are some simple left/right - heal/toe movements we would recommend to start. Just make small progression each time. It will feel really weird but you will be absolutely amazed on how quick you can transition over. If you have about 1 hour a day of riding, you should be riding fluently in less than 2 weeks. In that process don't ride a normal skateboard. Of all the customers we've worked with, this has worked and they haven't looked back. Interestingly they now can't ride the way they use to... they trained their brain. If you email our customer support, we can give you the full breakdown.

Am I the only one who feels SurfSkates are actually counter-productive? The narrower fixed stance, the extreme ease of doing 'advanced' tricks like revs and how loose they are actually end up throwing me off when surfing for real. I'm torn because I love the repetition side of things but I'm actually afraid I'll end up engraining 'unrealistic' habits 😨

Surfskating has actually been incredibly helpful to my surfing. Living in the Netherlands we barely get any good waves, so being able to practice these movements regardless of conditions is great. I was amazed at how much the movements transfer over to the ocean! Regarding the stance: If you think it is too narrow (I couldn't make out from your comment whether you actually ever rode a surfskate or not not), then you need a longer surfskate.
