    I know Adrossan. My mum was born in Port Glasgow and my dad was born in Johnstone so I visited that area often to see my grandparents (though sadly they are now all dead). I still have happy memories of taking the train to Largs and sailing across to Millport on the CalMac ferry for a cycle around the island. Hopefully PS Waverley will come to the Thames again this year. We haven't had it for a while due to Covid etc. but hopefully it will come in September / October.

    There is a large bend to the right in the river that the boat has to negotiate as it comes into view so I assume that it is just easier to continue the right turn as the momentum of the boat is going in that direction anyway.

    Why did they moor her out in the river?

  • @ThamesShips

    @ThamesShips

    Жыл бұрын

    Many of the larger speryachts that come to London moor there. She has to be moored far enough out from the side so that the water is deep enough for her draught. Although it looks as if she is moored out in the river from this side angle, from behind, she is not moored too far out and there is still plenty of room for the other vessel to sail passed.

    When a vessel is sailing in a country other than that in which it is registered, it usually flies the flag of that country as a courtesy (thus it is called a courtesy flag). Since it is sailing within the UK, it is flying the Union flag as a courtesy. If it were to sail over to France, it would then fly the French flag, etc.

    Nice reverse park. I’d pass the captain on that one, give them their licence. Not sure I am a fan of this yacht. Nose too long, upper decks too short. According to the Port of London Authority handbook, "London Cruise and Yacht (a partnership between MBNA Thames Clippers and the Port of Tilbury) hold the contract with the Port of London Authority to manage the London cruise moorings at George Stairs Tier." I assume the docking fees are therefore paid to "London Cruise and Yacht".

    Actually a large yacht is a very good way of putting money back into society. From the moment the owner signs the contract it is spend, spend, spend…There is no chance of making money out of a yacht. When it is designed it supports 30 /50 people and their families. Once the build starts, 1,000’s are employed, not only at the ship yard, but also at the companies that make the engines, generators, pumps, lighting , interiors, the bridge and navigation equipment..the list goes on and on.. Once commissioned, crew, management, logistics and shoreside support earn their living from the boat. Every port the yacht stops at makes money from the yacht, not only mooring fees but also all the local businesses that supply food and consumables to the yacht.. As I say, the owner can’t make any money from his or her yacht..it’s simply spend, spend spend..and so the rich guys money works its way back down to ordinary working people who build, operate and supply these vessels.
