Hi Marie Louise - my 'go-to' colours (in addition to black and Titanium White) are: Indantherine Blue, Quinacridone Burnt Orange and Indian Yellow. I guess that equates roughly to your Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre. I also use Yellow Ochre quite a lot. Quinacridone Burnt Orange and Indian Yellow are gorgeous transparent colours and mixed together can produce an intense orange which I'm very fond of.

I always loved the story of how Indian Yellow was popular with all my art hero’s; Vermeer, Van Gogh and of cause Turner. How it was originally made from cow urine - you probably know the story..

Hiya Marie Louise, Thanks very much for the lovely video and showcasing the process. When I first started off painting I used to limit my palette, to about 172 colours! Although the Botanical palette is very different my desert island palette would be: Azo yellow light, Cadmium yellow medium, Pthalo blue green shade, Ultramarine blue, Permanent rose, Cadmium red light, or Scarlet lake, Burnt sienna , Nickel Azo yellow/ Transparent yellow in some ranges, Burnt umber, Cadmium orange, BIG tube, 200ml of white. All the above are Winsor and Newton. I include an orange as it is brighter than any mixed orange and can be altered to make browns and sumptuous dark tropical greens. If anyone likes the vibrant green gold it can be mixed easily from two colours above, Pthalo blue and Nickel Azo yellow, which are the two pigments used to make Green gold. Not only is mixing your own better but you also have two extra colours to choose from. Peace and love, David,

Hi David, The 172 colors must be an incredible and impressive sight when all setup on the worktable. Thanks for sharing your desert island palette - reminds me that I want to get out my permanent rose one day and give it another go. And you're right we always need a big tube of white - in fact we can't have too much white can we?! ;-)

I love this!!!! I love the softness of it. Because it's soft, but everything is still clear, not just muddy as I tend to make, or too dark as I also tend to make ;) I love mixing greys....a while ago I saw an acrylic pouring artist i love to watch (Sara Taylor) and her gray was lovely and she mentioned how she mixed it and I fell in love with the different grays I can get and how fun it is to try it with different colors. Its fun to be surprised by the color...like I mixed ultramarine and burnt sienna and a tiny bit of yellow for a nice warm gray..but I wanted to see what changing the type of blue would do and so I used phthalo (sp) and I got the most gorgeous blue green that is one of my very favorite colors and of course can lighten it with white....but anyway. I know at 48 I should know all this...but I only forced myself to seriously try art in my early 40's as a way to deal with my chronic pain and ptsd without more meds, as I was done with that. Anyway...realized I could draw, which all my life had thought I could not..fell in love with all of it. But I'm very limited in how often I can do any of it with this body of mine, so self learning is slow going. But, it is something that has helped, body and mind, more then I can say. Honestly, even if all I can do on a bad day is swipe one color across a canvas or paper, it's enough...not sure why, but it gets other parts of your brain working and thinking differently and the beauty of color is alwayshelpfulto the mind I think which then helps the body. Anyway...sorry for the babble😳🙄😊...but I just meant to say how much I agree on mixing your own small palette of colors for a cohesive vibe, and also for the fun of seeing what magical colors pop up :) Thank you once again for such awesome information and tips and amazing inspiration!!!!🥰🥰

Marie Louise I think this is one of my favourites of yours. Or have I said that before? Ha ha. This one really showed the soft glazes that you put on top of each other. One thing I struggle with though is the drying time. Most artist teachers don’t demo this and I struggled picking it up with watercolours too. Then they become muddy. Down the track I’m hoping with your videos you could show mixing your paint and when you are drying. I noticed in this one you mentioned leaving it for a certain time and then wiping it. I know this is learning that comes from experience so I will continue experimenting with your style and tips. Thank you so much.

