4K Movies: 10 Outstanding, Reference Quality Titles For New Collectors

Фильм және анимация

A discussion of my 10 favorite 4K UHD releases to date, plus some honorable mentions. These are demo-worthy, reference-quality 4K titles on physical media that really show off everything the 4K format is capable of.
For those interested in buying the Studiocanal 4K release of the Fifth Element, it's available at the following Amazon U.S. link (ignore the "Region B" note in the listing. The 4K disc is region free, and there is no blu-ray included with this release):
www.amazon.com/The-Fifth-Elem...
Also, if you're interested in the limited edition Dawn of the Dead 4K box I displayed (UK release from Second Sight -- there is no U.S. release), you can also still order it from Amazon U.S. at the following link. It comes with three region-free 4K discs (3 cuts of the film) and then a special features blu-ray disc that is Region B. www.amazon.com/Dawn-Dead-4K-U...
Side note: This video also functions as an unofficial "Back to Basics" installment, since it is partially intended for those who are new to 4K and just starting out with building a collection.

    Oh right on! Yeah that Amityville 4K looks unbelievable and really surprised me. I hadn't seen it for like 20+ years prior to that, and I was expecting this kind of drab, dreary film with a muted color palette that I remembered seeing years earlier. But the film just really comes alive in Vinegar Syndrome's hands. Didn't know it could look that good!

    Great video! I happen to have most of these titles and they don't disappoint. One 4K disc I feel doesn’t get NEARLY the recognition it deserves is “The Revenant”. Yeah the film itself probably isn’t that widely remembered, but I was blown away by the image quality when I first watched it. The movie was shot outdoors and contains loads of landscape shots which really take advantage of the 4K format. I would definitely recommend it! One other movie worth having is "Coraline". You wouldn't normally think of stop motion movies when it comes to "reference quality", but trust me, it looks fantastic.

    Suspiria is a title I never knew of and bought the 4K used off a facebook seller since so many youtubers were praising it when it came out. I was stunned by how much I didn't care about the story because the visuals and that Atmos track were so good on my setup. The Thing is definitely one that surprised me how good it looked. Some not mentioned and different genres: Apocalypse Now Awaken (Gunpowder & Sky release) is and art piece with incredible picture. No story, possible minutes worth of dialog, just stunning imagery and music. If you have a good suboofer setup the music will surprise you. Basic Instinct (Studio Canal) I can't get over how good that looked. Coraline Just WOW My Fair Lady Shadow (Well Go USA) Mostly black and white and with subtitles. Just a beautifully shot movie. They Live 4K transfer far exceeded any expectation I have for any film with alone this one.

I have that gorgeous Scream Factory steelbook, and I think SF knocked it out of the park, both with the packaging/artwork and the restoration/transfer itself. I still need to pick up Basic Instinct on 4K... I'm a big Michael Douglas fan, but I've still not upgraded that title yet from blu-ray. It's on my list though. Thanks for watching!

    The most stunning 4K of a movie shot on film (in my collection) is: The Final Countdown (1980) from Blue Underground. It was scanned at 16-bit/4K. The scenes of the F-14 Tomcats flying over the Pacific Ocean have tremendous depth. A few of the special effects don't hold up but overall it's better than Top Gun in that regard. Gemini Man was the best experience I ever had watching a 3D movie in a theater, 3D + HFR is like being in a Holodeck.

    Oh yeah! I love The Final Countdown. I totally forgot about that one, or I would've at least mentioned it. I too have that Blue Underground 4K and it's fantastic! @@Sas-wk9lj Hmmm... I'm not really sure how to respond to that, honestly. No special equipment here... the film just looks amazing on the 4K format to my eyes. It's easily the best this particular film has ever looked -- a viewpoint that seems to be the wide consensus on this release, based on everyone else I've talked to about this who also owns it. It's frequently cited among other collectors as one of the best 4K restorations Blue Underground has ever released. It certainly does not look like a 720p upscaled picture to me. But it is a 40+ year-old movie shot on film, so if you're not a fan of film grain or what not, maybe it's not your cup of tea? Sorry to hear you didn't care for this one as much.

