Please note that this is the international version of Super Mario Bros. 2, a modification of the game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (夢工場 ドキドキパニック) released on Famicom Disk System in 1987. The original japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was later released renamed as Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels.
Unfortunately we haven't been able to include Satellaview version of this game due to the impossibility to get the original audio tracks. This version was based on Super Mario All-Stars released in Super Nintendo.

After learning about the history and circumstances about the game creation , I consider Doki Doki Panic a Mario game in development and released early for a special event/holiday. It had all the mario designers, composers, etc. So technically not released as a Mario game originally, I get the impression that it was always supposed to be.

Of course, there are some differences here & there to make the game easier to people outside Japan.

  • @duffman18

@@load-bearingcoconut5586 yep exactly. The game was originally a mario game. It was supposed to be a mario game, and it was developed by the same dev team who made SMB 1, SMB 3, SMW, and SMW 2. Then they converted it into Doki Doki Panic. And then they converted it BACK into a mario game. But it was always supposed to be a mario game, one that focused much more on verticle scrolling as opposed to horizontal scrolling. And it worked. But yeah. It started off as a mario game, developed by the Mario dev team, and it was very briefly Doki Doki panic before ending up as a mario game, as always intended. The Gaming Historian has a great video about it.

From the beginning, Yumi Kojo: Doki Doki Panic was designed to be "a new Mario game" even though it wasn't intended to be an actual Mario game. When the original SMB2 was play-tested in America, it was considered to be too difficult, too graphically similar to SMB, and it would have to be converted to cartridge format from the disk system format. Nintendo decided to modify Doki Doki Panic to a Mario game, as again, development of DFDDP was with the mindset of making it a new type of Super Mario game. Nintendo could do this, because aside from the Fuji TV characters, the entire game was Nintendo's creation. You might want to look up some videos by GTV on the topic. The original Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic was created as a collaboration between Nintendo, and Fuji TV for a festival in Japan, for the purpose of getting youth of that time interested in technology, knowing that youth would grow up to be the adults of today.

In Doki Doki Panic, the characters were mascots of Fuji TV’s Summer 1987 Dream Factory event. Luigi jumps higher than Imajin’s Mama. Wart (Mamuu) has a time and a half as much health in Super Mario Bros. 2 as he would in Doki Doki Panic. According to Doki Doki Panic’s instruction manual, the reason why World 7 has only two stages, as opposed to the usual three, is that the twins Piki and Poki accidentally ripped the story’s ending out of the book as they had a fight over who gets to turn the page.

There were some other significant changes. For one, the plot between the two games is completely different even though the villains are the same. In SMB2, meanwhile, you fight Mouser once less since he's replaced by Clawgrip in World 5-3, and you don't need to beat every level with all four characters to see the game's ending. I think SMB2 got some bug fixes, as well, and other small tweaks, although its translation in the end cast list was botched until the GBA release.

And the additional whistling in the lose a life theme, similar to the SMB1 one. Note that Doki Doki Panic had the DCPM, which might be reminiscent. Nintendo is the weirdest company when it comes to enhanced home console ports on portable consoles. It’s cool seeing extra content in a new port, but it sucks that it comes with drawbacks of the console like screen crunch and downgraded audio. Interestingly a lot of people have the premise of SMB2 completely the wrong way round. A lot of sources say we got the Doki Doki Panic port because Lost Levels was deemed too hard or similar to SMB1 for Western players, but it actually turns out DDP was designed to be SMB2 the whole time. It was just deemed to be too experimental to change the formula so much in the Japanese market. There are a lot of Mario elements in the Japanese DDP which indicate this. The Mario Bros power stars and the coin sounds from SMB1. You could also cite the POW block as well but I think this was it's first appearance outside of the arcade

Yeah, exactly.

If you could just get the resolution, colors, and audio from the Super Nintendo version, but combine it with all the extras from the GBA version, then reduce the occurrence of voices by about 50% - I think you'd have the ideal version of this game.

Thanks to this wise decisión to turn DDP in SMB2 (or SMBUSA), we got the grabbing Mechanics, Luigi’s skill to run slower but jump higher (this is also true in the original SMB2 or SMBTLL), Peach floaty jump, and a lot of her moveset references this game. Also we have the Bob-Ombs, Shy Guys, Snifits, Pokeys, Birdo, Phanto (as the sun in SMB3), sparky as Mario characters. BTW in my opinion SMB2>>>SMBTLL.

@@comancess4639 Lost Levels, as Western audiences call it, was the sequel to Super Mario Bros, but it was basically more of the same with insane difficulty. Afraid that the world outside Japan would be confised by the similarities and hate it because of the difficulty they were looking for a substitute. Nintendo already made Doki Doki Panic and realised how similar it is to a Mario game, and there was no time to make another SMB2 from scratch. So they changed assets to make it the "sequel" for the rest of the world.
