In this video I will troubleshoot and transform one of my acrylic landscape paintings that has become muddy and boring and turn it into a much better painting.
Improve your painting quickly with this quick and simple method. It's all about values and in this video I show you WHY it's important, HOW to tell if your values are off and lastly I show you WHAT to do about it and HOW to fix it.
The principles of value applies to both realistic and abstract painting. And value is one of the most important elements in a good painting but sometimes it can be a bit hard to learn to see values. I'll share a quick and easy way to find out what the values in your painting are so that you can take action and improve your painting instantly.
Learn to see and recognize problems in your paintings and what to do to clear them up. Critiquing our own artwork is sometimes hard. I'll share what's been working for me and I hope it will help improve your artwork and take your abstract landscape paintings to the next level.

    Hello Painters :) I wanted to share my process when I'm not happy with a painting. I'll troubleshoot one of my own paintings and talk about my thoughts and the steps I take along the way. I hope you find this process useful and encouraging to see that even experienced artists, like me, make lots of paintings we really struggle with and that this is totally NORMAL :) Thanks for watching and have a lovely creative weekend :)

    You’re simply great in your generosity to share your knowledge and techniques! I used to paint in oil abstracts in an art studio before the pandemic. Stopped for 3 years due to the pandemic. However, your videos have rekindled my interests in painting. The use of acrylics in a loose and somewhat abstract format have unleashed a different path for me. Many thanks!

    This is great Anne Marie, never thought of trouble shooting my work, I normally just paint over my least favourite paintings. I really like the idea of using watercolour pencils too, you've shown what a difference they can make. Thank you.

    This was awesome! I struggle with MANY things as I'm just slowly teaching myself.....and I definitely don't know all the terms...but this, values, I'm thinking is a big issue in my acrylics as well as watercolor. I think I get nervous when I hit a certain "doneness", you know, where it looks ok and could maybe be done but I know there's something just not right but then I get nervous to just go back over it in case I were to make it worse. But, the black & white photo is so smart!! And building up the courage to just go for it and learn by doing....I'm trying to build that courage...I'm not good at that, but, I'm trying...so I appreciate the help and learning so much from you and so many on this platform! I truly appreciate it!!

    There is so much to learn and I don't think I will ever get to know it all where art is concerned. But you know just taking small steps in the right direction is progress. It seems to me that you are doing just fine. I think panting is hard because there is no ONE answer to what we do. There are so many paths we can go and decisions to make along the way. Thanks for coming back and looking at my videos and leaving comments. Wishing a good weekend. Best regards, Marie Louise

    @@TheDanishPainter thank you Marie :) yea, painting, art in general, is so subjective with so many ways to do things that there aren't too many absolutes. But I do truly appreciate your videos because it definitely gives me good encouragement and good basics to build on. Plus, you're a joy to watch a your art is just so beautiful :) so thank you for that!! :)

But it’s definitely something I would like to do in the future. Thanks so very much for your feedback and for watching 🎨☀️

    Very helpful and bold. An old art teacher told me in my first class... people often don't get the darks dark enough or the lights light enough. I try to keep this in mind. Please, what crayon are you using? I love your paintings and your videos are inspiring.

    I use a mix of different crayons and pencils - so just use what you already have on hand. My favorites are Neo Color II by Caran d'ache. Woody pencils by Stabilo.

    How is your sketchbook not falling apart?! Whenever I paint in a book the page warps terribly. I guess the answer is thicker paper but in this video your paper doesn't seem all that thick. Great video as always 👍

  • @TheDanishPainter

    @TheDanishPainter

    Yes I should have gessoed the paper before starting...hadn't planned on that many layers initially. I tried many sketchbooks and the paper is really too thin most times for the way I treat it. My favorite sketchbook at the moment is Daler Rowney Ebony Sketchbooks. They are spiral bound and although the paper is only 160 gsm it holdt up to quite a bit of water and mixed media. Hope that helps :)

    Yes, a coat of gesso is always a good idea. Depending on the type of paper I use I just dive in.
