I like how the worst movies are mastered perfectly at like 8k with ever piece of grain lovingly poured over compared to major motion pictures. They are seemingly always problematic nowadays.

Good to see you've also pointed out some of the flaws of this set. Its surprising some of the other KZread channels who focus solely on new blu-ray and 4K releases failed to point out this sets issues with its grading and Atmos mixes. I gotta a sense they didn't bother to watch them all the way through or failed to do any research.

Absolutely!! I knew you’d see the errors right off the bat. Warner’s current releasing of catalog titles is really frustrating. New scans marred or ruined by lack of care and effort, poor encodes and errors, and corner cutting wherever possible. I still haven’t gotten over Warner’s Batman UHDs with their color and sound issues. Their handling of the Fleischer Superman cartoons was abominable and should be recalled. Equally frustrating are the channels who gloss over or completely ignore issues as you say. There are certainly times where I can’t believe certain releases receive nothing but raves from people who clearly didn’t watch them closely. Research seems a foreign concept to most reviewers unfortunately. I practically drive myself nuts with research.😂

Shame on Studio's for firing their veteran employee's who knew how these films should look and know how to correctly work with 16mm, 35mm and 65mm film.

Precisely the reason that Warners should lease out most of their major catalog titles to the boutique labels. I never saw their Blu Ray of Barry Lyndon, but the Criterion is staggering.

Criterion basically fixed the issues with Warner's master: compression and incorrect aspect ratio, better color representation and warner only having a 5.1 remix, plus added a whole second disc of extras. The recent BFI release and new 4K restoration of GET CARTER also distances itself so far from the 2014 Warner BD that you see just how crummy that WB disc was. And Warner even screwed up there by only having the inferior US dub!

Warner Bros was a studio that put out absolutely fantastic releases on LaserDisc, DVD, and for a long time on Blu-Ray too. But now they have lost their touch by cutting corners, making mistakes, and not fixing the problems after receiving so much backlash from the fans. I too have thought about it and I agree, Warner Archive should take over the home video releases for Warner Bros because Warner Archive actually puts time, effort, and money into creating a high quality product that fans will love. I am the same as you Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader, I have bought multiple home video releases of the same movies on different formats to get all the content like sound mixes, special features, and different transfers that are more faithful to the original release. It sucks that so many modern Blu-Ray, DVD, or 4K Disc releases lack those.

I second that idea. Warner Archive actually cares enough to put in the extra work, time and money into their releases.

It's ironic that Warner's boutique label Warner Archive has a much better track record for quality control than Warner's main video label at this point. WAC's encoding is even better than Criterion's in many cases. It's obvious that Warner they really doesn't care that much about their home video releases at this point. I had the laserdisc of the first film back in the day and it was indeed a revelation, not only for the sound, but it was a thrill in seeing it in widescreen at last.

The widescreen LDs of 1-3 still hold up today quite well in spite of I being definitely noisy in its video. The 2 and 3 letterbox LDs formed the basis of the original snapper case DVDs. Warner Archive doesn't just show up the studio label with every release, but I think every other major US label. Their encoding is the best in the business and in spite of not being able to make new extras except in rare cases they are IMO easily the best of all US labels.

Warner Home Video could learn alot from Warner Archive. It’s a blessing and a curse that they are separate departments at the same company. Warner should send the home video staff for training at Warner Archive.

The strange contradiction here is that pretty much the only people buying physical media are film enthusiasts but many releases have technical issues that will definitely trigger the film enthusiasts.

Thank you Spencer. All of us appreciate these cautionary tales because none of us have unlimited budgets.

One of the worst things they could have done is to not re-release all the 1080p Blu-rays. So we get the same discs with the wrong color grading, from the old Anthology boxset. Even the 4 Batman movies got new BDs back in 2019 when the UHDs were released.

Absolutely. Also by only including some of the Anthology BDs and not putting any legacy extras on the UHDs it means you lose out on some of the extras from the Anthology discs not included.

Not just extended/TV edits (like the Vudu extended cut for Super II RDC) or stuff like isolated tracks (which I have seen for movies 3-4 made by fans). I mean old stuff from the cast, interviews or even that 1979 Superhero Party - SNL short video (it's available on their channel), with Margot Kidder as Lois, and Bill Murray as Super/Clark... Universal always includes a few more things in every new BTTF release. Not Warner...

