What is interesting to me about this is how Dean was mostly just telling Sam to stop the arguing, until John actually laid his hands on Sam at :55 which is when Dean suddenly said for both of them to stop, before physically putting himself between his brother and his angry father.

@@aviniciussouza100 John was grieving over the loss of his wife and the Lost for his children of their mother knowing what they have lost knowing what they have to go through because remember John lost his father when he was young so he knows what is loss of one parent does to kids and he thought it was his right as well as his kids rights to get revenge when one didn't fit that caused him to get mad at that one because he felt that he forgave one that hurt his wife by not agree with him that's what made John the unhealthy one

morticia - I disagree. Supernatural seems to be at it best when it does the epic biblical stuff, seasons 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, and 13. Even seasons 1 and 2 had Meg and Azazel(yellow eyes). Without it we're left with Leviathans, Mark of Cain, and and British Men of Letters.

What's scary about this is that it's not just Sam arguing with John with Dean in the middle, you can also see Lucifer arguing with God and Michael, being the obedient son, trying to stop them.

I was about to comment this. God made the Winchesters as a parallel to his own failures with his first sons. Heck, God was the one who “shut the door” on his son Lucifer and said “don’t come back” (until Apocalypse time).

This was actually my issue with the show, didactically speaking. This idea that he who is an independent thinker, a critical mind that stands up against what he see's as being fundamentally problematic, is "bad". This religious obedience that a believer must never question god, and as such he who does is a sinner, has really affected our social approach in terms of how we treat those who are not blind followers - those who question and think for themselves. Historically, those who question the status quo, many in pursuit of righteousness and fairness, were always condemned for questioning authority. In the same light, those that dare to question in modern society, are given the epithets of "difficult", "controversial", "the black sheep." The notion that blind obedience = good, is a plague that has destroyed society in copious ways, and it was a theme I did not enjoy in the show. The show could have used this trope opportunistically, to show how rebellious characters, with virtue and intelligence, are fundamental to change - to discuss the courage it takes to defy authority, whether it be, as is in this case, your emotionally abusive father (John), or your corrupt boss or establishment. It is not a sin to say no, nor to question, nor to be the purveyor of your own destiny. It takes strength, courage resilience and a critical mind. The reason we as humanity have evolved to modern society as we have, was because others before us questioned and defied the norms. In the same light, it was Sam's defiant character and desire to shape his own destiny that lead him to say no to both his father, and Lucifer. It was this spark that helped him save the world. He said *NO.* And this is why Sam for me, was the most complex and fascinating character, as well as the most righteous character of the show. Dean's blind faith was excruciating to watch. Never be the sheep guys. Dare to question when you see something wrong and please, if you havw toxic parents stand up to them. Be a Sam not a Dean.

1:15 is when John realized Dean wasn't picking his side over Sam's. I feel so sorry for Dean because he always had to play ref between Sam and John.

This is why Sam was the best character of the show, he questioned everything, he saw his father's abusive ways and was strong enough to face them. Dean simply sat there and took all the abuse that John threw his way. Sam was able to stand up and say no, to fight for something better. It is this same defiance, critical thinking and desire to fight for something better that led him to defeating Lucifer himself. Sam Winchester is a powerhouse. P.s He is also fine as hell

Tbf Dean and John didn't do what they did because they wanted to or something. They did it to help people and stop like the demons. Sam is right about a lot too ofc, but the moment supernatural shit affected his life with his gf he came running ready to be a hunter for good again. He did a lot of crazy stuff in that pursuit too.

This scene is one of the many excellent examples of how good the Supernatural writers are; they make the dynamics between the characters so real! Not only that, they do it in such a way that you can relate to all of them and not just the one who's 'obviously been wronged'. So natural, so realistic--loooooooove it!

This is still one of my favorite scenes even today. The amazing dynamic is so interesting to watch.

I love this scene. Right before this Sam was trying to get Dean to admit that they don't always have to listen to their father. Sam demonstrates this with a huge confrontation and then Dean turns around and subtly does the same exact thing Sam was attempting to do by showing that they are their own men and can question their father when he is wrong. Dean stands up to John, tells him to back down, and in this moment at least he is the most mature one in this situation. We have dual character growth from both Sam and Dean just in different ways.

Back when Dean couldn't pick a side

The sad thing is that to John, this is the way to give them a normal life. Kill the demon, end the cycle, free the family. But at this point, by fighting for the future, he has wrecked his family, alienated his children and lost his way. I can't imagine the despair when he sees the whole destined plan and realizes how much of their lives they could have enjoyed together before the storm.

