I get what you mean, and if it were up to me I would have NEVER brought Kraven back. But, I did think that his return storyline in The Gauntlet/Grim Hunt were pretty well done (for the most part) considering we were just coming off the heels of the whole OMD debacle. Those were pretty bleak years for Spider-Man stories. But the Gauntlet provided lots of standout moments before the return of Kraven, such as Kelly's Rhino story and one off Deadpool vs. Spider-Man (for the first time) issue, Slott's Mysterio story, and the Lizard SHED storyline. Joe Kelly's Grim Hunt was a perfect capstone on the whole ordeal, showing that bringing back Kraven in a state of cursed "unlife" may have been a big mistake for his whole family. I also thought that the revived Kraven was used very effectively during his few limited appearances in Agent Venom and Scarlet Spider. He's been used so sparingly, that he's kinda graduated to upper B-List tier, just bellow Venom, Doc Ock and Osborn. I hope they can keep him at that level as an effective threat in the future, otherwise all that good writing would have been for nothing and....oh who am I kidding.

None of those books measure up to Kraven's Last Hunt, but I'd say those are all pretty good recent Spider-Man stories that I mentioned. I highly recommend Joe Kelly's Two Rhino issues, and the entirety of Agent Venom and Scarlet Spider (2012). As for Squirrel Girl, I just figured that it was a comedy book, with no repercussions or effects on the greater marvel canon outside of it's own plotlines. Kinda like how Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen's Nextwave or Howard The Duck had it's way with the entire obscure Marvel Universe and no other writer mentioned anything that happened in those book outside of it. Read em if you enjoy em, ignore em if you don't. No harm, no foul. =)

@@canijustplease conpletley agree. In a small bit of marvel weird trivia, there was a series of really fun Spider-man novels, that introduced many concepts that would inspire later Marvel stories. Such as Morlun having a family, Peter Parker having a long lost sister, and the character of The Gentleman (Gustav Fiers), who would be used as that "shadowy dude at the end of the Amazing Spider-Man films". The writer of the sinister six trillogy was using Mysterio on his roster and during the last book, Mysterio fails to complete his part of the plan. Not because of Spidey beating him up, but because he is in such pain from his cancer that he collapses on the street and has to ask a random civilian to call an ambulance for him. Reading it as a teen, it through me for a loop, seeing a villain taken out by a disease and not by the hero. It also made his reasons for going after Daredevil so much more clearer in the end. Afterwards, Peter David brings him back from hell with a giant fucking gunshot wound in his face during Civil War, more recent Spidey issues say that the whole thing was all a trick and he's been alive all this time (Kingsley style) while not outright denying the demonic connection, Joe Kelly brings back the idea that Mysterio actually died by using him as a demon pawn in Mephisto's campaign against Spidey in Spider-Man/Deadpool, Peter David and Nick Spencer continue this trend in the recent Scarlet Spider and Amazing Spider-Man series, showing that there is more to Quinton Beck's "ressurection" than first thought. Basically, since Mysterios actual death happened in Daredevil instead of a Spidey book, many writers either ignored it by accident, tried to work around it, forgot about it, or just brought him back because with Mysterio "nothing is as it seems" and they like keeping the readers guessing. Mysterio's death has kinda become the weirdest storyline oversight at Marvel and I kinda love it because that kinda thing really works with his character.

The suicide is incredibly important to the overall message of the story. Kraven becomes a better Spider but does nothing towards maintaining the Man so his life is empty and sad, full of violence and death so his own death comes by his own hand. The Spider is lethal and solitary like Kraven and even trapping Vermin in a cage shows that Kraven is allowing the Spider to be in control. Peter has Mary Jane and many others in his life to keep him from allowing the Spider to be in control. This is shown at a lot of different points in Peter's life where he loses someone or ends up alone. When he thought himself to be a clone he got more violent in his depression. It is actually a constant battle for Peter to maintain control which is why the symbiote made for an interesting storyline. The hyphen is important to Spider-Man's identity because it is a dual identity much more than Batman or Superman and most of the best stories, including kraven's last hunt, explore that aspect of him. The Man takes care of others and therefore has others in his life to take care of him. The Spider deals violence and death to its prey which even includes it's own kind, spiders and rats are both pests, so it is alone which is not a way that a Man can survive.