Speaking of classics, one thing I discovered recently is that Back to the Future movies seem to have had the original english tracks modified across all media releases. In the VHS from the 1st (stereo), Doc shouts: "Marty... YOU MADE IT!". In the DVD and subsequent releases, he says that calmly. Second change: in the 2nd movie, the scene "Eat lead, slackers!". In the VHS, different sound effects, which seem artificial in DVD and newer discs. Third: Last movie (1990): not happening with the 4:3 DVD or the 2010 Blu-ray (or audio commentaries / dubbings), only with the 2020 BD or UHD. At 18 minutes Doc fires a gun (twice), and Marty goes back to 1885. Sound effects are different. Fourth change: it looks like for the 2020 BD and UHD from part 2 (1989): the reused footage from the Delorean flying at the beginning: new sound effect (it's even in the KZread trailer). Fifth change: Sound effects are different if we compare the old 2010 BD and UHD, but some people say the old audio is thin while the UHD one is fuller and has a wider dynamic range. It would be interesting to check them, look for example into the scenes at the end, when Doc and Marty are trying to fix things during the storm. And 6th change: at the end of Part II, the delivery of the Western Union guy's line "we had a little bet going as to whether this Marty would actually be here" has been subtly altered. In the original, he says the line without pause. In the new audio, there's slight pause before "be here". The funny thing is that you can't find this been discussed anywhere, it's either not widely known or recognized by the producers...

Bro, great video. I feel this so much. I just can’t with the fact they removed the 5.1 from the first film. And it’s so annoying how they fixed the audio for the streaming animated show but not on disc. It’s really gonna have to turn into us making our own edits. I don’t think they’ve even addressed the Rocky set issues.

I seriously wonder if the KZreadrs just glowing over this release are somehow being compensated by Warners? I have not bought it, nor will I, but I'm dumbfounded by the almost zombie like praise by some people, after the thoughtful negative feedback from the likes of yourself and Oliver Harper.

I really don’t understand most of what passes for KZread reviews for physical media if honest. Especially for terribly flawed or screwy releases like this.

Yeah so now you have to seek out the 2018 4K for the 70mm audio, which I have already done even though I specifically held off on that one in anticipation of this box set down the line. Most unfortunate, considering 4K is the best/last physical media release many of these movies are likely to see for a long time P.S. the Superman movie special features have been a mess for a while. They have been spread over several releases. I now have 2 Blu Rays of the movie with completely different sets of special features

For extras you have to have the 2006 DVDs (if they're not rotted) for the standard def materials in their best encoded quality and the Anthology BDs for the few new HD extras. Whenever legacy older standard def extras get ported to BDs for some reason they always wind up looking worse than how they originally were on the DVDs. The Batman films suffered this too so the 2005 DVDs are a much better option for watching the extras even with upscaling to 4K.

I totally agree about studios trying to load as many of their eggs as possible into the streaming basket. Content is king, baby! High volume, low quality, who cares if it's bad because there's a new thing just on the horizon!

It's really weird when like 3 or 4 years ago we got a really beautiful scan of Blade Runner The Final Cut and now Warner has regressed so hard into this

They should’ve added the deleted scenes on 4K, but they only have them on blu rays.

Superman II - the donner cut freezes after an hour....and if you skip that section, it will freeze every now and then. It's my first 4k disc ever causing problems like that. The theatralic cut is flawless....

As a die hard Reeve Superman fan, it really saddens me how careless WB is with their library of films and history. I was looking forward to this release but will similarly not support such a shoddy effort. Hopefully there will be a recall or update in the future. Love your content and so glad I found it!

Years ago, I read that the reason for why the new 5.1 mix was created for Superman 1 when it was first released on DVD back in 2001 was because the master tapes of the original sound effects had deteriorated so badly they could not be restored, and that was why a new 5.1 mix was created with new sound effects.

I have not gone through all the 4K discs yet but I did check out Superman II first as it is my favorite and noticed that on the 4K at the beginning when Clark as he ditches Perry White and runs along the back alley to change to Superman the frame oddly shifts to the left side of the screen, now I've seen this movie countless times and I then checked my old DVD and the scene plays out just fine.

