No movie changed Hollywood more than THE GODFATHER. From the bestselling novel by Mario Puzo to box-office blockbuster, its influential legacy endures to this day. Starring Marlon Brando in his Oscar®-winning performance as the patriarch of the Corleone family, this first installment in the three-movie saga paints a dramatic portrait of the Sicilian clan’s rise and near fall from power in America. One thing that almost nobody wants to admit about The Godfather is that its' popularity was kind of dangerous, considering it was such a romanticized portrayal of the mob. Before it came out, the Mafia was something infamous and globally despised, and then after The Godfather people started glorifying and justifying it (and many still do to this day). People like John Gotti would've never become celebrities if it wasn't for that movie.

The Godfather is told from the top of the ranks. The Don himself and his immediate family, the ones who made it. There was also the fact that Joe Colombo, boss of the Colombo Family, threatened production to not villianize the Mafia. Goodfellas is told from street view gangsters who want to rise but are hindered. There was a point in time when the Mafia were respected. Figures like Frank Costello, Carlo Gambino, Tony Accardo and Tommy Lucchese looked out for the common man and kept things safe. Now it's all over.

Interestingly, the qualities of “honor” and “loyalty” that are “romanticized” in The Godfather are sorely lacking in most of the characters in the film )and book). As in the book, they are mostly embodied in Don Corleone and as the book goes to great lengths to explain, they are sort-of the secret sauce of his “rags to riches - made in America” success story. Also…while Vito seems to receive much love and admiration from family and seems to take great satisfaction in what he has built for himself and family, Michael seems forever trapped in a state of tragic joyless loneliness that Al Pacino conveys beautifully. Just compare the vibe of scenes in Part 1 and 2 of Vito with Sonny, Hagen, Clemenza and Tessio (light /loving) scenes of Michael with Hagen, Al Neri and Rocco Lampone (existential dread). Michael’s life is sort-of a letdown and he knows. I never found this romantic. The contrast between Vito and Michael was never really a factor in the book. Michael was a “continuation” of Vito. In the film I always thought that Coppola and Puzo really went out of their way to emphasize a grim tragic loneliness in Michael’s life. The Family never really manages to “go legit”. He feels he has to kill his brother. It’s awful. He’s trapped and dies alone.

I love, LOVE "The Godfather", but let´s not forget "Goodfellas". It´s "just" one movie, but I think shows like "The Sopranos" own a lot more to "Goodfellas" than to "The Godfather". "Goodfellas" is about the "common" guys, not the almost mythical figures in "The Godfather".
