Sunak's failure to lead Tories behind 'Gamble-gate' | Alastair Campbell

“We’ve seen a pattern of behaviour where public service comes second to party interest or personal interest.”
A "loss of moral compass" within the Tory party pathed the way for the election betting scandal says Alastair Campbell.

In case this hasn't been made abundantly clear: the modern conservative movements, not just in the UK but across the entire world, are not based on any sort of moral fortitude. They are decaying appendages of a billionaire class that are upset about normal people demanding a fairer set of circumstances from the obscenely wealthy.

@@georgesdelatour can you clarify the point you draw from this? My understanding is that he is centre-right-to-centre-left economically though in certain respects he is more socially conservative. By which I mean, although he is socially liberal on issues like gay marriage and so-forth, he deeply values tradition, moderate reform, and the idiosyncrasies of social groups - he seems a conservative in the vein of Burke. Furthermore, some of his more centre-left economics seem informed by a one nation conservative ethos rather than a left-wing philosophy.

There needs to be a new code of conduct which all politicians are expected to abide by. It seems to me that we have never had one because it was expected that an elected official had a sense of morality or integrity. The last 14 years have demonstrated otherwise. Therefore a new code of conduct which promises harsh discipline for violating it will remind politicians they are there to serve the public not line their own pockets. A code of conduct with a new set of rules to keep MPs in check would go a long way to restoring confidence with the public.