You are working so diligently and practicing a lot so I have no doubt you'll get the hang of it. And yes, the drying part is paramount to avoid mud and general mess. Good thing acrylics dry relatively quickly. I know some artists use hairdryers with much success and I also have one but rarely use it. I use the waiting time to ponder my next step with a cup of tea in my hand haha :-)

I love your use of neutrals. Acrylics can look a bit garish and this is something I really want to avoid. Have to say painting loose is so hard! I'm used to soft pastels and painting realistic landscape but trying more abstract acrylics. Your landscapes are exactly what I'm seeking, how to say a lot with so.little. Yes acrylics can easily look a bit garish and it's definitely something I want to avoid as well. I find that a limited palette and lot and lots of color mixing is crucial to avoid the garishness of acrylics. I use complimentary colors often to create a wide variety of neutrals. Hey recently got to know about your channnel. And I'm glad that I found it because from a lot of days I have searching for tutorials on abstract seascapes. And your seascapes are just amazing 😍😍. A lot needed to learn from you. Your 160gsm paper is quite heavy as mine gets easily ruptured 😅. Anyways will be goinf through all of your videos for acrylic and will be sharing progress with you if that is feasible for you. And yes I do have pallete full of colors. Not the limited one like yours. I have always struggled to choose color while doing abstracts. Any pointer you want to add here would be great. Sorry for this long comment. Thank so much Omkar. My very best tip is that I'd recommend a layer or two of gesso on your paper before you paint on it. Makes it much better and stronger and able to handle water/paint when using many, fluid layers. Happy painting and thanks for watching :)

This is really lovely, c'est magnifique! I like the poetry in your paintings, and the simplicity also, yet I realise it is much more difficult to achieve than I thought, having tried to imitate your abstract landscape. I wonder if oil pastels would be ok to replace the "gelatos" that I have, as water soluble crayons? I am delighted to have found you on youtube! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much Marguerite! I think that yes you should absolutely try your oil pastels. They will behave differently because they are oil based and can't be manipulated with water. But if you leave your mark-making until you are finished with the acrylic layers that should'nt be a problem. Welcome to the channel and have a lovely day :)

I’ve just painted my first ever acrylic following your guide and it went not too bad, it’s nothing compared whit what you’ve make but I’m still proud. Now the paper I used it’s definitely not the best one… it began to break apart. Also the crayons that I’ve got are not water soluble hehe. I would like to share my painting in the comments but that’s not possible 😅 I have troubles mixing the colours, I know it’s just 3 colors but… I would really appreciate if you make some more videos where you show also how you mix your colors. Hi Richard, yes and no. If the painting are on paper I don't varnish as they will be framed behind mat and glas. The painting on canvas get varnished and I usually use spray varnish for this. Cheers

I use the same techniques on canvas. But I always prime the canvas very well with a couple of layers of gesso first. Helps give some “tooth” and facilitate the initial thin washes. I varnish work on canvas with many and very thin layers of spray varnish. Amble drying time in between layers is crucial.

Yes but I didn’t used to add gesso when the canvas was pre primed. But after experimenting and trying many different approach’s Ive come to prefer a couple of additional layers of gesso.

The work I do on paper I don't fix or seal in any way. I just keep the pieces in my sketchbooks until I want to frame them under glass. When working on canvas I seal the paintings using many thin layers of spray varnish (for acrylics). The trick here is to do MANY THIN layers and to let them dry completely in between. The drying in between is crucial and also that the layers of varnish are VERY THIN so that the painting surface doesn't get too wet. If the painting gets too wet it could change or ruin the marks with water-soluble crayons and pencil. There is always a risk of changing or potentially ruining the marks if I try and hurry this part - so I always remind myself to be very patient with this step. How do you know to add the dark in the front and light in the back? You make it look so natural. But how do you know where to put which value - dark to light and light to dark!

I think it's a combination of trail and error and many years of experience and painting many hundreds of paintings. A quick tip I would give you would be to take black and white photos of paintings/photographs you like. Looking at them in B&W will help you learn about value contrasts which are really important in both abstract and realistic artwork. Thank you for another lovely painting. I too started as a watercolor painter and very often use acrylic paint in a watercolor fashion. I so enjoy your use of glazes but wonder how your paper holds up to the many many layers you use. Do you use 140 lb watercolor paper??? Thank you once again for sharing you art. It is an invaluable inspiration to me.

Thanks so much. I rarely plan to use many layers in my work on paper. But I often get carried away and then regret that I didn’t use thicker paper. I actually work mostly on canvas but love to make preliminary work on paper. I do have more heavyweight watercolour paper from Arches and Stephen Quiller but I feel precious about those so tend to use the cheaper/thinner papers. I know I really should open those lovely papers up and start painting on them. Thanks for your feedback and now I’ll seriously consider getting out those expensive papers and use them!!
