How Many Ports of Super Mario Bros. (1985) Exist? - Super Mario Bros. Release History

Ойын-сауық

There are few video games as well known and beloved as Super Mario Bros. Not only did it change the history of video games forever, it spawned the entire Super Mario franchise that is still going strong to this day. As one of the most popular and important games of all time, it's also one of the most rereleased. Since its release in 1985, the game has been available on countless devices, officially and unofficially. Today, we'll be taking a look at them!
Super Mario Bros. has been released and remade no fewer than 30 times including releases for the NES, the Famicom Disk System, PCs, the GameBoy Color/Advance, the Wii, and more! It's also seen various retoolings such as one based off of a Japanese radio show and some arcade editions as well! Along with that, there are even many bootleg and unlicensed ports of the game, such as Sonic Jam 6 for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive! If any of this sounds interesting, learn all about those and more rereleases of Super Mario Bros. in this video!
If you enjoyed this video, be sure to subscribe and check out my other videos! Thank you very much for watching and I hope you enjoyed!

I will never forget my mom's description of the game to a toystore clerk. When I turned 6 I got the game for my birthday, but because my mother didn't trust herself to get the right game, she took me to the store and check what to buy. Neither of us knew the game's title because she didn't know anything about games and I couldn't read yet. So my mom asked if they have the "jumpy guy's game" and the clerk immediately knowing what we meant. I don't know why, but it's one of those random memories that stuck. ^^'

Anyone heard of Super Luigi Brothers? Evidently it somewhere that one exists I played it once on something probably Windows weird consoles that are sold at Christmas. Curtis Ward that one also had the Atari version of Mario Brothers not super of course. Oh and yeah there was a bootleg for the Atari as well that was actually on the cartridge cease and desist of course was Nintendo's response. However speaking of Atari. Atari had at one time released versions of their 2600 games. For IBM PC and XT not sure if it was both but I think it was. Also I don't know what version it was but I know it was not Super Mario Brothers special for sure. Had this before I actually got the Nintendo! But it was a IBM doors version of Super Mario Brothers. It was fairly faithful to the original Super Mario Bros. It was played by a keyboard though! Think I got it for either Christmas or birthday 1 year??? But don't remember the title but it looks nothing like Super Mario special which I have played before somewhere somehow. Don't know if it wasn't official release or not but from what I've heard from others there was a Dos Port of the game. Again I don't know if Listen official one or not but possibly???? Also interesting enough there is something interesting in Windows I don't know if this is some sort of add-on or what or Easter egg I can't remember long time! It wasn't really a game say but you could be Mario and jumping around your desktop screen in Windows don't remember which version of Windows it was. 3.1 or later??? There were a few questions boxes and sausage or variant of. With the Vine that's the one I really remember! Also there was one of those self-contained plug-and-play systems I had once. There was actually a version of Super Mario Bros on there. Seem like combination of different versions mainly Super Mario Brothers 2 Super Mario Bros 1 and one more plus some parts that were never in a Mario Brothers game. Also there is a few enemies that were not in Mario Brothers games. But look very very close to Pokemon at least a few of them! Has anyone ever heard about the telenet Star Wars movie in ASCII characters thought I threw out that

My dad played the heck out of the Play Choice 10 version of Super Mario Bros. He once got through 6 playthroughs of the game on a single quarter, using all of the Warp Zones to speed run it. He was also the second person to send in a 1 million point high score to Nintendo Power, but there was only 1 prize for the first person.

@DoggoCatto Yes, in the written form, it can be abbreviated that way. But I had never known it to be verbalised in the shortened form, and certainly not in terms of Mario games. As another example, one doesn't pronounce 'Mr.' as it is written. It is still 'mister'.

Note that the GBA version was actually slightly modified due to differences in the aspect ratio of the GBA and NES; Mario's sprite (and maybe some others) was actually redrawn to make it fit better, which might make it seem off if you're really familiar with the original. Nintendrew had a video all about the GBA-NES ports, I would recommend looking at that for the specifics.

SMB came out 6/14/86, SMB2J came out 6/3/86) Sorry for having to be the nitpicky guy, great video, and I love this style, because it's nice to just watch in general. Much love, keep going man!

It's much more likely that they just codeveloped the games. They came out at pretty much exactly the same time as you said, and was therefore very likely developed at the same time. Therefore they didn't take any levels from the other game, they designed both games to share the same levels.

IIRC it wasn't really that they were more powerful, but that they had hardware specialized for games that weren't really found in home computers. In terms of raw CPU power, AFAIK home computers were king but that didn't mean much due to having to do everything in software; slowing everything down. The Amiga actually had hardware designed for games to take advantage of, and that computer was where computer gaming was *at* until IBM-compatibles caught up.

One of my favorite Mario ports is "Super Mario Bros. 64", not for the Nintendo 64, but the Commodore 64. Due to the similar hardware capabilities between the NES and Commodore 64, Super Mario Bros runs quite well on the system, and even better on the Commodore 128 since it has a 2MHz CPU mode (the NES CPU, a Japanese clone of the 6502 processor equipped to the Commodore 64/128, runs at 1.79MHz). If you can actually find the port after Nintendo tried to C&D it out of existence, it's a fun experience.

Interesting side note to the Duck Hunt/SMB cart bundled.with the Action Set... in the UK at least is that it was slightly sped up when compared to earlier stand alone carts. Because it was faster it always felt more fluid and personally always found the game easier to finish using the DH/SMB version, especially once at world 8. By the early 90's the stand alone carts were also the faster version too.

Ah, the part where you discuss Vs. Super Mario Bros. brings back memories for me. There is this brewery/pizza place my family sometimes goes to in San Clemente, and they have a tiny arcade there. It's mostly unremarkable stuff, but as late as 2013/2014, they had a Vs. Super Mario Bros. cabinet there, and I remember playing it years ago. Sadly, it must've broken at some point, because I recently found out they replaced it with a tabletop Pac-Man machine. Fairly interesting, but it's still no Vs. Super Mario Bros. :-(

I have the Sharp X1 version of Super Mario Bros Special (technically I have the other version as well but I don't play it because it's not very good), and I've played through it several times. There's actually quite a bit of creativity within the level design. I enjoy it.

Super Mario Bros Deluxe was my very first exposure to the original Super Mario Bros. It was actually mom's game I think but I played it almost as much as she did.

24:47 “…now try again” killed me. Btw, 25:58, if you’re curious, the first game says: “mario 3 around the world”, the game on the right says: “mario 4 space odyssey”, and both box arts have “Russian version” written at the bottom