He knows that he can't give his children a normal life, not after what has happened. He does the next best thing, that is prepares them for the difficulties they will face ahead. In that field, he did marvellous. But over time he got so into being a commander that his father-side got overshadowed. Sam had Dean and was able to cope somewhat but Dean had to bear the brunt of the whole thing. THAT'S why I love that it is Dean who kills Azazel. John lost his wife but still had his sons, Sam lost his mother and had to put up with a commander instead of a father but still had Dean as a support, But Dean? He suffered the same as Sam except HE had no support. He even lost his own sense of self.

i don’t like ppl in my personal space.. as a rule so it could go 2 ways.. I think it’s cuz i wasn’t shown much affection as a child merely just tolerated.. So I got yelled at lots an when the shouting starts I black out! I either ignore it till it fades alway or I swing first instinctively. an throw my punches in bunches an I wont let up.. i’ve calmed down a lot now so I would either laugh it off or walk away now…but the old me was so mad..

I get chills because the way Sam yells about not being controlled anymore reminds me of when I left after my mom and I had a huge fight.

I hear ya. Though sometimes fighting with parents like that is like fighting with a wall, sometimes you just gotta leave and save the energy cause it's only gonna damage you emotionally.

There are so many nuances in this scene that make the scene so much more beautiful. 0:49 Sam was so incensed that he stopped his father's car to confront him, but once Dean put his foot down, Sam came to heel. He's arguing with his own father, but he listens to his brother without question. 1:03 You can feel the pain in Sam's voice. He never wanted to leave Dean that way and he feels his hand was forced by John. Especially after reconciling with Dean, you can tell Sam resents John for their separation.

I love how they exposed so much with one short confrontation: Sam left because he was sick of being under John's control and always having to follow orders. John wanted both his sons to help him keep hunting and couldn't understand why Sam would leave, only saw it as a betrayal. Dean wanted to be neutral/a mediator, but as soon as John looked like he might hurt Sam, he protected his brother. He hates that the cycle's repeating itself and now he's back to being in the middle of their dysfunction again. Well done.

Poor Dean....how many similar fights between Sam and John was he forced to break up when they were kids, do you think? This seems similar to the fights my older sister has with our dad all the time....and it's because they have the same personality, and when you have the same personality as someone, you are bound to clash.

in the end Dean physically can't stop them both, but he stop them anyway, because of Sam, sam love Dean, love and respect Dean more than John. John is not his paternal figure, is Dean , Dean is his paternal and maternal, he raised Sam not John or Mary so him is dad, mom, brother and friend for Sam, that's what Sam stop here, and that's what Sam always stop, even now (season 11) he treats Dean with care with love, respect him like a mother (like a parent) even if Dean sometimes is mean, he listen dean, that's what he stop here, that's what, if Dean had not been there, I don't know what could had happened between Sam and john.

One thing I love about the Series finale is that it brought Deans POV from moments like this back and reflected on his feelings. He says „I always looked up to you Sam, you never took any of Dads crap“ and it’s 100% in continuity with the show. We see the very fear of their father Dean talks about right here in this moment and how he indeed would have never DARED defying John the way Sam did. I always loved how brilliantly Jensen portrayed Deans feeling of powerlessness when it comes to Sam and Johns fights and his desperation to somehow deescalate the situation he would not be able to save if things were actually to go off. Dislike the series finale however you like, the callbacks are PERFECTION

JDM just elevated the show. Really hope they can get him back for the finale or something.

After all these years, you don't just have, "Sammy, I'm here, come on", you also have "Come one Dean, I'm here, not yet, not like this"

Foreshadowing on this show is crazy. I never put two and two together that way back in Season 1 they told us the destiny’s of Dean & Sam. Dean (Michael) who obeys his Dad (God) with everything he says..he does no questioning about it, loves him to death and always wanting to make him proud. Sam (Lucifer) always questioning his Dad (God) about everything, which he did heavily through this episode. Also the one whose combative and argumentative with his father. And as stated the door was closed on him and wanted to do his own thing.

This was my favorite argument ever I love how John grabs Sam it always makes me laugh.

When Dean is speaking seriously... You listen to him no matter who you are

For some reason I love how Dean also told off John: "That means you too." I don't know why.

This is one of my all-time favorite scenes. Because we got to see Sam other than calm and kind. Sam was the angry one in early seasons. I wish we could see that in later seasons too.

I don't blame Sam I mean his childhood was literally snatched he had no memories with his mother and his father was always away.

How did you get that from this scene? It was Sam that stood up to powerful authoritative figures. Dean took the shit for much longer.

That's why Dean doesn't let Sam driver the Impala anymore xD

@xoTROJANETTESxo Dean holds noone close to himself except for Sam, so when to his mind his only superious-being his father- orders him to protect Sam he does that and makes it his reason to live. You can see it in a lot of episodes, that he has no reason to live outside Sam, he considers himself usseless and unless he honors his fathers and does his will he does not justify his exsistence. Ofcourse he never realy says that, but you can figure it out eventually.

Actually he does say a lot that he feels worthless. And his only reason for living is Sam