The macroblocking during the scene with lex's escape up in the hot air balloon looks atrocious i can't believe know one is talking about the macroblocking on the Donner Cut. Still annoyed the orange lines that pop up in the side of the frames alot. As well as the red/orange bleeding off of superman during the film

Not only that, they still need the "full version" of Superman II remastered in theatrical resolution. - Which includes all of those deleted scenes.

Wow! Thank you so much for the information on the 2018 UHD! I had no idea that the 5.1 track was the original theatrical audio and in fact, I was always frustrated that it would default to that mix instead of the Dolby Atmos. This new disc with the stereo mix, which I’ve never heard myself, clearly labels it as an original theatrical mix. I might have “upgraded” had I not known better. Thanks again!

WB sells It 1990 and its not the full movie. I don't why WB cut a 192 minute movie made for TV into a 187 minute cut. That's Despicable.

It really bothers me that Warner seems to care more about streaming than the disc formats. A few short years ago, I bought Body Heat on blu ray within 5 mins of the movie starting. I knew something was wrong. The movie was chucked on to BD disc without a care in the world. The picture had defects of every type you can imagine, and the sound quality was terrible. Phoned Warner's here in the UK, plus sent them an email with screenshots from the movie, showing scratches and other damage to the film. The response from Warner Bros was very disappointing, to say the least. I fear for the upcoming release of Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon on 4K UHD. As for Superman 2, 3, 4, and Superman Returns in 4K, NO WAY!!

I mean to be fair they never announced a new master of the original, very weird that they took the 5.1 from the original release off though.

It was indicated by some pre-release discussion at least indirectly that they would make a tweaked and slightly corrected version if only to remove the credit error, but instead they merely removed the 70mm mix and added back the Dolby Stereo. I'm surprised they touched the disc at all. It must've been for some foreign language dubs and subtitles and some idiot decided to remove the most important feature of the disc itself.

I’m also seeing Warners have severely screwed up the upcoming bluray release of the max fleischer cartoons. Although these were extras on the anthology blu ray set and I didn’t see any problems then, I’m guessing they were SD quality?

I'm beside myself they may have done even worse things to the Fleischers. I've been waiting and hoping for them to get an official new scan and BD since 2007. The DVD master WB made was for the 2006 Superman DVD set as extras only. They were rather compressed and had many audio errors in them. These same versions were ported to the Anthology BDs. Warner eventually made a 2009 standalone 2 disc DVD which fixed a few errors but not all and had better compression plus a new featurette.

As a German fan, Warner’s laziness comes through even more. Most of the time throughout the 2010s the German audio was kept merely at Dolby Digital even for relatively new films. The recently released Rocky Knockout Collection had too low of a pitch on all German tracks as a result of some botched PAL conversion years prior, an issue that existed even back when the Blu-Rays came out and it was never fixed. Thankfully Universal handles the distribution of Warner titles in Europe and they do care about addressing issues, so they said they’d start a replacement program. Although it remains to be seen if they fix another issue; In Rocky II certain scenes were cut in Europe, so when the uncut version came to Blu-ray, they just put the extra scenes in English with subtitles. In the 4K Version those subtitles are now entirely missing. Concerning Superman, no new audio mixes of the dubs exist. But Superman The Movie has some extremely awful noise reduction over the entire German audio, making it sound the flattest I’ve ever heard in any film.

Oh gosh yes, very few people in terms of studios pay attention to all the foreign dubs so they seem to run the gamut in terms of quality and maintaining older or original dubs in all kinds of different codecs.

Superman is one of my 3 favorite films- such a shame that the 4k set was so messy.

Superman IV’s score was composed by John Williams, conducted by Alexander Courage. Kindly remember for the future. The La-La Land Records release is remarkable.

John Williams contributed new themes for Nuclear Man, Lacy, and Jeremy, but Courage composed the music based off of John Williams' original Superman 1 score.

I prefer the 158 min extended blu ray of the 1st film. Shame about the remixed sound effects though. They colour corrected the costume to a nice deep blue rather than the light blue/teal on most editions. On the 4K the scenes when Superman enters Luthor's lair look too dark and colours washed out to me.

