Sunak to fumble seats gained by Boris in ‘extraordinary’ loss | Hugo Swire

“It is extraordinary to think here we had a year or so ago a Tory majority of 80 under Boris and we’re now talking about as many Tory seats being left after the election.”
The Conservative Party are heading towards a “extraordinary” loss as the electorate becomes more “volatile”, says Conservative peer Hugo Swire.

"Sunak to fumble seats gained by Boris" is an odd way to express this. The current dismal position in the polls began at the tail end of Boris's time at Number 10. They were baked in by Truss's disastrous 40-odd days. What Sunak has done is to fail to reverse that process. He's not the one who cost them the seats, he's the one who's not been able to win them back. It's not clear there's anything he could have done, but we'll never know because it's difficult to think of anything he's done as Prime Minister that Boris would have handled differently.

Rather disingenuous to attack Starmer over Taxing the state pension; That was only on the horizon because the current government continue with their stealth income tax increase with frozen tax allowances. They have created this problem and now want praise (and votes) for partially correcting it for a proportion of the population. It's my understanding that even with the proposed increase in pensioner's tax allowances some on the old SERPS system will still be dragged into income tax. There is also the risk that if this increase doesn't reach the level that tax allowances would ordinarily have reached under the traditional annual increase pensioners are going to be paying more tax from even modest private and employment schemes than they otherwise would have.

There are 20% of population for whom immigration is their top priority, and there is nothing wrong with that by the way. In 2019 they attached themselves to the Conservative Party that has been economically liberal since Thatcher and thus pro free trade in goods, services and people. That group, that has now gone to Reform, has very little overlap on policy with the Conservatives, has found a new home, even if it should have been SDP by policy match. Meanwhile the Conservatives have also more or less lost the professional classes because they have been anti business, anti competence and pro corruption and pro crime for a decade. This isn't volatility it is the rational actions of the voters.

These commentators have poor memories. Was there really that much enthusiasm for Tony Blair? He was a great showman with great spin doctors, so they used music like "Things can only get better" to create the impression for enthusiasm, but Tony Blair only got 43% in that General Election, when the only significant minor party was the Lib Dems. If Starmer's Labour gets 40%, with a combined 34% going to Reform, Lib Dems and Green, that'll be a reflection of how much more fragmented our politics now is, not how popular Tony Blair was. As for Labour not giving detail of what they would do, in 1997 Blair produced a pledge card with five pledges, which was ridiculed at the time as lacking in substance. As for enthusiasm for Thatcher, was there much enthusiasm for her in 1979, even among Tories? I don't think it was until her twin victories over Argentina and Scargill that this enthusiasm started.

If course she is - you are clearly incapable of looking at this dispassionately. She is respected throughout much of the world, regardless of what nasty parochial left wingers might think.

Johnson wasn't charismatic ...he was a buffoon, not a serious person. In the end regarding Brexit he resorted to a coin toss as to his view, no intellect in that at all.

You argue against yourself. If the guy is a Buffoon and not a serious person, then clearly he must've won people over with his charisma.

It seems by losing Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson, British politics has lost two leaders who could inspire people not only in Britain but globally.

Any seats lost will be lost because of Brexit, Johnson and Truss. Sunak was just the fool who wanted to be PM after those three disasters and so will take the blame.
