Super-Cooled Water Heats Up to Make Ice? DIY Super-Cooled Water Tricks

Ойын-сауық

In this video I show you how to instantly turn water into ice by super-cooling water. With super-cooled water you can instantly freeze water with the strike of your hand, you can even pour ice! I then show you how super-cooled water heats up when it pours ice. This is a really neat experiment showing that freezing is actually exothermic!

    is that why when your in a pool and then get into a hot tub you get that almost cold burning sensation from the temperature change or is it just a rapid difference in temperature?

  • @alex_marie1324

    that's a sudden change in temperature thing. The human body is a terrible thermometer. If you were to run your hand under cold water and dip it into warm (almost hot) water, the water would hotter than it actually is, and the same would work in reverse.

    Nathanial Bogdonas - Another point of view: Most people think that the pool water cools your body... However, your body is actually warming the water (exo-thermic). In other words, the water pulls the heat from your body thus making it feel cooler.

Then I touched the water with my hand and I felt like it wasn't even hot at all, it was cold... So it all depends on the temperature of ur body

    +The Action Lab It always got me that when people do this, it seems like the whole bottle really is freezing. But that's impossible because even at the minimum temperature for supercooled water (which I think is -40 degrees) the heat release from freezing should only allow about half of the water to freeze. Or am I getting something wrong there??

  • @TheActionLab

    @TheActionLab

    7 жыл бұрын

    +DANG JOS that sounds about right, it definitely doesn't all freeze. The crystals are dispersed throughout the whole bottle but there is liquid water mixed between so it is a slush/slurry.

    Why half?

  • @DANGJOS

    @DANGJOS

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@tsunghan_yu Because water freezing releases a huge amount of heat from the water molecules bonding together. The amount is equivalent to warming water from 0 to 80 degrees Celsius. So freezing water from -40 to 0 should only freeze about half of it. I'm not sure that the minimum is actually -40 though. I forgot the actual number.

    Doesn't the same principle apply when condensation occurs? Water droplets need a "seed" to form on, once they do they release heat. When this happens in a cloud it can create a chain reaction causing the warmed vapor to rise, cooling down as it rises, and can create a huge cumulonimbus rain cloud.

    so a more simpler explanation to his energy thing on the water temp heating up to freeze is right here: For instance putting your hand on ice takes a little bit before it starts hurting while putting your hand in cold water hurts much faster. and thats why the temperature was going down because it went from instant pain to slow pain.

Or maybe larger Sugar crystal? idk!) into the supercooled water. Idk... I guess I'm kinda thinkin of my old chem class when we made super saturated solutions then made them precipitate back out by putting some of the dry substance in to it

    Thinking out loud here. If its exothermic, it means it's releasing heat, so the system itself is losing heat. The thermometer therefore measures the increase in temperature from the heat expelled by the molecules while the molecules themselves are decreasing in temperature? Or does this not matter because the thermometer is submerged in the water and thus becomes a part of the system?

  • @LaserTractor

    @LaserTractor

    I know it's two years but lol. Ice requires heat (energy from outside) to melt, right? Ok. This is endothermic reaction. System takes heat away from surroundings. So in turn the process of water turning into ice releases heat. It sounds stupid, but we never experience this in real life, so it's hard to imagine. The only places where we see ice are freezer (where it's always cold due to automatics) or outside in the winter where it's cold. And also even if we took our time to see water turning into ice - we probably wouldn't tell the difference between -15°C water and -6°C ice
