In this video I will paint 2 loose, semi abstract landscapes and give you my favourite tips to help you move towards a more free and loose painting style with acrylics.
Materials I use in the video are:
Sketching Paper 110lb/160gram, smooth and acid free. You can use any type of paper, try different ones to find your favourite :)
Acrylic paint (yellow ochre, burnt sienna, untramarine blue, mars black and titanium white)
masking tape, various brushes, painitng knife and watersoluble crayons/pencils.
As an art teacher I often hear my students say they want to paint looser, freer and with more expression. There are many tips and ways to loosen up and I encourage you to try the ones that appeal to you and add your own as you progress on your painting journey.
I hope this video will help you with some ideas for loose acrylic paintings whether you paint landscapes, florals or even pure abstracts.

    I love all of your advice in this one :) giving yourself permission...so important and yet SO difficult, though I don't know why....and its me, not others. My husband is always thrilled when I want to paint because he knows that my pain levels are not as bad as normal if I'm up to trying to paint and even when we have no money, like now, he wants me to paint and says he'll figure out how to get me supplies, so he's great about it...though I feel guilty using money we need for food or mortgage of course so I don't use much, but enough to make us both happy. But it's still very hard for me to allow myself to just do something I enjoy without thinking of all the things I should be doing. Like if my pain levels are down that afternoon then I should be cleaning or whatever so I never allow myself time to paint. So, working on that. As I said in other comments, I have loads to learn :) also how to be loose...I want SO badly to be loose, its what I picture in my head...but some how as I paint i become so overly detailed. Working on several paintings is a super good idea! Although I can only fit so much on my dining table ;) but I'll definitely look for a notebook like yours...I'm just amazed at how well your sketch book takes all that watery acrylic paint!! It does beautifully! And then I could try lots of things without the stress of "ruining" a canvas, because that also stops me from painting :) sorry for the babbling 😳 but I truly appreciate your work and the effort you put in to these videos! I love them :) thank you again!!

    @@TheDanishPainter hi! I just had to tell you because I'm super excited...so I told my husband about your sketchbook painting trials so he found a bit to get me one!! It's an arteza mixed media sketchbook, 110lb, just 9x12inch...I think yours looks a lot bigger but no matter what, I'm excited :) it should get here later this week. Super excited to try out some looser (hopefully loose :/ I'll use a bigger brush like you said) paintings without the pressure or guilt of (in my mind) "wasting" or "ruining" a canvas!! So hopefully I'll be able to relax more and try more things :) Thanks again!!

    I jist had to rematch this as my sketchbook came in a few days ago and I'm hoping to sit down and play with it tomorrow! Though I've been hoping to use it for several days but something unavoidable has come up each day🙄 but while waiting on dinner one night I did take the time to tape off my paper...just into 2 rectangle shapes. I have a photograph I took years ago that I want to paint, I've done the black and white thing to it as you suggested so we'll see. But even though it's jist paper that I bought jist to try things out on, I'm still nervous, so figured I'd rematch this one to remind myself to relax and loosen up. Another thing I have to remember is my color layering... recently I've made a bunch of simple thanks you cards in watercolor, which means the lights to darks are opposite, so that in this sketchbook I'm using for acrylic I can get real dark as you've suggested and always add more light or whatever over in more layers, so hopefully that will help me relax too. I use both my hands for most everything, art included, but thought I might do one with only using my left (bit more dominant) hand on one and only my right on the other since I usually bounce back n forth...though a lot of that is due to pain so when one hand or arm is too painful I switch and I think loads of artists do this too, so I'm doing nothing new. But it might be a challenge to only use the one, so might be fun. And they're small and I'll take a break if I need a layer to dry so shouldn't be too hard on the joints. Anyway...excited, and nervous, but more excited, to try this out and get some of these ideas I have in my head out onto paper, even if not good, and not hold back for fear of messing up a canvas. So, thanks again!

  • @TheDanishPainter

    @TheDanishPainter

    3 жыл бұрын

    Taping off your paper is the first step so you're already well on your way - yay! And using ideas from watercolor with the layering and all sounds like an excellent idea. Oh and you know what - having some nervousness is VERY normal - you are after all going outside your comfort zone by trying and learning something new. Take care & happy painting :)

    @@TheDanishPainter thank you :) spent the afternoon on them....they're awful :( but...I figure I'll walk away from them for a bit then try some different things on the next ones....my whole head screams at me that I'm worthless at this and everything and to not bother....nothing new there :) but, I've not let that part of my brain totally defeat me yet, close at times over the years, but I know it need to practice and practice so that's what I'll do in this sketchbook and work on not being as frustrated as I am at myself :) we've had horrible scary weather here in TN but today is beautiful and everything is starting to bloom, so I think I'll take a break and go outside and take some pictures of the cute little buds on the trees and try to make that part of my brain shut up ;) so....I'll keep trying. Thanks as always for your help :) hope you're having a beautiful day and rest of the week!!!!!🥰
