Superman and Batman Versus Aliens and Predator Versus Common Sense - Comic Tropes (Episode 51)

Dark Horse Comics has been making cool Aliens and Predator comics for decades. They've even had some good crossovers with DC Comics using Batman and Superman. But when they tried to use all four, the results were less than exciting. There was very little tension because these two superheroes never face much of a challenge. Most of the stress comes from Superman making some bad decisions.

Maybe it was to save themselves from the dishonour and shame of needing to be rescued by the rest of their people from one of their own hunting grounds? Or it could’ve been to stop the other Predators from finding out what had happened to them that caused them to get stranded on Earth in the first place.

The Predators were so useless in this story. You know what they could have done? Replace the large group of useless Predators who we never get to know, with just one singular one who's the last of his kind, and like a completely salty bastard. And to make him a possible threat to Superman, replace all of his alien tech with magical tech that he picked up over time on earth. So he's still got that mix-and-match Predator aesthetic, but slightly different for this story.

I'm a little late to this party, but a chunk of kryptonite made into a knife or speartip would have made a Predator a bit more of a threat. Superman isn't weak to magic. He's weak to anything that's strong enough to punch through a tank, and that just happens to be magic. I'm saying that because there are writers out there who think Superman is like an anti-magic vampire, who will shrivel up if he touches anything magical. He's not. I don't think there's any flaw in the Predators calling Superman a sun god. Just because they don't know who the Superman of Earth is that doesn't mean they won't know what a Kryptonian is. These Predators are supposedly 10s of thousands of years of old. Krypton only blew up 30-40 years ago in this story, and given how old these Predators are they could have heard stories of "sun gods" who become extra poweful when they leave their world for a yellow star.

It almost seems like this story was heavily edited down from a cool original concept “these predators are from 14,000 years ago and have become more primal than their modern counterparts and are less honor bound” Wait. Bigger gripe. What were the predators incubating the aliens in? The facehuggers need hosts. Were they kidnapping humans from the surface since the ice age? Were they sacrificing other predators? Wouldn’t these all be predaliens then?? The writer didn’t seem to understand any of the source materials or had his story edited down to a nub of nonsense.

To have Superman and Batman begin by investigating missing villagers from a remote village, which only recently "joined" the outside world, and which claims to routinely make human sacrifices to it's "gods" would have been more interesting. Imagine a scene where they reveal drawings of their gods and devils to Batman, and they're Predators and Aliens. Also aren't there multiple alien contacts over the course of the DC universe? People being told there were two other alien species living among them for a while would find it distinctly meh.

Batman's ego would not let him get carried by Superman. Its a guy thing.Batman is prepared for Predators so he isn't surprised more than once or twice. He likes living.Darkseid would not be too thrilled with other aliens trying to destroy Earth. That's HIS Earth to destroy at his pleasure and he don't share with anyone. He would have intervened just to upstage Superman if Luthor didn't do it first.

Interesting point about how dumb it is Superman trying to save the Xeno's in the first comic where he encountered them, he also tried to spare the first one he ran across, trying to reason with it, then trying to restrain it and finally trying to fight it while weakened being away from the sun, he punches it and got acid blood in his eyes, blinding himself. So really he should know not to try and spare them.

I have the book on the making of The Phantom Menace. There were a LOT of practical sets and miniatures. Mostly, actually. I don’t know where everyone got this “it’s all green screen” idea. Have you watched the movie recently? The Tattooine section is about a third of it, and it’s all Tunisia just like A New Hope. Naboo’s Italy. Coruscant is sets on a soundstage and miniatures for exteriors.

As far as taking Lois along Superman may have figured out that wherever he goes Lois is going to end up in danger so he's just keeping her close for efficiency's sake. As for the Predators, in the Dark Horse continuity they're supposed to be called Yautja so yeah, that's a screw up.

I'm not familiar with Batman's previous run ins with the Predator species, but if they were ever handled well, considering the species never does anything other than hunt the most dangerous game across the galaxy, Predators is a pretty easy conclusion to come to, especially for a great detective.
