    That clip of young vernon talking about being ‘different’ always makes me emotional, i feel like the feeling of not being completely American and fully Korean always had it’s impact on him growing up, and his mixtape Lizzie Velasquez explains everything that he’s gone through feeling like a foreigner in a country that doesn’t feel foreign for him. That mixtape was created 6 years ago and I wonder if he still feels the same way right now.

    To answer some questions: 1. Korean age can either be one or two years older than int age depending on what time of the year you're born. In kr age you're automatically 1 when you're born because they count the 9 months spent in the womb and round it up into one year. And then at New Years everyone collectively turned a year older. You don't add a year to your age on your birthday, but instead on Jan 1st. So if you're born just a little BEFORE new years, your kr age will be 2 years more than int age because soon after you're born you turn 2. Meanwhile if you're born in the beginning of the year AFTER new years, your kr age will only be 1 yr older than your int age because you need to wait for the next new years. With this rule it's entirely possible to have the same kr age as someone internationally 1 year younger/older than you. 2. The "w" in korean isn't silent. It's only silent on "woo", specifically. This is because "woo" doesn't work in hangul. When they make any other "w" vowels, in hangul it's written like: ㅘ "o-a" (wa) ㅟ "u-i" (wi) ㅝ "u-eo" (wo) ㅚ "o-i" (weh---this is why "choi" is pronounced "chwe". So yes, Vernon's family name is choi if written using Korean-English romanization rules) ㅙ "o-ae" (wae) ㅞ "u-e" (weh--pronounced pretty much identical to "wae". Usually this "e" is used for foreign loanwords) Since they derive the "w" sound from either "o" or "u" and combine it with other vowels, then "woo" is automatically just ㅜ "u" in itself. So why did they write it "woo" in romanization? Idk :v. It's probably so english speakers won't mistake it with english "u" pronounciation :v

  • @itspribanerjee

    Great explanation. I did understand a bit better about the birthday thing but I’d definitely get confused again haha. And I agree with the Wonwoo part. In korean it’s 원우 and 우 is just “u” since ㅇ is a silent consonant. So if we would write 구 which is ㄱ(g) + ㅜ(u) it becomes “Gu”. I guess they wrote “woo” so it’s not confused with English pronunciation of U as you said.

    The korean age system works like when a Korean baby is born, he or she is already one year old. When the New Year strikes, on January 1st, every Korean turns one year older. But the korean age system will be abolished so koreans will be using their intl age

    The reason of the cat problems is probably because she had an abundance of energy, you can try to play more with her after meals at night make her run around, so she can burn her energy and not wake u up at 3 am, make sure she's tired and make it a routine. P.s: But im not a expert, so i might be wrong

  • @tomuchcamoflauge

    @tomuchcamoflauge

    A routine always helps. Another factor potentially is the cat being lonely at night which could be helped with her sleeping more through the night from a good play routine, but could also be helped by getting a second cat. The second cat option is if it's financially, physically, and mentally a good choice for the situation though

    To explain Wonwoo's name (원우): There is no set 'w' letter/sound in Korean. What you hear as that first 'w' is the combination of 'oo' and 'eo' (ㅜ ㅓ) that comes together to make that first 'won'. But the second 'w' in his name is just 'oo' (우). So that's why some people will instead choose to write his name as 'wonu' or something so people stop adding a second 'w' sound. Unless you can read hangul or are familiar with Korean sounds already, I admit it's difficult to tell the proper pronunciation with just romanization, which is why it's highly criticized to be accurate for Korean. To explain "Choi" (최): When you break apart the letters in the word, it is in fact read as 'ch', 'oh', 'ee', so it's common to assume that all together it sounds like 'choy'. However, that is not the case. It actually sounds more like 'chwe' (the 'e' pronounced as in 'meh'). Why? Idk, languages change over time and all rules have exceptions. But most Koreans will still write their name as "choi" because it looks easier to pronounce that 'chwe' and it's just become standard at this point.

    you can still pronounce it as how it is spelled like choi and wonwoo. however, the examples are just how native koreans and how they actually pronounce names. they're ethnic names so it's complicated, so as to not butcher them, just say it however it is spelled in english.

