    at this point just release the RAW negative image data of the film to the public at 8K, you're just kidding your self at 16K it's a waste of data LMFAO, although I think rec2020 HDR at 4K should be the definitive of every film in the old days, because 8K barely really improves it if you watch 2-5m away from your screen unless you have 2020 eye sight

    35mm goes up to 4.5k almost all older films only go up to that only about 3 films and one show was shot 8k everybody still uses digital 4k or 35mm Also you need more data on disc but more data comes at cost disc lifespan being shorter due to use which is why 8k won't happen And also they can't sell them on hard drives due to legal rights issues

    When I went to film school, the Godfather was held up as a great example of manipulating the film stock for dramatic emphasis. The graininess was to give it an aged, archival look as if you were watching history.. The redness, blood. My initial impression is that they've fixed what doesn't need to be, worse yet what wasn't meant to be...hope I'm wrong.

    I've seen the 50th anniversary version in cinemas. I Gotta tell you, they've done an excellent job in creating a timeless peice that you can share with future generations, but personally i do not prefer the 50th version at all. I even like the orignal much more than the 50th anniversary version. I'd have to say the 2007 version looks to be the best of both worlds. I admit i was looking forward for that distinctive golden hue but i was kinda disappointed that they REFINED it

    The Golden tone of the prints set a new standard in Motion Pictures from then on as did the minimal mood lighting. For it to be "Fixed" misses the entire point of why the "Look" of this film has been studied in film schools since it came out.

  • @MsMarco6

    It's worth noting that the colour tone you remember is the tone from previous home releases none of which are authentic due to the limitations of SDR (all movies had to be regraded for DVD/Blu-Ray and VHS/LD destroy the og grading), and all the film prints have long since degraded. The fact is that no one can remember the specific colour tone of the theater release in 1972, not even Coppola himself, their memories are all corrupted by later releases. So all Those film classes on the colour tone of The Godfather have only ever been based on someone else's interpretation of the original work. When you appreciate that you realise that this interpretation is no less legitimate than the previous ones. Short of getting a time machine we'll never know exactly what the film looked like in 1972 so we should really stop stressing about it.

  • @sgtpepper1138

    @@MsMarco6 Film restoration expert, Robert A. Harris said "The look of The Godfather was created in the laboratory, with color timing. Very precise color timing. Mr Willis' general comment is it's 4pt yellow, 1pt red, across the board, for all three films.

  • @MsMarco6

    @MsMarco6

    Ай бұрын

    @@sgtpepper1138 Right and you have access to a time machine to pop back to the 70's and get completely untarnished prints to perform this colour correction on? Because performing it with the negatives we currently have will not produce the same results after years of degradation. And whilst Harris may know the colour timings unless he has an absolutely perfect photographic memory he won't remember the exact results that produced. Our brain is constantly tweaking our memories, they degrade (much like film) and are replaced with imagined detail. Not accurate enough to remember the fine colour details of a film you saw 50yrs ago its impossible. All of our impressions of the Godfather are based either on 50yr old memories or later releases which are definitely not accurate (compressing a film print into an SDR container requires a regrade so every released version is provably inauthentic). Harris has his DCP version and it may be truer to the original (tho you could never prove that), but at the end of the day it's not the original it's his and an old Willis's interpretation made decades after the fact. There is no magic formula for recreating the look of old films, it isn't and can never be an exact science. It's always going to be someone's interpretation of the surviving elements, in the end the colourists made their call on what looked right to them and Coppola approved. Personally I'm not a fan of Harris's attitude to preservation. He seems far too self assured, referring to his version as "correct". As if some old production notes and Willis's approval could ever prove that. That's not to say I'm not a fan of Harris, he's one of the best to ever do it & it's clear his work on the Godfather was a labour of love, for that to be thrown out in favour of a new restoration was no doubt painful. I'm simply saying that any preservationist needs to acknowledge the limitations. Any preservation work is an alteration, an alteration with the intent to restore but to pretend you can get restoration free of alteration is absurd. As far as the UHD goes it's obviously not perfect. Grain reduction was the main thing that stuck out to me. Not aggressive enough to hurt the image thankfully but it led to an uneven look between scenes as grain appears and disappears. Whilst I personally prefer 70's movies to be covered in grain (recently got the Carrie 4k, fantastic) I'm not mad at this decision. That was a far greater and more noticeable alteration than the colour grading imo. Overall though it's the best release of The Godfather available in terms purely as a viewing experience (which is surely the goal of a home release). Maybe Harris's DCP version is better who knows but guess what, he's a preservationist & his version has been preserved as a digital file in the Paramount vaults remaining untarnished for all-time. Let's not pretend this is a T2 level disaster, the look & feel of the film remains intact overall. I watched it just recently with my teen sister & she was just as impacted by it as everyone else has been over the decades and I'm certain Coppola cares more about that than pleasing every whim of the "purist".

    Well clearly not otherwise those highlight details wouldn't be there in the negative. They didn't create any new details, for an image to be blown out the detail would be blown out in the original release but if that was the case then there wouldn't be anything for them to restore. The fact they were able too shows that the highlights weren't completely blown out in the negative and therefore weren't completely blown out in the theater prints. You're right that the wedding scene was supposed to have blown highlights but only slightly (otherwise it'd be more blown out in the negative). The extremely overblown version you associate with the scene isn't original it's a consequence of the limitations of previous home releases.