I really want that steelbook collection "if" Warner issues new discs. Superman should have the newer scan, Superman II needs a color regrade to fix those skintones, IV needs the complete OST and international scenes. Would be nice if the TV cuts of Superman I & II could be ported to UHD too alongside 4K scans of the deleted Bizzaro scene. Puzzling they took the time to fix Supes suit in many composite shots, but couldn't be arsed to do the same for the Batman cathedral finale.

At this point I'm glad Warner didn't go crazy on the Batmans because they would have had more problems than not having original audio and the color grading on both Burton films being screwy. A new release with proper QC should simply be original poster art for each case with a new BD of the 4K master for each film AND ensuring not just all theatrical audio tracks are present in their best quality, but also ensuring ALL the legacy extras are ported over.

On the Batman, 1989 4K release, I know some people don’t like it, but I admit from when I used to own the original version I kind of hated the cheap sound effects they used for gunfire and certain sounds, it was kind of disappointing for the time. I guess I kind of enjoyed the new Atmos mix. It was good to hear the update it a lot of the old 1960s gunfire sounds that they recycled because Tim Burton didn’t have a chance to finish most of the movie, at least that’s what I saw in a documentary. I was always wondering why the gunfire sounded so awful in the original cut, it wasn’t finished, and Warner Brothers rushed it out in theaters, yeah, as for the rest of the Batman movies. I didn’t really like Batman returns, and Batman forever was OK to a point, but I have heard the original mix of Batman, forever, and hearing the Atmos when it comes to sound effects, it doesn’t really sound like they change much at all, I’ve heard this movie many times, and it sounded about the same, other than it was now an Atmos, and it was a pretty active mix as well, I don’t know maybe just me, but yeah I do agree with him on the film transfer grading, Warner brother seriously needs to get their shit together

Pull audio from other mkv file to correct. Episode 413 - sex,lies and video tape - missing x-ray vision sound effect at 13 minute mark-ish. Second sound effect missing at 23 minute mark - destroying a missile. Superspeed sound effect missing at the 27:43 mark. Another superspeed throwing sound effect missing at 40:50. All the sound effects at the end are missing. 0406 - at the 3 minute mark, missing the super speed sound effects. - at 7:35 mark missing sound effects of the holigram. - at 16:42 mark, missing telescopic vision sound effect - at 23:09 no holographic sound effect - at 40:00, missing super speed sound and then at 40:26 missing heat vision sound 0415 - 8:40 - missing time warp sound effects 0415 - different song used at 26 min mark? 0419 - missing sound effects at the 39:30 mark, also could be earlier with heat vision at star labs.

I am glad I got the original Superman 4K and glad I spent £60 for the separate release for 2, 3 & 4. I hate the nasty way Warner handle these things.

Glad it worked out £10 a movie.

@@SkyTrapAlASMR I wound up buying the Batman 4K releases separately because here in the US, they did the opposite of what they’re doing with the Superman set. They had the Batman releases as individual only with slip covers for a rather long time then as soon as I got them, they announced a boxset version, and I was like doggone it.

I didn't know the Superman UHD wasn't coming with the 70mm mix anymore. Good tip to check the logo on disc itself. It would be a dream if the WAC team could work on some of the 4k releases. That or hire some better QC. I wish they'd hire you to do some of the research lol

I picked them all up individually in the UK and the only one I ended up returning was Superman IV. My copy of Superman The Movie included the 70mm 5.1 mix and Superman II was such a big improvement over my previous Blu-ray that I could live with a few errors here and there. The set in the US seems really overpriced and I'd definitely refund it for those issues, it's crazy that as a casual fan of Reeve's Superman movies and as a 4K UHD layman even I realised something wasn't right with Superman IV. WHV really dropped the ball with these releases.

There really hasn’t been a release that they haven’t goofed up of these films in some way. You’d have to go back to the 90s widescreen Laserdiscs of one through three and the original snapper case DVD set to have something without a bunch of errors. And due to the special edition, the theatrical cut of I was unavailable again until the next re-issue, which of course had issues.

Just wanted to ask; I've been looking to buy that Blu-ray set you have to your right behind you in this video. What version of the film is the 'expanded edition' that's on disc 2? I've been trying to work out how to get the theatrical, director's and TV cut on Blu-ray.

