3 Steps For More Fluid Surfing (featuring Filipe Toledo) | The Surfer's Roadmap

One of the hallmarks of advanced surfing is the ability to achieve fluidity and flow. But although fluidity or flow can’t really be measured it can definitely be achieved using some simple techniques - let me show you.

Any tips on weighting vs unweighting the board and how that is coordinated with the back foot extension?

Hi kale, I want to get good at surfing, I live in Sydney but not too close to the beach. Ive been surfing for a few years but without going consistently its hard for me to improve. Do you have any advice?

Anyone tried the sharpeye SYNERGY model ? if so would you say its fairly similar to the inferno 72.

It has a continuous rocker. This makes you surf on the rail more - lots of body coil off the bottom turn and drawing off rail. It also wants to use the rail curve during carves (the arch cont from the rocker). It does better in good waves or waves that you have a lot of speed on. The Inferno 72 is good off the tail and for weaker waves. You don't need to surf it on rail as much. The 72 gets a little squirrely when there's roundness to wave or too much speed, but it is amazing in anything else. The SYNERGY is less forgiving but amazing rail surfing. The 72 is more forgiving and for daily stuff and surfing off tail with lots squirt off bottom in weak waves. I hope that's helpful.

@@peters219 cheers mate appreciate the reply. I've been riding the 72 for the last few years and feel like its a great daily driver was wondering about the synergy board since my 72 is on it way out now. looking for a replacement sometime this year judging by the info on the sharp eye website looked fairly similar maybe just needs a slightly better wave to get going as you mentioned so ill probably give it a shot cheers.

Get a skateboard and trim around. DONT PUT FEET ON GROUND but tick-tack and pump to get and maintain speed. This trains you to do the trim motions needed. All the levering off back foot from toe to heel and generating momentum and controlling it with weighting and body movement translates directly to surfing. Do this around a tennis court or similar smooth ground. You don't need a "surf skate" type board, its not carving just the ticktack and pump back and forth. If you choose not to do this, it may take you a few years to figure it out or you may never actually be smooth at it. A skateboard will accelerate this and you can trim within weeks/months. Every surfer/grom who's done this knows. You choose your path. All the wave face approach and management described by Kale is contingent on the trim control levering heel/toe weighting accessible via skateboard ticktack/pump.

Surfing a bigger board for sure helped me. It does force you to ‘slow down,’ and you learn how to dig the rail properly.

He’s able to surf those low-volume boards because if his low body weight and ability. The average surfer couldn’t get away with a 23 or 24L board 😂