"WON" it is pronounced as it is spelled Whean a w is followed by a double u, the romanization became "wu" and pronounces as "u" So it is Wonu

    It’s really just the way it’s romanized that’s confusing. Basically, in Korean there’s the vowels a, e, ae, i, o, u, eu, ui ya, ye, yae, yo, yu, wa, we, wae, wi, wo. all of which have different characters. In the romanizations 우 is shown as woo but technically it’s “u”. For won-woo (원우) it would make more sense to romanize it as wonu since it has the vowel wo in the first character and the vowel u in the second character. Woo is basically the only time the w is silent (that I can think of) In Korean the letter ㅇ, when placed in the beginning of a character is actually a place holder for consonants. For example won (원) versus kwon (권): Here the character “won” doesn’t have a beginning consonant sound (“wo” is a vowel in Korean) as opposed to “kwon” which has the k. The character would look weird if they didn’t put a consonant so they put the character ㅇ as a place holder. When it’s in the middle of a word the ending consonant of the previous character carries over. For 원우 (technically won woo) it’s actually pronounced wo nu with the n from the first character carrying over to the next. Other examples: chan-yeol (찬열) is more naturally pronounced as Cha-nyeol; eun-woo (은우) is more naturally pronounced as eu-nu.

    If your cat is neutered, maybe it just wants to play at night. Make sure to play with it in the afternoon so they run out of energy. Also have a schedule in their meals. If they always have access to food, they have constant source of energy. If it’s not neutered, maybe it is looking for a mate. Mating season is usually when it’s summer and it’s really hot. Neuter asap if you don’t plan to have kittens. But I’ve read that neutering while in heat is dangerous so do it after. Unneutered cats also have the tendency to be very territorial and pee in not appropriate places. Edit: And also you have to check out the reality show they did in their predebut. I remembered in your last video you mentioned that. You should definitely check that out.

    Wonwoo's name is not an exception or "picking and choosing" because whoever told you that about that "W-O" thing was just wrong. That doesn't just apply to any "WO" combination because it depends on the actual Korean spelling. And take into account that English spellings are not always consistent to Korean spelling and there may be English letters used as placeholders in words (Idk why), which is why it seems like there's random exceptions everywhere. But the actual Korean is more consistent. A better explanation of to pronounce his name is... because the Korean character ㅇ is used before voweld, which Wonwoo's name starts with, and doesn't really have a sound of it's own *in that case.* (It can also be used as the "ng" sound but that is at the end of words and doesn't depend on vowels.) Anyway, certain vowels can combine to make different sounds. For example, the vowels ㅜ ("oo") and ㅓ ("eo") combine to make "ㅝ" "woh". But it's not correct to write/type vowels that way, the character ㅇ needs to be with them even though it doesn't technically have a sound in this case. So it's 워. And in the case of "Won" in Wonwoo, 원. You DO say W sound in that syllable, because that is the soun those vowels make when combined. And in terms of "Woo", it also contains "ㅇ" but again it doesn't have a sound of it's own, it's just there because there's a vowel ("oo" sound). In "woo" you DON'T really say the W sound, because there actually isn't one; there are no combined vowels of any kind (eg. ㅝ, ㅚ, ㅙ or ㅟ) and without some kind of combination there cant really be any W sound at the start of a word. In Korean the pronunciation of "Woo" is actuallu just "oo" because it is simply "우". So I guess spelling it like "Wonwoo" is perhaps misleading, because it's more like Wonu ("Won-oo"). There is no W sound in the second syllable because there's no combined vowels needed to make a "w" sound, but there is in the first syllable. So Wonu/"Won-oo". Hope this helps!
