    Great video. You address a lot of the initial questions most people have, especially comparing the 300 HAM'R to 300 Whisper, which have completely different applications. "But you would really, REALLY have to love your kid..." had me laughing. Cue the Wilson haters. I always say "Just because you can't afford it doesn't mean it's over priced." Wilson's has been around for over 40 years. They must be doing something right. I don't think buying 300 HAM'R will be a problem for years to come. "

    I always wondered, why not take advantage of full case capacity of 5.56 and just expand the neck to 30 cal. I don't care about subsonic velocities, I want to shoot super sonic light bullets really fast! Well Wilson had same idea in mind and they delivered it.

    Thoughts on this $3,000 platform vs an $800 AR chambered in 7.62x39? The ballistics on the 7.62x39 are basically the same as the .300 HAM'R 125gr load, and close to all the others. Aside from having many, many more projectiles available in .308, what do people think? I am asking honestly in terms of relative accuracy, weight, effective range, etc... When I first looked at the .300 HAM'R ballistics today it struck me as fairly close to 7.62x39.

  • @TWANGnBANG

    @TWANGnBANG

    6 жыл бұрын

    123gr 7.62x39 is about 250fps slower than 125gr 300 HAM'R with a comparably reduction in KE, nobody makes match grade ammo for it, you need a weaker bolt to shoot it, and capacity is limited.

    @Chris Machaj much flatter trajectory, much more retained energy, and a proper twist for stability in flight leads to tremendously better accuracy and terminal performance at all ranges, making it a better hunting and defensive round than the .300 blackout. Literally this is the round I've been waiting for. The blackout killer, and to think I almost settled

    I see now on the W.C. website link for .300 HAM'R they show a comparison of a couple 7.62x39 loads, and the HAM'R is around 250 fps and 300 M.E. over the AK loads they list (Hornady SST & Winchester Razorback). I was thinking in terms of ammo like the Hornady SST, the Nosler Varmageddon, the Federal Fusion, - those are all 2350 fps and around 1510 M.E..

    I am adding this cartridge to my AR collection. If you really compare the ballistics, this is superior to the blackout and the 7.62x39. I have used the blackout, and in supersonic loads it comes up short. The 7.62x39 has its own set of problems and limitations. If you like either of these two, great! Shoot them. But an honest look at the Ham'r proves it is better in all respects as a mid-range medium game hunting cartridge. No its not designed for subsonic people plinking or 1000 yd moose smashing. It was designed to give 30-30 ballistics out of a AR 15 platform. I say great job Wilson! I have a match grade barrel on the way at a very reasonable price.

  • @rohawaha
    @rohawaha5 жыл бұрын

    Well ! This accuracy may or May Not be inherent to the .300 Ham'r cartridge ! because I own 4 Wilson Combat barrels and they all shoot sub MOA all day long . two of them in 5.56 and two in 7.62 x 40 WT.

    @@TWANGnBANG well. If no one picks up on it and you only sell $3000+ rifles or $1500 uppers that chamber it good luck. The market is small for that combination. Also I love the high margin you reference. Wilson are grossly overpriced for what they are. And yes I have shot a few Wilson guns and they are nice but the build quality is not 2-3x times better or 2-3x more accurate than offerings from their competition. You are paying for the name more than anything else. Or for a non firearms analogy. Sony created betamax and kept it proprietary and no one remembers it. Jvc licensed vhs and it took off. Same applies here. If Bill Wilson wants to keep his cartridge for WC products only thing that's fine but don't be surprised when it is forgotten to history like the Betamax.

    You'll like it. There is a lot of good information on 300 blktalk. One think to be aware of is that feed ramps are not really standardized brand to brand, and most are standard M4 which is not really very good for a lot of the bullet profiles you will use. It's often worthwhile to blunt the corners, and widen the channels a little. It's a shame that otherwise excellent barrels come with this rather obvious flaw, but it isn't too hard to remedy. If you go on right to bear arms . com or whatever that site is, there are usually really good deals on faxxon and ballistic advantage barrels that I haven't seen matched elsewhere. Vanilla Rem ammo is a good performer, and if you are handloading, brass prep and expander ball tweaking seems to be a bigger deal. Also most of the loads are inconsistent until compressed, but even then are well below max pressures.

    I have blackout and I still got a 300 HAMR. While they look similar they serve different roles. Blackout is very conservative on powder, so if you want the cheapest rifle round to shoot, blackout is the way to go. HAMR on the other hand is great for barrels 18" or higher. So consequentially blackout is ideal for SBRs and HAMR for full length rifles. This isn't so say blackout isn't great in a full length rifle, only that unless you need to save powder, HAMR will have higher performance.

    I quite frankly think that 300 HAM'R has a lot of potential in not just hunting and sport applications but in military applications. Hits harder than 6.8 spc, 7.62x39 or 300 blackout and you can carry just as much ammo as a 5.56. Does it weigh more? Yeah just a wee bit, but honestly, the weight is negligible simply because of the power these rounds.