That’s the expanded or Special Edition cut of the original film which is from its own master and honestly still looks pretty good in spite of its age. If you get the Anthology BD set plus the Warner Archive release that will get you all three cuts of the original film plus the two versions of II in the Anthology set.

What if the poor QC is on purpose because a sale is a sale, and collectors will continue "the search" which will push an endless series of "flawed" releases. It's a con. It's a revenue stream.

I wish I had an easy answer but unfortunately if you want everything and every extra you will have to have more than one edition. Watching on a 4K TV you’ll probably want to start with the UHD set in spite of its errors but you’ll need to track down the 2018 UHD standalone copy of the first film for the best original audio mix. Then to get all of the old legacy extras you’d have to get the Blu-ray anthology set or some of the 2006 DVDs.

I got the version with the 70mm mix. the original pressing of Superman 1 that was a standalone release, yes it has messed up colors. I still need to get the TV cut of 1 on Blu-Ray. Why haven't they done Superman Returns or Supergirl for 4k? Or the extended versions of 1 and 2.

It’s such a mixed bag on these UHDs because the new 4K source work itself is good and would’ve been just fine and a proper improvement had they done their job correctly and accurately. The Superman Anthology BD set is good for what it is-my only major issues were the color timing introduced that teal effect Warner became fond of around this time on the new masters (I and II theatrical, III and IV) and that they didn’t have the 70mm mix of I or better sounding original audio for the sequels. The audio is good on the sequels but the LD of III sounds better and II could probably sound better too. At least the theatrical bd of I there does have the theatrical stereo which is good but terribly wimpy. But the color timing really bothers me so I kept the 2006 DVDs as well..but those sadly have rot issues.

You are absolutely right and your anger and frustration is justified. Major labels like Warner Bros., Disney and Paramount show time and again that they don't care about their product, they don't care about film curation or film as an art form that's worth investing in - be it time, effort or money. I will follow your advice: I won't buy this set until it's corrected or I can grab it ultra cheap on black friday. I don't expect Warner to admit their mistakes and/or correct them. Paramount has done a decent job on Star Trek even if they have DNR the optical effects of the original movies and the directors cut of TMP. and didn't include theatrical audio on any of the 10 motion pictures in 4K. What they did poorly reissued the old Indiana Jones blu rays in the 4K set.

For Superman 2 the ending where Superman fly's up to the camera where squashed in The Donner Cut 4K UHD not The Theatrical Cut 4K UHD

on quite a few copys of superman 2 theatrical there is freezing a pixaltion problems at the 56 minute mark on the disc ,that also effects part 3 and 4 ,it seems to be the layer break on the discs,plus i did contact wb uk and all i got was a sorry for a few discs to slipp through ,the reviewer eurphoria pictures on youtube had the same with his boxset from amazon and he is in ireland ,the problems are with the boxset and the single releases in the uk eurphoria pictures youtube comments also say they are having the same problems on panasonic players but mine is a sony 800m2 player so i got my refund from hmv,,im hoping for a disc replacement scheme from wb ,but wont hold my breath

It's based on the 2000 SE 5.1 remix with all the awful new sound effects unfortunately.

Leave it to Warner Bros to not get it even close to proper. A classic Superhero like Superman getting a proper mastering? Nope. And this is why I'm not looking forward to Superman: Legacy.

Well, I can agree with most of what he says. I do however own the original 2018 4K release and have heard the Atmos mix. It is a pretty act big mix for when the movie came out, I enjoyed it a lot, and also have heard the 5.1, maybe I’ll give it another listen I didn’t know it was the original 70 mm mix, but listening to it in 51.4 Atmos was pretty awesome, at least for me. on the DVD you guys must’ve got lucky or something, I own the original box that, and the only one that was in 5.1 back in the day was the first movie, special edition Superman, I don’t know they were all in stereo, disappointed me they sounded horrible on DVD But the original sounded pretty OK, but yeah, I don’t know I never owned this 5.1 release for 23 and four on DVD, didn’t know they made them, that’s why I was so hesitant, and never purchased the standard blue race back in the day, but I rather do enjoy the original release of the 4K 2018 version 18:30

Plot twist: you forgot to adjust the tracking

I have the 2021 UK 4K release of Superman, would this equate to the 2018 US 4K release of Superman in terms of audio? I count myself lucky that as a kid I did see Superman on original release.

