Sunday Profile: Tatum O'Neal

Tatum O'Neal was only nine when she starred in her first film, 1973's "Paper Moon," with her father, Ryan O'Neal. She stole the show, and won an Academy Award. But her career and her life weren't easy after that. She's always been remarkably open about her struggles with addiction, her divorce from tennis great John McEnroe (with whom she has three children), and a strained relationship with her dad. But O'Neal is showing the same grit with her family, her health and her career as she showed on screen as a child. Correspondent Tracy Smith reports.

Wow. What high praise for McEnroe. Tatum is an honest person. In her book she said McEnroe was crushed when she left him but she told McEnroe at that time that one day he would appreciate that she left him because someone else would be better for him than she was. Only a big person could say that. Her mother, Joanna Moore, was so beautiful and such a good actress.

I feel like Tatum is a kindred spirit; my dad was v verbally abusive and hypercritical. It's impacted all of my personal and professional relationships. I've said the exact same thing re: my ex...he wasn't perfect, but I would have been loved, safe, and not alone. Maybe I should've stayed. He's remarried and...he's not "happy," but content. And I'm still single, 20 yrs later. With a similarly close relationship with my daughter (hers seems lovely). I also am now fighting a medical battle. Alone. I send positive vibes and wish her all the best 💛💛💛

I think her crazy upbringing ruined her. Her father is a nasty, vicious, narcissist jealous of his own daughter- he left her and her brother alone to fend for themselves as teenagers when he met Farrah Fawcett. Her mother was addicted to pills, an alcoholic, and had a teenage boyfriend who beat and molested Tatum. How could anyone be okay living like that? It's a miracle she survived, much less gained such clarity and grace.

John McEnroe does not seem like an easy person, maybe he has mellowed out. I am happy she felt loved but he seems to have certain personality type that is familiar to her...

I'll never forget when I saw Paper Moon for the first time. Tatum O'Neal was the absolute spitting image of my younger sister Bonnie. Attitude too. I've always liked her. She has a decency and a kindness you can feel. Its funny that her best friend is her daughter, and not her two sons. So typical. When a father has a son or a daughter, he has a son until he gets married but a daughter for LIFE. When a mother has a son or a daughter, she has a son until he gets married but a daughter for LIFE. So damn true.

Ryan O’Neal will never win a “Father of the Year” award. He actually said he hates his son, Griffin. Reportedly, he was always so jealous of Tatum for winning the Oscar. Ryan was a good looking man many years ago but a terrible father. His only offspring who didn’t have issues was Patrick O’Neal because he was solely raised by his mom, Leigh Taylor Young.
