Well, I'm a little late to the party, but better late than never. I just bought a 300 HAM'R barrel and converted my 300 blkout to HAM'R. I reload and are having a blast shooting 0.5" groups at 100 yards. I absolutely love this cartridge. I really hope it gets more and more popular. Bill Wilson did a phenomenal job!!!!!

For a while I've been considering how best to get into the AR rifle game with all-purpose rifle (recreational target shooting, deer hunting , home defense), with budget of primary importance. Have looked at ARs in 7.62x39, 300BO, 6.5 Grendel, and now this 300 HAMR. Which is best to start with in the current market? (I'm obviously not a hand loader, so limited to commercially available ammo.) (in the meantime I also intend to have a traditional Marlin 336...)

If 300blk didn't already exist this would take off for sure. The truth is most people don't understand ballistics so they won't SEE the improvements as being significant and feel it worth the price increase over 300blk that I'm sure will be there. I understand it, but most people won't. This is what 300blk SHOULD have been.

Does it do the subsonic stuff as well? Because that was the whole purpose of the 300blk

  • @gowilsoncombat

    @gowilsoncombat

No, it is not compatible with subsonic applications. The goal was to maximize terminal ballistic performance by not making some of the same sacrifices as the 300blk, while still running in a standard 5.56 AR-15 platform.

Too many Bozos want to pretend they are assassins and shoot suppressed. I have absolutely no interest in the 300 AAC. For me I want terminal ballistics and am truly excited about the development of this new round. My AR .223 Wylde has an Adams Gas Piston System that definitely needs a barrel swap to 300 HAM'R. Eventually I will build another dedicated upper for the .223 Wylde. Having ammo choices is prudent. Who knows perhaps I will just build 300 HAM'R uppers with different barrel lengths for different purposes here on the farm and sell the .223 Wylde barrel. After all I do have 4 30-30 win. rifles. My Savage 99 and Rem.788 shoot "pointy" bullets that prove the 30-30 to be an excellent shooter out to 350 yards. I might just give up my 30-30s and stick with the AR platform.

Great round but as you mentioned 300 blackout was created to shoot suppressed and therefore it’s not a competitor. Do I want it, hell yes. Can I justify the cost? No. If I need the extra velocity, which is rare; I’m grabbing my LMT AR10 but when it comes to hog hunting I’ll grab my MCX 300 blackout. For an all purpose rifle nothing comes close to my MCX in my opinion. Allows for 5.56, 300 blackout and it’s host to my Gemtech One. Great for my ear safety, plenty of velocity if necessary and much lighter than my DD 5.56 or LMT .308. Now would I consider purchasing a 300 HAM’R barrel for the MCX? Hell yes.

It makes sense to save and convert 5.56 brass to 300 hmr brass. I imagine Hornady will soon offer a die set for new cartridge to make the conversion and resizing a breeze. The 300aac no doubt shines in subsonic but for terminal performance/one and done hunting, the 300 hmr more than makes up for what the blackout lacks. Thank u for the video

  • @The10thManRules

300 HAM'R brass is easier to make than 300 Blackout. The chopsaw step is totally eliminated. Just lubricate, resize, and trim to 1.595. Also, 300H isn't finicky about what brass manufacturer to use like 300B due to the new neck thickness being thicker because 300B's neck is in the body of a 223/5.56 brass. 300H neck is the neck/shoulder of 223/5.56 brass. I really enjoy making and shooting 300H. It totally maximizes the AR15/5.56 bolt/30 round mag platform with a 30 caliber projectile.

Got my answer... My next build will be with the 300 Ham'r! What barrel length did those velocities and target groups come out of? Is there an optimal barrel length the bullet was design for / work best with? Thanks for keeping our 2A lives fun and accurate!

Same here on wanting something more powerful than 7.62x39 and 300BO . Was actually upset that the reason they shortened the case for the 300 BO was for making it quiet : I mean I do like quietness but I don't want to sacrifice power . Actually looked into making a 6.66mm bullet and putting it in a 223 rem case but then I heard about this . Although , currently looking at rifles in 223 , 30-06 , and 300WM so I'll , definitely , have to research my options a little more .

I just converted a Daniel Defense DD4 V7 556 to a Ham'r. I used a 15 inch twist barrel, 16" long with your adjustable gas block because am running it suppressed. I bought 2 hundred loaded rounds of the 130 Hot Core, loading dies, CFEBLK powder, 200 rounds of the shiny (nickle) brass and 500 rounds of the 130 Hot Core Bullets. Printed your loading Data so I think I'm all set. Hoping I get groups like you do and I can't wait to try it on one of (a bunch of) our Texas feral hogs. Very nice video even if it is 4 years old. Now I think I need a Wilson Combat 338 Federal. I have 20 rounds of ammo but no rifle lol.

The 300 HAM'R case is .040" longer, the shoulder is .040" further forward than the 7.62x40WT and the lead/throat is .040" longer. This results in a 1.5-2.2 grain powder capacity increase depending on bullet shape and prevents the 300 HAM'R from chambering in a 7.62x40 for safety reasons. The 300 HAM'R has a velocity gain of 75-125fps over the 7.62x40 depending on the bullet used. Largest velocity and performance gains are with the Sierra 125gr SBT PH, Speer 130gr FNHC and all 150gr bullets. Due to the twist change from 1-12 of the 7.62x40WT to 1-15 in the 300 HAM'R and CFEBLK powder overall the 300 HAM'R is more accurate than the 7.62x40WT.