If it has the lossy 5.1 70mm mix it is the same. The menus don't really indicate the track information but you'll have to look for one option to be a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track and that should be the 70mm mix. If it only has a 2.0 hdma then its the repress with a lossless version of the original Dolby stereo mix.

​@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader I just checked my 2021 UK/Ireland disc. Indeed its really hard to spot anything on the slip cover or case. It doesn't help with there being a DTS HD logo on there too. When you start the disc, the menu only has Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital 5.1 for the English tracks. This is reflected on my UB820 and also on my speaker system. I'm assuming that the 2021 UK/Ireland release is the 70mm audio version. No sign of DTS anywhere in that respect.

When I first saw a picture of the box set I was so excited, but upon looking into what was actually featured and then learning about all the quality control issues just lead to major disappointment. Especially leaving out Returns and supergirl

Thank you for this information. All I can say is wow! I'm sticking with my UK Bluray.

This is pretty unfortunate. I got the Steelbooks. Out of it, I've only seen part 3. And there are no issues. The transfer actually looks really good. As for audio, I have no grips...but some people won't like that many of the action scenes still sound a bit dated.

Well done pal, I really enjoyed your video I wish you have more views. Warner Bro's don't give a damn about preserving classic movies, nor do they care about Christopher Reeves legacy.

I was expecting Superman 4 to have the tornado scene and the Russian missile scene to be put back in along with unseen footages. Then I heard that it was going to be the same length as the crappy dvd release, i didn't bother wasting my money on the new blu ray boxset.

What I can't understand with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment in their 100th Anniversary year is they have done such a great job with the other 100th Anniversary titles on 4K UHD Blu-Ray Disc yet the 2 big box sets for Rocky and The Superman Christopher Reeve films for The Rocky Knockout Collection (1976-1987) and The Superman Five Film Collection (1978-1987) there is a lot of QC Quality Control issues with those 2 box set. It's beyond puzzling and odd to me the 2 biggest catalog titles and film franchises from Warner Bros. has been treated so badly on disc in the studios 100th anniversary year.

What would you suggest the best release of Superman to get? I currently have the 2000s DVD remaster of the superman collection, because of my age, when I first got this boxset I originally didn't look after them. I think I was 5 when I got them as a Christmas present. Due to my lack of care for the discs they now struggle to run when I try playing them. I have thought about getting A UHD player, but i'm not happy over buying one for just a small handful of films. I have also considers digital releases, but i know that it's impossible to physically download them, without using iTunes or amazons own media player.

I wish there was an easier answer because it really depends on what things you can live with in transfers such as color timing issues or not having original audio, etc. The most important UHD is the first pressing of the original film for having the original 70 mm mix, which is the best audio of the film no contest. But that’s tricky to find these days.. I would suggest just getting the Blu-ray anthology set to start with. That will get you all of the legacy extras and the whole series. If the color timing issues on some of the films on Blu-ray bothers you you can get the older masters on DVD for super cheap but then you have to try to find DVDs that don’t suffer rot issues so that complicates it. The anthology set sometimes goes on sale for cheap, but if you get the British import version with the same artwork, the discs are identical and it’s usually a fraction of the cost of the American set. I got the British anthology set a number of years ago for less than $20.

Also when you say the anthology set I assume you mean the set that has the superman returns S symbol on the front of the package? And I think that version also has the Richard Donner Cut instead of original Superman 2 and Superman returns as well. If so both of these will be an added bonus. As I have not properly seen the Richard donner cut in full and my copy of superman returns (the original DVD release) only has a resolution of 560p and has no bonus material. @@Jimbob_Offical yes it’s the Blu-ray anthology with the cover art. that’s basically a blue tinted version of the fortress of solitude with the shield logo. It includes Superman Returns plus both versions of Superman II so that will cover all your bases plus get you all of the old extras.