  • @skylined12
    @skylined126 жыл бұрын

    Nice shooting! So is this the 7.62x40wt or not? I know the 7.62x40wt was wilsons original take on the 7.62x40 wildcat and made all the claims the 300 HAM'R is making although originally released as an early competitor to the 300 blk in its infancy (think it was introduced in 2011). Not debating its place in the market or its performance, just wondering if this is a rebranding and new marketing campaign (don't know why everybody is calling it "new" if it is) or is this actually a new cartridge? Can I use original 7.62x40wt dies with 300 HAM'R? All questions aside I LOVE Wilson Combat (my old, 2005ish, UT-15 in Armor Tuff OD green, is still my favorite AR and the armor tuff coating has held up great) and that is one beautiful rifle!

    x40 is the wildcat, hamr is the SAAMI approved cartridge. HAMR is 1mm longer than x40 so you can't shoot HAMR in a x40 barrel, but you can use x40 dies to load HAMR. However LEE makes HAMR dies for like $40 so it is actually cheaper to use HAMR dies than x40 dies.

    It's an answer to a question that has already been answered. Their website stuck with comparison to the 300blk and 7.62x39 for a reason. Both 6.8spc and 6.5 grendel outperform those cartridges and only fall slightly below the 300 ham'rs numbers (trusting posted ballistic data, vs chrono testing in the wild) in one specific area, the amount it will cost you. The 300 ham'r holds a wide margin above the rest in price. It's like buying a 280 rem. instead of a 270 win. (if 280 rifles and ammo were manufactured by just one company) The only difference that's not minimal will be the cost. Not saying it won't be slightly better, but is that little bit of extra juice really worth the sqeeze?

    And let's not ignore the big bore ARs (Ruger American in 450 Bushmaster was initially for states only allowing straight walled cartridges in certain areas, but became popular for hogs). All three, 450 Bushmaster, 458 socom, and 50 Beowulf offer substantially more energy inside 200yds while maintaining acceptable accuracy. Though these will be at an increased cost, they still remain below that of the 300 ham'r.

    As I mentioned more than once, the goal was to offer the most kinetic energy from a 30 caliber bullet using a 556 case and a standard bolt. These cost so much because they’re Wilson Combat rifles. Other manufacturers could make them for less cost than making a 6.8SPC or 6.5GREN because they’d need no special bolt or BCG to run.

    I’ve scrolled through all the comments and trying to find out the twist on that barrel. It must be a 1- 13 or a 1-15 twist. I just purchased the same gun and with the 18 inch barrel it only comes in a 1-13 twist. There seems to of been a change with the Wilson philosophy during Covid. I can understand the 13 twist for the maybe 130 grain to 150 grain, and probably the 15 Twist for the 90 to 130 grain. I’m assuming your rifle is the 1-15 twist? I would really like to know as I’m trying to figure out which bullets to purchase. Thank you, Also in Scrolling through the comments I gathered that either you or someone in your family was in an accident. Truly sorry for that I hope everyone came out all right

    This reply might be a little late, but if I remember correctly, the 1-15 twist barrel will stabilize 150gr bullets in most conditions. However, at cold temperatures (meaning low density altitude) the 1-15 twist may not stabilize the heavier bullets. I don't think you are going to over stabilize the lighter bullets too much. I would try each one out and see what groups best. Better yet, just give WC a call, they would know better than anyone.

    Golden tiger 7.62x39 124 grain is only 100 FPS lower than the loading for this. I don’t see why you can’t just load an ar15in 300 blackout to these velocities. Also, if you want a stronger bolt face why not just make a 3 or 2 lug bold design for the ar15?

    Round wise it's about $20 for 20 rounds from Wilson. Which is a bargain, considering what big companies charge you for some hunting rounds. As far as components, if your buying Wilson, all his rifles are around $2,000+. You could also just buy a barrel. Saves loads right there.

    Been looking at the 40wt and throwing around the idea of trying one out. Few questions about this cartridge. How are they getting that extra velocity over 7.62x39? 7.62x39 is 35.5 grains, 223 is at 28.8, 300 blackout is 24-25. I'm guessing they are running these at max pressures (which is higher for 5.56 than 7.62x39) and have maybe have 28-32 grains of case capacity, with a short stubby bullet that doesn't eat up much of said capacity? Any information on what kind of bullets can be used? This seems like a cartridge that will need special projectiles that have a very short stubby ogive. Otherwise you won't be .308 at the mouth of the case. Guessing standard 150 grain hornady fmj will be a no go? (just checked and they might barely work but only if crimped above the cannelure, the 168 grain otm speer bullets are no good). Lastly, does this use a standard upper? And if so, can barrels be purchased separate? Other similar things on the market I've looked at are 30 HRT based off of the 6.8 case and the 30 ARX based off of the 6.5 Grendel. All three are going to need special mags and brass. Idk, I'll wait and see how this does and go from there.

    Unfortunately, KZread will no longer allow us to link to websites where you can buy a firearm even if the link isn’t to a firearm. If you go to Wilson Combat’s website, click on the 300 HAM’R image right front and center. You’ll then see an option for “Load Data” that will answer a lot of your questions. It does use a standard upper and BCG straight from a 5.56. They already have barrels available and in stock in their store. You’d just need to get 300 BLK mags and the barrel to build a 300 HAM’R AR15.