Thank you, Sir. I am in my mid 50's and bought this comic when it first came out. To me the Last Hunt will always be one of the top graphic tales ever told. I totally put it up there with Watchmen and Miller's Dark Knight story. Its adult theme still resonates even today. The story of a man devoured by his own obsession that in the end destroys him. His existence was always defined by proving himself better then the hero he hunted. Once defeating the hero he needed to prove that he was greater then the hero by taking up the mantel of Spider-man. In doing so it put him on the final track of his last days. He was consumed and plagued by obsession that in the end he came to realize his existence was now meaningless. He had accomplished his goal of "killing" his adversary and proving he was the better Spider-man that life carried no further worth for living. He had been the apex of the hunter and devoured his prey in order to become it and prove he was its better. There is such a sadness to this story and it deeply affected me when I first read it. When I was growing up comics had a stigma of being just for children. This tale along with others at the time proved otherwise. They are an idolized reflection of our dream of that greater society, which we want so much for our world to live up too. And they are also a glimpse of our darkest desires and nightmare which we try so hard to hide...behind a mask. Kudos for bringing your thoughts to this amazing tale. Lore

None of this stupid trend of "outrage politics" bullshit that youtube scam artists use to piss off their left and right wing buffoon viewers, in order to scam more money from them by telling them to be angry at what the other side is doing. One thing about this story that I never could buy. Spider-Man digs himself out of his grave after two weeks, goes straight to Mary Jane, and they immediately make love. Now I can buy radioactive spiders giving you superpowers, I can buy vigilantes in tights and cosmic beings shaping the universe, but there is NO WAY a woman is going to let a man touch her when he's been stewing in his own stink for two weeks. Not to mention after that amount of time her emotions would be so worked up, all of that frustration would be directed right at Peter. She'd yell, she'd scream, she may even slap him across the face. Eventually she would break down crying, falling into Peter's arms as the last of her pent up emotions work themselves out. She's not mad at Peter. She'd simply have no other outlet for the worry and frustration she felt over that time. It would be perfectly understandable for her to be that way. After years of coming to accept Peter as Spider-Man and finally deciding to spend the rest of her life with him, the first thing that happens is her believing him to be dead. It's a minor thing in an otherwise great story, but I think a mark was missed by not having Mary Jane's reaction to Peter coming home be more realistic.

I struggle with depression, i am suicidal and ive survived a few attempts. I still do therapy, im on medication for life. And i am usually numb and joyless. I have a lot to live for all things considered an amazing spouse, kids, etc. But suicidal thoughts still creep into my thoughts. It's just a symptom, kraven's death is pretty parallel to my struggles. Manic energy, feelings of emptyness and well that last part. :/ its a bit like my BPD in that sense the story is amazingly well written and it's a story that should be told. However when suicides are shown in media it can actually make suicidal ideation worse. It now gives those intrusive thoughts more of a voice more of a purpose and it starts looking like a plan. That said i read the story as a kid, and it was one of the reasons that i went and got help. Since it made a point to show that depression if left untreated can end you. And im here, im alive. RIP kraven.

I just read Volume 1 of Justice League/JLI and Giffen in the forward admits he was a little green in the writing department and he asked for someone to help on dialog. They gave him JM Dematteis and they both wanted it to be more serious, but it kinda worked out more as humorous tone because of they were only allowed to use little known or underused characters (except for Batman).

This is still one of my favourite books of all time! I remember first reading it as a kid in the ‘80’s and it blew my mind. It even gave me nightmares. I was like 8 years old. That story always stayed with me so I would always revisit it and as I got older, I started appreciating and then loving it. It’s just brilliant. Haunting. Disturbing and a love story so well done. MJ’s anxiety about Peter being missing and possibly hurt or dead. Peter’s will power to not give up and get home to MJ. Just brilliant. And yes those covers were all home runs. The Web of Spider-Man cover with the Black suited Spidey rising from his grave is one of the greatest ever.

Awesome vid, Chris! I never read Kraven's Last Hunt before, but it looks like a great story. I'd heard of this story arc, but didn't know it involved Kraven's suicide. That is an incredibly gutsy way to end one of Spider-Man's most underrated villians. Too bad they couldn't leave well enough alone. Death and resurrection seems to be a recurring trend...or trope...in comics which kind of lost any kind of meaningful impact over the years. Love the art. I've been a Zeck fan since his run on Captain America and Secret Wars. Thanks for posting this!