I’ve upgraded my sound system and I can already tell you I’ve preferred buying a disk over streaming as the audio quality alone is worth the money. Was just randomly recommended this video, and it was a really good watch! From the video and the comments section, it seems like if it was a movie good enough to be broadly popular (or at least, a movie that I like / caters to the tastes that seem popular here), it's likely there's a good 4K version. So i guess my big question would actually be, what movie that a movie collector might want to have in his library had a bad enough or mediocre enough 4K edition that you might as well stay with your old Blu-ray? Because I've now replaced a lot of my titles twice, once from VHS to dvd and then from dvd to Blu-ray....

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    @TheOriginalFuzz

    6 ай бұрын

    Yeah generally speaking, between the higher resolution, the HDR and wider color gamut, 4K usually looks better than blu ray for most films... it's just a matter of to what degree. For some titles, the difference is substantial, but for others, the improvement might be more minimal. It's really on a case-by-case basis. But overall, yes, 4K is usually better for most titles. I think some of the most commonly cited "worst" 4K titles (as of right now) are Terminator 2, Pirates of the Caribbean, Goodfellas, and Planes Trains and Automobiles. I would also add The Core to that list... I think the blu ray is probably better. Also, the Jason Bourne movies are only a modest improvement (may be negligible depending on the individual). I've also heard the Olympus Has Fallen movies didn't turn out too great on 4K, but I've not seen these myself. But your own mileage may vary on any of these. Everyone's eyes are different. Hope this helps a bit. Thanks for watching!

I was actually kind of a late bloomer to Kate Bush (only really discovered her music in the last 10-15 years, despite being a long-time huge fan of progressive rock and artists like Peter Gabriel). But once I did, I fell for her music HARD! LMAO! Became a big fan. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Is the sound just not something you get into as much as the visuals?

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    @TheOriginalFuzz

    10 ай бұрын

    You bring up a great point (and a totally fair one at that). I get that audio is a huge factor for a lot of home theater enthusiasts. But honestly, with movies, the audio is not something I feel qualified to talk about, because I don't have an Atmos setup -- so I can't evaluate the audio properly. I'm still just using a traditional 5.1 surround system (no height speakers, etc.). So that's the main reason I focus primarily on the visuals. It's weird, because I am a big audio guy when it comes to music, but admittedly for movies, the audio isn't as critical for me. Part of the reason is just because a lot of my movie viewing happens late at night after the family goes to bed, etc., so I often have to use headphones for night viewing. I'm not always able to watch a film with even my full 5.1 system. I can tell the difference between different mixes when I do use my 5.1 speakers (Atmos vs. 5.1 vs. DTS-X, etc.), but the audio overall is just not something I feel I can give very good information about when discussing these films, so I just don't really talk about it much. Thanks for watching!

I would've loved to have seen it in 3D at 120, but the movie wasn't really on my radar back then. But I think even at 60 FPS, this movie looks ridiculously good! I'm actually on the fence as to which one I'm gonna get. I pre-ordered them both, but I'm thinking I'll probably end up going with the Best Buy steelbook, just to save a little money. The box set is quite pricey on Amazon (it's like $100 right now), and after seeing what happened with the comparable Enter the Dragon box set that WB released last week, I'm not too confident the price on the Exorcist box will drop by very much during the pre-order period. Thanks for the interesting video. Fun list. In non-technical layman's terms, what is the difference between Blu-ray and 4K as a viewer/listener? (Some years ago, I compared DVD and Blu-ray side by side and found the Blu-ray image sharper and the colour more accurate with less bleeding.). So, what's the deal with 4K vs Blu-ray?

