Surf Fishing Del Mar Beach: Croaker and Corbina in the winter

Surf Fishing Del Mar beach. In the central section of San Diego’s shoreline, we have Del Mar beach. For a little more info on the terrain, check out my web page on San Diego beaches:
surffishingsocalsd.com/best-s...
This video was recorded in early March so mussel meat was the bait of choice. Come summertime it will be more productive and sand crabs will be readily available for bait.
Gear and Tackle I use:
surffishingsocalsd.com/nick-h...
The fish in this video are Spotfin croaker and Corbina.

The title alone made me sub, I grew up all my life surf fishing So.Cal. and miss it huge. Yellow fin and spot find croaker, corbina and barred perch. Then the 4ft grey sand sharks that are amazingly out of this world eating. 5 1/2 ft leaperd sand shark at seal Beach on a live grunion. She was amazing, catch and release, were talking back in the 70's. Memories. I look forward to your stories and videos. Douhenny State beach i met Malcolm Forbes while catching endless 40 pound cow nose bat rays. Im in utah now But have 2 surf poles stationed at my moms in Lakewood, ca. Be safe and catch a few for me, Dan

Oh man absolutely! I think I’d lean toward a 24” Spotfin than a 24” Corbina all day. But cannot complain about either!

Do you reel in sand crabs or do you just leave them there? Also how long is the leader most of the time for a Carolina rig?

Aye bro, what kind of bait do you use? And where could I find it, I live in the area, but only have ever had one successful catch in these waters, and I would like to have better luck...

Sand crabs right now are hot. Read this: surffishingsocalsd.com/sand-crabs-are-back/ In the wintertime, I use mussel meat (cooked and frozen) from local seafood markets.

The mussel meat is available at most Asian markets. Mine are usually packaged in New Zealand green mussel packages. Here’s a link that illustrated both my sharking and light tackle setups(I’d recommend reading the whole thing): surffishingsocalsd.com/nick-heids-surf-fishing-set-ups/ As for the yellowtail, it was in SD, exact beach just isn’t relevant. I don’t wanna give any false hope or beach crowding for no apparant reason... it was sick but it was a fluke😂

With a valid CA fishing license Most public jetties and piers you can hand harvest the different types mussels from the rocks, per day bag and possession limit is 10lbs (in shell) per person wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Fishing-Map/Southern#mussels If you go during a low tide go jetties with safe access to the lower rocks, you can easily harvest a whole bunch of mussel very quickly But buying at them at the store is wayy quicker and less timing of the tides involved. But anywhere you see them if you can snag one you’re legally allowed with a fishing license.