What I want to know is why are they not upgrading the extended and special editions of their movies? We’ve seen this with the first two Harry Potter movies, no 4K extended cut, we’ve seen it with I Am Legend, no 4K Extended Cut. This seem to be a common thing. Sony released the Raimi Spider-Man movies on 4K. Did we get a 4K of the superior Spider-Man 2.1? No. When Fox did the X-Men films, did they do a 4K UHD of the Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past? Nope. Terminator 2 just got a theatrical 4K UHD. Do we know why this is? I know with the Harry Potter extended cuts there were obvious color timing issues between new scenes. Like they didn’t even bother to time the sequences properly. So I wonder if it’s just a source thing. No 35mm master exists of the extended editions? I don’t know. But the Spider-Man 2.1 and now the Superman movie annoy me for not having extended cuts available in 4K/ HDR10

I bought the 4k steelbook set watched them all and spotted no problem at all? I also bought the rocky 4k boxset and spotted no problem with that at all???

It's a bit tougher than choosing just one or the other unfortunately with both series. The 4K masters themselves are big upgrades on each series technically speaking but neither was perfectly handled and each has flaws. The BDs of the Batman films do have some form of original audio thankfully and do not have the color timing issues of the 4K masters. however the Schumacher films don't look so good on the BDs. The Superman films have color timing issues on the BDs for most of the films and also have issues but none of the big ones of the 4K masters. So essentially if you're a die hard fan of either you really have to have both formats plus older releases for audio etc.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader so for myself, I’ve never gotten the Batman 4 movie set, and had the Superman ultimate dvd collection until that stopped working (all discs, really!) so I’m kinda torn on either 2010s blu rays or the newer 4k releases. Watched your reviews of both and was waiting to see if there would be a disc recall \ new printing of either or to fix issues but does not seem like that will happen. @@KnightOfNewColu no problem! I wish I had better news. My 2006 set bit the dust in terms of rot too. There won’t be any reissue sadly nor will there be a release of the Version 2 upgraded 4K master of the first film. I’d say pick up both the BDs and the UHDs on sale to cover your bases. Most important is finding that elusive first pressing of STM’s first UHD with the all important 70mm mix as lossy 5.1. The Batman films go on sale for very cheap sometimes. You can get the BDs in the 4 film favorites set for $10 or under usually and the UHD set has gone on sale for around $45-and less if you just get the individual releases.

Is the superman anthology blu-ray a good buy?

It’s not perfect but is without the errors of the UHDs. The new UHDs have good new work in their scans but only some of the films, pretty much just III are without issues or an error. The BDs are solid and have all the extras plus the anthology set itself is usually pretty cheap. My biggest issue on those was the audio could be better with more original options and the new transfers had teal color timing to them.

I totally agree with your review, I have some friends who got the new 4k bluray set, they paid a lot of money for it and it's not all that great. There's no new extras, the regular Bluray's in the set are the ones in the Anthology set that came out years ago. I bet ya in a few years they will re release this set on 4k bluray, when the new Superman Legacy movie comes out. One day if they release the TV cuts of Superman 2, 3 and the full cut of Superman 4, I would buy it (if they find them in that WB vault somewhere). Great review as always, sucks this expensive box set wasn't better, or cheaper. PS. I have also heard the Fleischer cartoons of Superman (remastered set on Bluray) from WB isn't all that great either.

I'd been on pins and needles waiting for the Flesichers. Now I can't wait to get my hands on it to see how bad it might be. The TV cuts would be through Warner Archive thankfully and they are working on trying to find the longer Superman IV if it exists or a good version of the II TV cut. I'm going to wait for the individual releases to go on sale and pick up 2-4 cheaply or used to not support this lack of care.

As for the Fleischer Cartoons, I personally haven't bought it yet, but from the reviews of those who are experts on Remasters Bluray/ 4k got the disc and say they aren't the greatest Remasters. Sounds like to much DNR or something?

@@jonmake9124 yeah so far, there’s been at least one advance review which says extreme DNR and heavy compression. And it’s from a reviewer that doesn’t usually get extremely technical so it must mean that it’s really bad.

I don't care with all the Issues, I'm just happy to have them all in Steelbook Form with the original art work. I have the Superman Ultimate DVD Collection and that's my go to...when watching these films. WB have so many Franchises to cover and re-release and clearly are not die hard fans to breakdown all the inaccuracies, issues and problems...but to me having them on Steelbook I'm very happy. I don't think WB will redo these anytime soon so for now it is what it is.