You could quite frankly call it the new 30 carbine, the most mass produced rifle of WWII. It outdoes just about anything else without loss of round capacity in the rifle now it just needs to be more mass produced. The 35 Whelen is the ballistic twin of the nine three, especially with a 250 grain bullet. Practical same trajectory and recoil. The classic load is 286 grain projectile at 2,350 fps with just over 3,500 ft-lbs of energy. The recoil is less than most loads in a 338 Win Mag, 8 ft-lbs of energy less with a 250 gain load. If you can’t find a decent rifle in 35 Whelen, there are a lot of great European options and ammo for the 9.3x62, it’s an African classic.

Bill Wilson, I have purchased a 300 ham'r barrel along with "all" of the components from Wilson Combat to put together this rifle, but the chamber is so tight that when you load a round and don't fire it you can't get the round out without mortaring the rifle to unload. The chamber was so tight that it would pull the bullet out of the case leaving it stuck in the barrel. This the 2nd barrel sent to me and was having the same problem with. I was on the phone with customer service and the gentlemen I was speaking with told me that I should ease the blot closed and then use the forward assist to complete the loading process. This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard of when loading an ar 15 type rifle. He said that the chamber so tight that loading it the proper way was wrong, that you have gently load it because the weight of the bolt is pushing the bullet into the lands and groves, that it it essentially locking the bullet into the barrel. He said that it may improve with shooting It, but I don't want to spend money for something that should work right out of the box. If this is the case what is the sense in have a semi automatic rifle. Iwould like to hear from Bill Wilson himself.

Yeah, but what happens when you cut the barrel down to 9 or 10 inches which is a huge benefit for the 300 blk. Even with supers. Don’t really see the need for this. Especially with the cost, rifle or ammo.

Bet with a short barrel that accuracy isn’t so great with that slow twist rate either.

Seeing as this round wasnt made to be shot out of a short barrel, I dont see why you would. The 300 blk was designed to be shot out of a 9 inch barrel, which makes it a solid option for a pistol or sbr. If I have read correctly, the 300 hamr provides more energy at longer distances.

A Wilson Combat version in 300 Ham'r seems like a badass Idea 💡: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKh1y6OqeruaoKQ.html Then add a quad stack magazine version with a Heavy Barrel then you would have a lightweight Higher than Normal capacity Sporting Rifle 💪

*Actually, both have recently been seeing record usage by sev US/CAN SOF units' higher tier SMU (mostly by civ & def intel agencies) but 300 HAM'R, with more thump & range than 300BLK w/tons of ass tearing speed, has been run through sev KAC SR 16s, Troy SOC C, LMT mated to URGI 14" (same w/Grendel recently too)..and most of the SOF armorers reporting these super rare custom system conversions & who's choosing them (USASOC's CT guys who do hog hunts, for instance) which says a TON since most are w/AWG*

I would respectfully disagree that the 300 Ham’r would be good for home defense. Unless you live on a ranch where your neighbors are miles apart. There’s just too much penetration for use in an urban environment. I’m sure Mr. Wilson would agree.

Folks said the same thing about the .300 blackout. This isn't some obscure company like AAC or a big corporation like Remington where they can afford to throw money away on something that may not work. With the following that WC has I imagine this round will have it's day. Besides everything needed to hand load this is commercially available.

Don't do a barrel swap. AR's are easy to build. Build a dedicated 300 Ham'r rifle and tailor it for the round. It's usually cheaper to do it that way too over buying a whole rifle.

I'm glad for innovation, but designing a round for a platform instead of the platform for a round is backward. It will never be optimal. Find a need, design the perfect round for that need, then design the perfect platform for it.

So in the end Wilson rips off the 300 Blk AAC! Make the same old converted 300 Blk Out cut off 5.56 case a pinch longer and add a pinch more powder, compress the load and lower the twist rate, Big deal, this is not another big mass inovation!. Then the price of the gun..Ha Ha! Then the price and availibility ammo.. Ha Ha!. Then why thread the barrel if you can't suppress it? If you really need or have to have more power than a 300 BLK or an AK.. 7.62 x 39, then just get or build a light AR-10 that uses a real .308 cartridge (And way cheaper and available everywhere too!) and be done with it, Then go man up those weak old girly man arms or just quit and retire you can't do it forever!... Then you say your cartridge has more fps, range, and footpounds of energy over the 300 Blk and the AK and then use it for home denfence? Then what, hitting the neighbor kids nextdoor thru 6 walls? Your an knot head sir!..

Awww...it is an awesome idea. I really like it. And you don't have to buy a whole new gun, just the barrel and 300 blk out mags. For me, cost of ammo is keeping me away. I think right now (Dec 27, 2022) on Wilson website the cheapest ammo they have, which is on sale, like 20/30% off, is still $25 a box of 20 rds. Which is not crazy bad, compared to other similar cartridges, but I can get inexpensive .308 and .300 ammo for .75 or less a round on sale
