The option for the DX rom hack to have the ORIGINAL Mario sprite totally changes my opinion of it. The larger more detailed sprite totally ruined the character of the game given the seeming intention of the rom was to represent what the game would have looked like on Game Boy Color, and Nintendo never "updated" the graphics when they released their GBC rereleases of GB games. Its just great to have the option, shows they really were thinking on this for a while.

The problem with new mode on game boy color is only the characters are altered. They look out of place in the environments, with only Daisy being a notable improvement that still matches. Old mode with color seems to add polish, completing the original aesthetic. The DS variant has less disparity by comparison, so it holds up better as a whole.

  • @VOAN

Technically then reason why Nintendo does that in the first place was that the Super NES was not backwards compatible with NES games so those who bought the Super NES back then thinking it will be able to play the just released Super Mario Bros. 3 were disappointed that some wrote complaints to Nintendo threatening to throw away their Super NES in the process. Nintendo in a scramble at first was planning to make an adapter for Super NES that could play NES games but the head of development says making such an adapter would be pointless since the NES is on its way out. Instead Nintendo choose to just remake all four of the 8-Bit Super Mario Bros. games for Super NES as those are the only thing the complaints were about so that's how they released Super Mario All-Stars for Super NES.

You can tell the original Gameboy version was steering on the side of having as much screen size as possible, at the expense of graphical fidelity. It's less detailed than the NES original, actually looks more like a game you'd find on an old graphing calculator.