Admittedly this was years and years of built up Warner frustrations, issues with their poor treatment of the Superman and the Batman series which share many of the same issues and rollout disc eras and also my frustration with their continued piss poor handling of the DCAU.

I wish a redo was possible for Batman the animated series superman the animated series and batman beyond by Warner archive they deserved better. I think even justice league and justice league unlimited had bad blu rays.

I wish I could redo all the DCAU Blu-ray releases myself to be honest. Especially BTAS!! Justice league season one was a product of its time when the Blu-ray came out so it’s still watchable and to be honest overall is a better release then BTAS in spite of being a barebones digital master straight to early BD. JLU was thankfully Warner Archive.

And theyxsay its not never going ro be released but the Superman 2 Richard Donner cut thatcwas called the Vudu Cut at 122 min which they have all now replaced with the 116 min cut they supposedly were sent the wrong cut but since it was released and people did see it it should be available and why not we have different cuts for the original film i always watch 3 hr tv cut of Superman the Movie and ixenjoyed the 122 min Vudu cut we need to start to demand for the release of the film no matter if it was an accident Vudu had it for 3 yrs.I understand it wasnt Richard Donners prefered version its a version no matter what and in this day and age with inflation and how expensive everything wr at least deserve a little more for our money.All cuts should be made available even if it was an accident relelase it was released and millions have seen it lets go Warner Bros if u want to make ammends release a box set worthy of yourselves cmon now and make all versions seen no matter what the Vudu cut was released and was seen by all who rented or purchased it.Let's go WB lets getnevery version available and version not available in 1 box set maybe on the 50th anniversary in 2028!.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader even Forever and B&R have major colour issues despite already having a ton of colour. I actually prefer the Blu rays to all 4. I hear they are not perfect either but they look more accurate. They just don't benefit from deeper blacks. The first dvds set look too dim probably due to encoding of early dvds. I hear B&R was brightened for that set but it's not super noticeable as it doesn't go too far into moody lighting as Forever did.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader maybe even a video on Alien and Aliens or all 4 if you want a complete overview. Aliens is an abysmal 1080p remaster in terms of colour. Alien, I have no idea which is more correct. It seems the early dvds were dimmer but didn't have all that teal. Quadrilogy may be most accurate despite older encode. The Blu ray and 4k look pretty good for detail but colour is mixed. The Alien laserdisc boxset has been significantly brightened and looks washed out, you can see so much of the expensive sets but it kills the mood. I was curious about that master for a while because it looked so different. Almost has like a vintage 70's feel like Star Wars.

If you don't have the money for the steelbook collection then you may as well not even bother. Or just stick with the bluray collection.

Yeah, unfortunately this is a practice Warner and some others have been doing. Even Casablanca was done this way. I have no idea why. Especially since they’re coming from the same master source, and you would think for major catalog titles they would go for the greater nuance and better presentation quality of Dolby Vision. I don’t use digital downloads or stream anything really so I haven’t looked at them yet, but I think I’m going to try the download version of Casablanca just to see what the Dolby Vision there might do differently from the HDR 10 disc release.

How is not supporting them going to get them to listen truth be told it’s going to do nothing they ruined the Fletcher Superman cartoons as well so I have no faith in any of these studios anymore. :(

Yeah, it’s hard to figure out what to do because if you write in they ignore you, if you don’t buy it it doesn’t help and they still ignore you, if you talk about it they ignore you, etc.

Sadly no, and that is standard Warner practice. It’s extremely rare that they do a disc recall program and typically the only thing they will do when a problem is bad enough is quietly fix it for streaming versions only and not say anything.

So, does the new 2023K have the dolby atmos track? I have seen some videos on YT that say the new 2023 4K version has dolby atmos and not the 2.0 stereo mix you mentioned here? Should I get the 2018 4k or the 2023 4k?

They’re essentially the same exact disc with a messy transfer in terms of color timing and hdr handling. You want the 2018 for the all important 70mm mix. The 2023 disc replaces it with the Dolby stereo track for some unknown reason. Outside of that they are the same pretty much. I don’t bother with the Atmos because it is based on the remix but it is present on both.