    I had several reactions when I heard they were finally releasing The Godfather in 4K after years of having the format available. 1. I loved the 2007 restoration cuz it was the very first issue I saw when I got the pleasure to experience these movies. 2. I knew Gordon had died years ago so having even Coppola supervision, gave me anxiety cuz I know he’s not the level of a DP like Kubrick was as a director. 3. I have a lot of examples why Paramount (Viacom/CBS) is a terrible company and are the red headed stepchild of the movie industry. So trusting Paramount to not penny pinch and cheap out on the greatest movie ever is difficult to do. However, when I saw the 4K rerelease 1 month before it was officially released, I was left speechless. The film looked the most perfect possible. God himself could not do any better (even tho there’s a flaw in Part 2 during the Cuba revolution) but it only last 2 secs and it was a dark scene. Proud I got to see these films in this condition

    An amazon reviewer wrote that he contacted American Zoetrope about that 2 second glitch on the 4K, and they said it was left by Coppola on purpose, "to illustrate that film is an imperfect art form." The reviewer seemed credible. Now even if that story is true, American Zoetrope could have been feeding him a line of BS, or it could really have been a creative decision. Who knows. Me, I would prefer every glitch removed, as it can distract from the story telling.

    Very good work, but somebody noticed black and white people at wedding scene, they are in the background. They also appear in previous version but less. So that's a mistake. Another thing I noticed is how beautifully composed film looks in 4:3 aspect ratio! I hope one day can release it min 4:3, aside from beautiful composition it would also benefit from the increased sharpness of full frame because 1.85:1 is zoomed in.

  • @G.RobertMoore-dk4sz

    @G.RobertMoore-dk4sz

    4 ай бұрын

    I think when you refer to 4:3 you were noticing a clip showing an open matte still or footage. Sometimes an open matte happens to be well framed, but this movie was definitely not composed for 4:3 (SD TV and also roughly Academy Ratio). More often than not, even if some shots look good, many other open mattes have poor composition or literally unacceptable issues like showing past the fully decorated set or revealing things like lights, microphones, cables, ladders, stagehands, etc.

    My father still has an unused print from when he was a projectionist. The theater was sent an extra print and my dads boss told him to keep it. It’s still in perfect condition and it was never used. Paramount offered my dad tons of money a few years back and he refused and still refuses. He got upset with me because I reached out to paramount to let them know. Oh well, maybe he will leave to me so we can see The God Father in the way it was meant to be seen.

    Sorry to be a buzz-kill but, I just don't get it. The comparison at 15:49 is one example of many where, to my eye, every aspect of the image has been degraded. The skin looks positively artificial. And so much effort to lighten all the shadows? I guess there are plenty of Rembrandts that need "correction" then. In a few years this will just be the "2022" version with it's cliche trendy blue/beige emphasis that you see in every current TV show, newscast and stock photo. I agree with other commenters - Gordon Willis must be turning in his grave. Coppola approves of this?

    11:53 Side by side of Johnny Fontaine shows just how egregiously they destroyed Gordon Willis' shadowy golden artistry. I saw this in the theaters. I thought it was beautiful. But looking at a lot of these side by sides, I think they did a terrible disservice in terms of color and lighting.

    I wonder why people always have to remaster films or music. Why?? Has the quality gone bad? Do we really need to change things? Isn't good good enough anymore? When i look at the two versions in the screen, i like the unremastered version much better. To me, remastering is not (always) a good thing. It's as if there is a group of people on this planet that seem to think that things should be refurbished. You also see it when they do new versions of tv-series or movies that have been done. Why??? Don't they have their own ideas? They just steal what's already been done, put new "stars" in the movie or music, and well ladies and gentlemen: we have made a great movie or song. It's ridiculous. Shameful. It's showing off other people's feathers. I mean, when it's a really important film (like for instance World War documentaries that have gone bad because of time), i can understand that these films are enhanced, but for God's sake, why do we need stuff like Grease 2, Dynasty remake, Star Wars remake, Charmed remake and so on. It's such a load of crap. And: the reason for this is very clear to me: there are people (filmmakers, producers and so on) that think they do it better. They are the entitled people. It's horrible.

    Personally I would want to watch a movie without scratches, fading and hisses. As long as the creative forces can restore the film to the original standard as it was first released, I see this as a win win.

    Remastered music, when done well, is transferred from its original analog format to a higher quality audio medium. Yes, analog to digital audio converters have improved a LOT over the years. As for films, just the same. The equipment to transfer these works of art have improved a lot over time. When DVD came out, high definition with standard dynamic range (REC 709) transfers were common. In the year 2022, 8K with high dynamic range exposure is the standard. Also, audio quality is better thanks to lossless encoding!

    @@AR7271 Lossless have been a possibility for several decades, MP3 and such formats existed to cut down storage-space which truly were the issue back then. 4k being able to hold 66Gb-100GB unlocked the possibility to use lossless at the finest possible quality.

    At 3:00 it's too bad they changed the color of people' hair in the front from brown to black. And the gentleman who's behind the microphone, had a brown color suit. Brown. Now it's dark grey. These brown colors were there for a reason. In the 2022 version of this scene, too much of its warmth is now lost.

    That is because they show SDR Clips of something intended to be seen in HDR. When you see the HDR the colors will pop out, far better dynamics at a higher bitrate. If you prefer the lower Bitrate color of the 2010's, so be it.

    Also negatives colors are more accurate before 4k blu ray every version was 2k print which isn't as accurate as the negative the negative colors are correct and not the 2k prints Reasons they use 2k prints is that the negative degrades over use so they copy it and make 2k prints they never bothered using negative because standard blu ray could go up to 2k and color spectrum wasn't wide enough due to hdr10 and dolby vision not existing Even old theaters only used 2k prints

    Have you seen it on your screen, with HDR? Because it's calibrated for HDR and what you see here is SDR.