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    @TheOriginalFuzz

    10 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching! 4K (or Ultra High Definition) is a kind of blu ray disc, but it has 4 times the resolution of a standard 1080p HD blu ray and requires a special 4K player to play these discs. In addition to higher resolution, 4K also has High Dynamic Range and a wider color gamut (blu ray has Standard Dynamic Range by comparison). So the same things that you cited when comparing DVD to blu ray are even more pronounced when comparing blu ray to 4K. So for example with the HDR on a 4K disc, you can see more detail in darker areas of the image than you ever could with blu ray, and brighter areas will not look as "blown out" on 4K as with blu ray (thus offering more detail). And the colors are more accurate on 4K as well, because of the much wider color gamut (a lot more colors to work with). So often times, the 4K looks a lot closer to the original theatrical presentation than we ever got with blu ray. A 4K image in general just has more depth and "pop" to it. But keep in mind, the difference between blu ray and 4K is not nearly as big as the difference between DVD and blu ray. Going from DVD to blu ray was a huge jump in quality. That leap is not as big when going from blu to 4K. But I still think it's a significant improvement overall, and in many cases, I find the 4K is the best the film has ever looked. I did a video a couple months ago evaluating 4K restorations of older films and talking about why some films look better than others on the format, etc. It's a longer video, but you may find it interesting if you're curious about 4K and wanting to learn more about the format. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqGpspmhdKjJZZc.html&t

    If you get any stuttering while playing back Gemini Man, the solution might be that you have to upgrade your HDMI cables to a higher specification, as it is one of a VERY few 4K movies shot in a nonstandard frame rate, this being 60fps.

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    @TheOriginalFuzz

    Never had any problems with mine on my system, but yeah, I do have high-speed/high-capacity cables. Personally, I like the high frame rate in this movie, but I know not everyone does. Technically, it was shot at 120 fps (and I think that's the frame rate they exhibited the film at in 3D when it first came out -- I would've loved to have seen that, in retrospect). So we got a bit of a "downgrade" for the 4K release at 60 fps (although given the complaints I've read/heard about the 60 fps presentation, I'm guessing those same people would really hate seeing the full meal deal at 120. Lol.). Thanks for watching!

    I was so impressed with Doctor Sleep. A worthy successor to the original. HOWEVER, and this is a MUST, don't bother with the theatrical version. First viewing, last viewing, the only version is THE DIRECTOR'S CUT. The theatrical release was butchered for running time and spoils the film entirely. The obvious edits make the transitions choppy, and you are robbed of great stuff.

    I would also recommend the stunning 4k upgrade of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. Being a new owner of a Panasonic Ultra HD player I am absolutely flabbergasted at the quality of the picture and sound even though I have a cheaper model DB-UP150 it still has amazing picture and sound like no other player I've previously owned. Also, I can't recommend highly enough the BBC produced PLANET EARTH II and BLUE PLANET II for truly stunning picture and color and the nature sounds just pop off my Bose 900 in ultra clarity. An excellent choice for reference quality Ultra HD. Love your channel and have subscribed.

I've also heard those BBC Earth docs are absolutely incredible, reference quality discs. I haven't seen any of them myself yet. Thanks for watching and weighing in!

    Algorithm brought me here. Awesome advice!! I just got back to physical media the last couple of years. My main thing was the audio of these titles is sooo much better from the uncompressed discs. Im curious to hear your thoughts, or do you just watch for visuals?

    I only have a 5.1 surround sound system (no Dolby Atmos), so I just haven't been able to get the full benefit of our modern Atmos mixes. And because of that, I don't really talk about the audio that much, because I don't feel like I have the equipment to properly evaluate object-based surround sound mixes, like Atmos and DTS-X. I can hear the difference in the mixes on my 5.1 system, and I agree the audio sounds great for so many 4K titles. But I don't get the full benefits of the mixes. Eventually I'll probably upgrade to an Atmos setup at some point. Plus, a lot of times, I'm watching movies late at night with my Beats headphones -- which are a really good set of cans, but of course, it's not the same kind of immersion as a live speaker setup. So for these reasons, I don't focus on the audio as much in my videos. But that could change down the line with equipment upgrades. Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it.

    I personally think the best talking modern 4K Blu-ray is Thor love and thunder, and for older movies from the 80s Poltergeist!!! Also on a sidenote The Shining 4K is amazing as well but I might be a little biased because that’s one of my favorites!!!

    I assume you're referring to the Ryan Gosling film? I haven't seen the 4K yet myself, but I have heard the Second Sight 4K release is excellent. I'm sure 4K will be the best visually... it's very seldom with 4K that there isn't at least some kind of improvement over blu ray, due to the HDR and wider color gamut. But I've never seen the previous blu ray either, so I can't really offer a comparison. Here's a review of the 4K though that might help: thedigitalbits.com/item/drive-second-sight-2023-uhd
