Sunak ramps up defence to ‘Cold War levels’ | Tim Ripley & Steve Erlanger

“They don't need more tanks and planes and guns. They’ve got enough of them at the moment, but they need stuff to fire at the Russians.”
UK’s defence budget reaches “Cold War levels” as Rishi Sunak ramps up funds and pledges more aid to Ukraine, says defence analyst Tim Ripley and The New York Times’s Steve Erlanger.

If you think 'ramps up' is an acceptable term for only spending 2 5% GDP by 2030, no wonder the British military is so underfunded. In 1984 Britain was spending 5.5% GDP on the military. We waste billions of pounds in Britain a year. We have a complete breakdown of government, opposition and the civil service. Local councils also wasting money. I cant be bothered to list everything off, but if Britain was governed correctly, we could easily have 5 to 6% GDP spent on the military. Britain should have a futuristic home defense system in place already. Just like WW2 Britain again lacking any leadership on rapidly building it all in preparation, instead waiting for a major conflict and suffering to do anything. Take self sufficiency in energy, food and production/manufacturing, we learned nothing from WW2.

It's not cold war levels, we was spending 7% in 1955 and around 5% as the cold war ended.

Probably more transparent then. A lot of our taxes effectively gets laundered. So it might 5% off us using Russia an excuse, 2% ends up in the hands of our troops.

@@r200ti The amount of corruption over here is trivial. It was definitely NOT more transparent then either! We don't need an "excuse" to raise defence spending, it's just reflecting what the current security environment is. We've had 30 years of peace dividend, the world changes thoughz so we need to too

Well done. Tory has played a blinder with his £75B promise on defence spending. A bit like Klopp & Liverpool getting fit & in form Trent & Jota & Endo & Gakpo & Mo Salah back just in time. It will help Tory a lot in polls. Voters know historically Labour are always very very weak on defence & fighting terror. Once GE starts, their lead will melt away as Labour chose alleged jew hater racist MP's ( like Azar Ali to be Rochdale MP & others)

Russia producing 7x more weapons than Nato ( NY Times) we have about 35 operational tanks, a carrier we are looking to sell as we can’t get a crew even though Navy has took away the swimming test 😂 and we can’t even produce steel. Who do you think you are kidding Mr. Sunak

even if it went to 10% it wouldn't matter, it would line certain contractors pockets.. Would any amount in the uk actually help defend the country i doubt it, the most we get is mass immigration for cheap non native soldiers, but they'll all flee once war breaks out and realise they're being put on the front line kek.
