I think you're the only person on that river that knows how to handle fish. I stopped going there about 10 years ago due to the nonsense. On the flip side, beautiful video, great content, and thank you for the video. I hope, with the help of ambassadors like you, we can get back to the respect this great fishery once had. Thank you so much for the great comment. The only reason I put up these videos is to try and make a positive difference. There are plenty of great anglers on the Vedder, we just have to teach the next generation the good ways.

hopefully this helps people. One of my concerns is folks taking ten minutes to dispatch a fish after its been taken from the water and fighting. Its frustrating to see. The extreme example being keeping a live salmon on a stringer in the shallows. Seen that more than once live nd in videos. I recommend having a bonker very handy, POW and its dead, rip the gills out help it bleed out a bit and scrape with a knife to clean the blood and more so the slime off so the fish can be bagged cleanly if using bags as I like to do. I fish smaller streams so I do not have 4 coho to deal with lol so a bag is clean and neat, and helps keep the stench down in my ancient vest. Also when dealing with multiple fresh salmon, before cleaning and prepping, if you have them in a tub or cooler, add a half a cup of vinegar and water. This will break down the slime and make processing more fun~

My next planned video, I will be going over many of those points with regards to white chinook. Yeah, I've also seen people bleed fish without bonking them first, I think that's a terrible thing to do to a living creature. Thanks for the comment.

There will always be bad practices however as long people like yourself share that gained knowledge one angler at a time it will make a difference. I will try my best to be better and hopefully pass on the message

Petr, what do you use as your cp mainline? You mentioned 12lb...was that leader or main? mono? fluro? thanks

I run 20 pound maxima ultragreen for main line and Seaguar Fluoro for leaders. When I'm targeting chinook I use 15 pound leader, but mostly it's 12. Some people like to run lighter gear, especially in clear water, but I catch plenty of fish with this setup.

How long is your rod? I am worried rod may get broken while landing a fish using net.

That rod is 11 feet. It helps to have a long handled net so that you don't have to high stick the rod too much. I have a bigger and longer net that I use when there are a lot of chinooks around. Was not expecting a chinook in that shallow water.

What net do you recommend for salmon/steelhead?

I prefer nets with a shallow bag and a long handle. It's really hard on a rod to be lifted high so you can land a fish by yourself. It's called high sticking and can break the tip. That's why you see me reach back with the rod and way forward with the net. A long handle helps that a lot. There is not specific brand that's best, lucky strike and gibbs both make good nets.

28 is a great fish for the Vedder, almost 3 times the size of the one in this video. I released one last year that was well over 30, but my biggest this year was maybe 22. They're an awesome fish even at the smaller end of the scale.