I love this video and it's made me a subscriber, but I feel in the plot summary, there's one thing you fail to mention that makes the last entry of the story so great. The entire time that Peter Parker's in the sewers, he's constantly fighting back against the primal sensations of fear and terror, still trying to recover from his time in the grave, at points hoping that he doesn't run into Vermin and resisting the urge to run away. When the does run into Vermin, he's absolutely terrified, to the point where he even struggles to make his characteristic sarcastic quips. This is Peter at his "Knightfall" moment. But he doesn't give in, because in true Spider-Man fashion, he knows he has a responsibility to both Vermin and the people of New York to stop him. Vermin once again starts getting the upper hand, even forcing Parker to flee for his life. But he stops, confronts Vermin again, has him down for the count, and even contemplates killing him then and there, almost giving in to the Spider. But instead, as you mention, he brings Vermin topside, ties him up in webbing, and notes that this isn't really Vermin's fault, as his transformation at the hands of Baron Zemo wasn't a willing one, and instead of having him taken to jail, he hands him over to Reed Richards to try and find a cure for his condition. All this is important, because it not only shows that Peter Parker is as good if not better at being the Spider than Kraven is, more importantly, he's also the better Man, as he can find the happiness and satisfaction in his life through love and compassion that Kraven can only get fleeting feelings of before his end, whose notions of love and responsibility are clearly warped from his traumatic past. And I think that this is an exemplary depiction that shows what the core of Spider-Man's character really is; a good person whose love, compassion and sense of responsibility are what make him a great superhero.

Nice review. What you said about Spider-Man's villains is the key reason to why they are so memorable. They completely mirror Peter Parker as a person. When each villain was introduced (as their own story and not as an excuse for an adventure or action) they shared or was some metaphor of a flaw that Peter Parker had. And Spider-Man [the persona] was the answer for it. The thing that made Spider-Man so lovable and relatable wasn't quipping or comedy (or any of that trash the current writers spew out); it was that Spider-Man represented doing good within your power-- that doing good was the path of being a morally good person. Peter Parker [and more exaggerated extent his villains] all have the major flaw of excuse for powerlessness. For Pete [before the bite] it was him being a self-absorbed asshat ( he was and he still is, that is why I really loved it, when they made him racist-- against Mutants--in the 90's), but the power of the Spider-Man persona forces him to drop the excuse and do good. This is Peter's Delima: Standing up for himself and taking responsibility. His villains do not take responsibility of morality and use excuse after excuse to justify their deeds. Deeds that Spider-Man deters forcing Pete to constantly see what he can become if he throws away responsibility. Literary his villains are just as emotionally weak as Peter's old self. Every Spider-Man villain at their core is a very sad story of lacking moral responsibility.

i got to meet mike zeck at a comic con once, it was kinda a happy accident because i didn’t know he was supposed to be there and i lived close by and was able to go get my secret wars #8 book for him to sign (i also bought a stack of artwork), and we talked for easily 30 minutes i don’t know why many people weren’t coming to see him, he’s a great guy and we talked art techniques and what not.

Same here. I met Mike Zeck a few years ago at a local comic con. He was very approachable and super nice to talk with. Unfortunately, very few people were lining up to see him. I was disappointed with the fans to be honest, as Zeck is one of the giants and his talent is way better then most artists in the industry today. Just my humble opinion.

Before I watch this video I would like to say how excited the title got me. I just got an English degree and I got 4 credits from taking a directed studies on the superhero genre with a professor that had managed to get some classes on comics approved. My final project was a huge essay on Spider-Man, Wolverine, Superman, and Batman. The Spider-Man section had a part all about the spider and the man where I referenced the hell out of kraven's last hunt. So yeah, I have studied and written on this story in university. Got an A+ too

I read this story recently in the the Epic Collection. And Holy Cow, does it hold up. I knew pretty much all the plot points, ideas, and twists, but that didn't stop me from being completely captivated while reading. I do not blame people for believing that it's the objectively best Spider-man story.

Secret Wars #7, 8, 9 were literally the very first comics I ever bought for myself. They were in a 3 pack in a toy store and for whatever reason I didn't get the remaining issues when I saw them on the rack as they were released. I was ten and wouldn't start collecting comics for another 3 years. It was also the time when I was starting to draw people, so Mike Zeck was the very first artist to influence my art. Years later I would go on to worship at the alters of Jim Lee and Alan Davis, heh, but there will always be a special place in my heart for Mr. Zeck, and I look forward to that video.

