My Experience With DVD Disc Rot (Warner Bros.)
Ойын-сауық
Disc rot is something that is becoming a larger issue for movie collectors and film enthusiasts. I talk about my defective DVD's and which ones are ruined.
At a certain point in the video I said "buffering" when I meant to say "buffing".

It may also be the player. As the player gets older, it can't play certain dvds. You can test this by playing the same disk in your blu ray player. The blu ray can play them better.
Disc rot is an extremely rare thing, I have well over 1000 movies and only one stopped working. To be honest with you it looks like you don’t know how to handle your disc, buffing a movie should be a last resort if it doesn’t work, because once you scratch the first layer of a DVD you are potentially putting cracks in the protective coating that will allow air to get in and rot your disc overtime.

I have well over a thousand discs of dvds and blu rays and not one of them look like this. I've been collecting for over 20 years. I also think this guy is doing something critically wrong.

@@billwilliams4247 agreed every movies I own looks exactly the same day as I purchased them. I’ve taken such good care of them and over 20+ years I’ve been collecting movies only one didn’t work, It was a Blu-ray That somehow was probably manufactured incorrectly because it stopped working like six months after I purchased it. People claiming they’re having problems seriously need to learn how to handle their disc properly.
Clayton, THANKS For Trying to Inform ! From the sounds of it most of your exanples appear to be manufacturing defects. Problems encountered in the middle of the movie are from reading the middle tracks of the metal ring as the main feature is recorded on the disc from the inner circle to the edge. Nice of you the show the typical appearance of the rotting metal recording layer as it starts. Other than for the purposes of this video, what reason is there to keep "rotten" freature? When you buff a disc do you use the same micro size for all types of disc such as CD, DVD, & Blu-Ray? I had used an inexpwnsive machine to remove scratches from used DVDs, but it consumed too much time and gave up as it was not worth the effort.
I start collecting my DVDs in 2003 they not stretch or broke I I had them over 20 years
I have my Warner Brothers DVDs for 20 years and it still work
One of my Val Lewton double features DVDs from Warners rotted and won't play past the logos. The crummy part is that one film, "I Walked With a Zombie," is not available on HD yet and I no longer own my laserdisc copy. Fortunately the other is on BD. I have only one other disc in my collection that rotted: "Trinity and Beyond," which won't even make it past the intro before breaking up into blocking and freezing up.

Try a demo of Leawosoft Prof Media to copy the DVD i have had good success with the app with discs that have disc rot.
If its WB ask them in a email to replace them. They will replace it for free regardless of reciept just say you dont have it.
I got out my Interview with the Vampire, cause it was a box case like in the video, played about half thru and it froze. I think that is the only box case like that that I have.
i have a few warner bros' cardboard snapper case from the early 200s, and those are one of the best quality discs i have. but mine is region 3, so i guess the quality and standard for these discs, even from the same studio, is not uniformed or properly standardized in all regions... 😞

They were made in a different country and factory....that's why.
are european PAL dvds suffering from this?
@MrMissingReel

Not to that extent.....I have hundreds of DVDs and only two discs are affected by "disc rot" or manufacturing defects. Both of them were special editions of "Terminator" and "Silence of the lambs" by MGM.....these are the two that I'm at least aware of. But in the US it seems to be a huge problem....but not in europe....at least not yet.
I replaced a lot of my dvds with Blu-ray’s and 4Ks.

Doesn't always work. Old severe oxidation (or other chemical contamination) of the metal recording surface will be visible to the naked eye. Visual inspection of "previous viewed" discs is still recommended for any damage to the plastic protective layer the laser reads through. And some plastics also turn yellow on DVDs which can block laser light when it becmes dark.
I thought that it was just the WB 2006 thru 2009 cardboard case releases that were dry-rot casualties?

The cardboard discs don’t have disc but they do skip it’s been a ongoing thing on its own
the only good thing about dvd's are that people are basically giving them away. you can get them for literal pennies.

Maybe at yard sales. All the thrift stores are charging 2 to 3 dollars. And regular used stores charge 5 to 8 dollars. And if it's a rare title it can be anywhere from 15, 20 to even 50 on eBay. There was a time where you could get them for a dollar regularly but they're becoming more collectible apparently.
Sometimes a surface scratch will stop the disc from playing. In the past, rental stores used to fix them in a machine which used a paste
@weldonyoung1013

Yes it is much like buffing. However with higher density discs, like Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray, the "paste grit" or abrasive needs to be as fine as possible.

Okay so Warner is the only one that I heard had has a big problem. Why is that a reason to get rid of all of your movies. Also this isn't a problem with Blu-rays that I know of. And with me personally I haven't had any problem with my Warner DVD so far. If all 50 of your Warner movies were bad I'm wondering where you keeping them in a garage?

My definition, if Warner Brothers DVDs are bad, so are MGM and RKO. This involves thousands of movies.
I haven’t had problems with Warner bros but I had it with FOX /mgm

with some discs can just happen overtime. Used to see it all the time when I was collecting laserdiscs.
i have experienced this with my 4 favorites dvds my dirty hairy 4 favorites dvds(other than the first one) freeze at certain parts my clint eastwood 4 favorites comedies also freeze i pirated all of these because i feel like i was ripped off. if i pay for a movie it should last. i shouldn't have to pay for another copy that will most likely rot.

Fun fact: If you own an original copy of something (such as you with your Dirty Harry dvds) it's 100% legal to download a "backup" for yourself, thus it _isn't_ "pirating" !
