Does your acrylic colors sometimes look unnatural or harsh?
As painters we often want to use a range of muted colors. Everything from sand and cream over burnt sienna, burnt umber and other warm earth tones. And cool neutrals like Paynes grey and a variety of gorgeous blues and grays.
If you want an elegant and balanced look and feel to your paintings then mixing and using neutrals (also called naturalized colors or grays) is the next step for you. In this video I share my favorite way to mix neutrals/grays using two complimentary colors.
In the world of acrylic painting, discovering the magic of two colors can open the door to a wide range of stunning neutral tones. This technique is particularly ideal for those new to acrylics, providing a simple yet effective way to produce a diverse range of beautiful neutrals.
By understanding the artful combination of two primary colors, beginners can achieve a rich palette of muted, sophisticated tones. This approach not only simplifies the painting process but also allows for a gradual exploration of color mixing and shading techniques.
Embark on your acrylic painting journey with this innovative method, and witness how the harmonious blending of just two colors can unfold a world of creative possibilities. Say goodbye to complexity and hello to a canvas filled with hundreds of captivating neutrals - a true delight for aspiring artists taking their first steps into the colorful realm of acrylic painting.

Oh, I so wish I had been familiar with your channel when I began painting five years ago; it would have saved me from buying over 40 different tubes of various shades. But the art store loved me!
WOW!!! Great lesson as always. You are simply amazing!!! I learn valuable new ideas every time I watch your uploads. Neutrals are such mysterious, intriguing and useful colors. Paynes grey and burnt sienna are two of my favorite color combinations and until today I had NO IDEA now to mix them myself. Thank you beautiful Lady ❤

Great video and very helpful :) I love mixing the colors I'm already using in a painting to make neutrals. Green and Red do that same thing. And yellow and purple. Pretty much any color on opposite sides of the color wheel. Thanks again for a great teaching video!

Thank you for this. I studied colour theory many years ago but I know now that I need to revisit that.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us, and it is clear that you have so much more that you can teach me, MSG Leum
Thanks alot
Dankeschön ☀️ 🎀 🙏
I have just spent my afternoon completing a study of all my greens … I have a whole new pallet… I also completed Harmonious Color… love your colour lesson. I do have a question … what are the rules when mixing Opaque colours with Transparent colours? I did try a Transparent Green with an Opaque Red … it didnt muddy the way I thought it would … but it did turn to the red hue quickly.
Super gode videoer
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, its always so helpful and informative. Making colour mix swatches are so useful, im going to do this one. Thanks again......Alioban
Hej Marie Louise - tak for tips.
Très bonne très explication 👍🌹
What blue do you use at :15 of the video. The dark blue is so beautiful. Thank you!
Hi dear Thank you for your amazing videos Would you please make a video explaining the main rules of painting a landscape or seascapes please 🙏🏻 I have learned alot from your videos but I still have the quotation of what rules to follow to have the correct compensation for example and the how much percentage of dark values vs light values should be considered 🙏🏻 Thank you in advance 🤍
Thank you🙏 What palet do you use?so the akryl Not drying to quick?
Question - Is the WN Galleria paints what you routinely use? I've alway gotten heavy body paints but find them hard to work with if I want thinner washes so I've been thinking about moving over to the more soft body paints. I always thought these were considered student grade paints.
@TR-rz1xt

Have you considered adding an acrylic medium (not water) to your heavy body paint to make it more workable?
@carolclay7082

I do add mediums. But the WN Galleria paints are a lot less expensive so if the pigment load and lightfastness is comparable to the more expensive heavy body paints, then it would be worth it to use those instead for things like this.
I’m from the United States and I said subscribe to your channel and I would love to be able to come there and see one of your shows though that’s not possible if you ever have a show that I know of or you have had one that they have a catalog could you please tell us how to get in purchase a catalog
was interested but cadmium is very toxic and we no longer paint with it. could you show this with different base colors, or does it only work with these?
How do you keep them from drying out on your palette
@janerogers5717

Put damp kitchen roll paper under the greaseproof paper then you can cover with a lid to keep paint til another day.... it's called a wet palette (I use a ferere roche box) JR
Thank you for this!! Very good information. But I thought ultramarine blue was a warm blue? Is W&N's version cool?
@Finkeldinken
2 ай бұрын
She is using relative colour temperature. No matter the kind of blue it will always be referenced as cool because she is "holding it up against" orange, which will be a warmer hue than almost anything else. 😊

@@Finkeldinken Thank you for that explanation. I am new to painting and color theory. This is more helpful than I can express. Much appreciated!
Hvor er du go' 😊
Is it bad if we lose chroma as we mix? As far as I know the more you mix colors the more you lose chroma! Any thoughts? Thank you

I don't think ion it as either good or bad. You loose intensity when mixing complimentary colors, yes. But in return you create lovely neutrals. It all depends on what you want and need for your specific artwork.
The first minute of audio, while in front of the painting, is rather soft and distant.
Thank you for all your good information. This has always been my downfall. Ugh. I also went ahead and downloaded your free offering of " 5 Proven Ways To Loosen Up Your Painting Style". Thank you again.
I have tried to download your instructions and filled all the relevant info but no success. I like your videos and I subscribed but am sorry not to have your pdf guide.
Please talk with an audio expert for help getting a mike or changing where your current sound reception is to get rid of the echo. so very hard to understand you.
Ultramarine is a warm blue as it is a red base. I use the prussian blue for the cool tones. Great video for beginners either way.
thank you