Kraven : "I need to prove myself better than Spider-Man, to show that I am the alpha" Me: wouldn't it suck if he found out the Hulk was roaming around out there? Throwing people into space and smashing gods. If Spider-Man can make Kraven feel that insecure well Hulk or Thor would ruin him probably without even having to do anything.

I started collecting Amazing Spider-Man only a few issues after the Last Hunt run. I was about 10 years old and I still remember reading the Letters to the Editor regarding peoples reactions to the ending of the Last Hunt. It was my first experience of comics being deeply emotionally resonant and gave me a glimpse of the potential depth and power of the medium at an early age.

Hi Chris, KLH is a favorite of mine. It says a lot about your channel that I sat through and thoroughly enjoyed your recap of a story I have read literally dozens of times, so kudos. One aspect of KLH that I encourage everyone to think about is that this is a story about CLASS. Consider: Kraven represents the upper class. He identifies with the aristocracy. He is aging and fears the proles, especially as personified by Spiderman (the quintessential working-class superhero). Kraven is especially terrified of the potential for the proles to organize, as symbolized by the giant spider made up of many small spiders. Spiderman represents the middle class, while Vermin obviously represents the underclass. Kraven terrorizes Vermin, but convinces him that Spiderman is his enemy. Kraven kills himself not just because he 'proved himself to be the better Spiderman,' but because he turned the underclass against the middle, thus protecting himself and his aristocratic class from any meaningful class revolution. Having succeeded in this, he ragequits.

Chris... Mr. Tropes?... Chris, I only recently found your channel, and while we will have to agree to disagree about Dan Slott's run, this long term comic fan has been enjoying going back and watching. This however... was something above and beyond. I too read this as a teenager (but since I was born in the 80s, I knew the ending) around the same time I read Daredevil: Born Again. Both of which I have always thought, while highly praised, have not gotten the attention they deserve as the step up for the comic medium they were. Both are great, both hold up, but Kraven's last Hunt was my favorite of the two. Dematteis being chief among the reasons. Like the literature you say it is, there are multiple interpretations. I like your view on Kraven's view of Spider-Man, being only a proficient fighter. I personally felt that Kraven viewed him almost as a wraith, or animal, that there was no man under the mask. The one critique I have (not complaint, I want to stress that), I wish you would have talked about the Peter-MJ relationship. I believe it to be the heart of the story. Also, being the the first monthly story after the marriage, it solidified it in many people's minds. I also disagree about Pete not getting enough light, his journey is what I found most compelling at times, but that is a matter of opinion. I also like that it set off a series of more thriller like stories (Death of Harry Osborn, first Venom, Hell, Demateis actually said when he wrote spider-man full time he tried to steer it that way). I hope you will one day do a Tropes on Dematteis, he has plenty; philosophical leanings, compassion and fleshing out of villains, highlighting the everyday, neuroses etc.. I would recommend Spec. Spider-Man #200 I often communicate with Dematteis via his website. He is usually happy to talk to fans and very welcoming. I would recommend that you share your thoughts on his work with him, he genuinely enjoys conversing with fans. He also usually responds (though this summer they have been a bit delayed). Again, an excellent and thoughtful video. Thank you for the time and effort you put into it, that is very much appreciated. From Detroit.. take care.

"We didn't have any of that" (Resurrections) I always challenge this when I hear it. Before I go on allow me to first say thank you for your wonderful videos. Now… I have been reading comics since the sixties, and I believe “resurrection” was not uncommon in the comics, though it was most often the villains who’d “come back.” But sometimes it was also the heroes who some how came back. (Or never really left.) I remember in the early late 70’s / 80’s I was part of a group who played a game called “Villains & Vigilantes,” (first published 1979,) which contained “Rule 3.1” which we often joked about. It basically said, if a character dies, after the game he could come back if you could find any sort of explanation. So even then it was already a thing. (I proudly note that from that group, two went on to work at Marvel Comics, one worked at ILM, as does his son now, and one even became Johnny Cash! (Oh… and “The Last Starfighter” too.) Again thank you, and please keep up the awesome observations.
