The UK is in a ‘pre-war situation’ | Col. Stuart Crawford

“The threats and risks are considerably heightened.”
The UK has “a lot of ground to make up” with its defence spending as we are in a “pre-war situation”, says leading defence analyst and former army officer Col. Stuart Crawford.

To paraphrase, "The UK is combat ineffective". Our political system has failed. Multiple public services are failing. Our infrastructure is failing. Our nuclear deterence has failed in multiple tests. Our military are poorly resourced and inefficiency that has grown over the last few decades has moved us further from a sustainable service. Austerity was actioned at the worse possible time in history. At the point of record low borrowing we decided to cut borrowing. We cut investment, so now all that we needed to do is needed, plus more. And on top of this it will cost more as interest rates are so high. THE PROBLEM IS LEADERSHIP! These people, who are in these videos are the point of failure.

And no mention of the actual existential threat we (and those nations this scenario deems 'enemies') aren't doing enough anout, but nit because the money is needed for more bloody weapons. Our species of uppity modified chimps sure have a propensity for allowing the worst elements in our societies to run things. You couldn't make this up.

The war footing went when Thatcher sold Royal Ordnance and the 16 munitions factories became 5. Then followed out sourcing of armed forces support functions and maintenance . Not only did this cut the supply of trained ex forces engineers to the civilian economy, the armed forces then needed civilian companies staff to go to war.

🤣🤣🤣🤣. Well, the politicians may well think we are in a pre war situation. But I think they will have a big shock when it comes to what the people think. Russia is not the threat. The government has allowed the threat to the British people to land in our country already. And they are housing them at our expense. The youth of this country have no desire to go to war. Nor do I think they would if asked. I would not go to war for a country that treats its own people with such contempt. Nor will my children.

There was a Tsunami of contracting out which has been a bloody disaster. Even some of our bases at home hardly have a serviceman/woman present it's all run by civvies of the civil service blob type through to a team from a specific company - all too frequently not even a British company to administer the whole shebang. In my years of service every trademan in the army had it firmly banged into their heads and instilled in their training and their expectations that first of all they were an infantryman and secondly they were a tradesman. - Where are those tradesmen/infanteers now? They are all civil servants or company employees - some of whom may well end up having to be convince with huge salaries to go abroad and service the war machine. Bloody disgusting and it was the Conservatives who were the driving force behind this hollowing out for decades. BTW I would never ever again vote Labour and the Conservatives should be my natural perch but unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat I will have to do some alternative seeking. If we genuinely want to have a serious military then we have to make other changes too. Firstly we need to forget about Net Zero because making weapons is very costly in terms of energy. We need to nationalise military production because the current arrangement is simply money laundering. We need to re-establish heavy industry such as steel production, we can't rely on China. And that means opening up our coal mines to get at the 300 years of coal under our feet. And we need to recruit people who want to fight for our values. Russia has all of these in abundance.

Calling a 0.2% points of GPD increase over six years being on a war footing is absurd. This is less than a 9% increase over six years or a 1.5% increase per year; this is just statistical noise at this point. Further, it assumes governments over the next six years will follow through. To see what going on a war footing looks like consider the 1930s - From 1394 to 1938 British defense spending increased by almost 50% PER YEAR, quintupling in just four years and this in a period when Britain’s economy was in much worse shape.

Russia had legitimate claim under UN to R2P their historical ethnics in Ukraine... The UK has allowed in more illegal migrants than it has a standing Army. There are only 75,979 full time trained regulars in the British Army. In the last few years the government has deliberately allowed in 114,000 illegal migrants to cross the English Channel. The majority of them are Hezbollah types from Iran with a smaller number from Iraq. William the Conqueror only brought 8,000 men in 1066 when he invaded. Even if Defence spending were to double we are not in good shape to fight any wars and nor should we be continuing to get into endless wars. Grant Shapps is a big government statist who has lied to us for years about electric vehicles and now he and Sunak the Wimp in Chief want to take us into a full blown war after cutting our military for the last 14 years and totally mismanaging our defences. We are incapable of defending the borders of friends and allies when they are attacked when we can't even defend our own. It is time to get rid of the Conservative and Labour parties once and for all and consign them both to the dustbin of history.

Russia and China's military industrial platform is run for purpose, this means they can produce weapons and ammunition cheaper and in larger quantities, they also think long-term, hence thousands of tanks in storage and upgraded if needed. UK PLC cannot fight an ongoing high intensity conflict due to the above flaw in strategic planning. Nor can this be solved as it's military planners and political class are in the pocket of the private defense industry, the uks military analysts appear to have a limited understanding of the logistics, infrastructure needed to fight a high intensity conflict.

'The UK's military industrial platform is run for profit.' Indeed it is, as they follow the US model. The military industrial platform in US-UK wage wars and gouge the tax payers to pay for it, saying he is about to be hit by an Iraqi missile in 40 minutes or a Russian invasion. The media goes along with such narratives. The politicians in the US are board members of arms companies or recipients of funding from the likes of Lockheed. It is very high corruption. That is why the US has been engaged in war after war. Russia and China's military industrial platforms are run for purpose - that is to defend their countries if invaded or threatened, they are not run on a 'wars for profit' model.

Plans for a major war lasting a few weeks needs to change. Resilence must be there and the ability to support others as well. 2.5% is inadequate and Poland are at 3.9% today. He is right 3% is realistic target. Remember Cold War was much higher percentage than that, it is reasonable and achievable. Politicians are short term Department responsibility dodgers or too agreeable to speak up.

I wonder if the PM is speaking from both sides of his mouth. This notion of UK needing to be put on a war footing is the phrase of the month it seems. Whilst it's difficult to go against that notion it should be understood we needed to have been thinking and acting on this 6 months into this war. Increase to 2.5% from appprox 2% by 2030 is hardly putting the country on, "A war footing". Where is the evidence that industry has been given the kickstart it needs to gear up the hardware our mlitary requires? Why have there not been added machinery lines to produce the 105mm/120mm/155mm ammo and the 120mm/81mm mortar rounds/the Sky Sabre production line takes how long to deliver one complete system to the military? We lose 6 Challengers in an engagement and how long before we have replacements ready to take their place? Then how long does it take to transport these items to where the business is being done? What heavy/medium lift capability do we have? This is just woeful and there are enough ex military MP's sat in the commons to have made their prescence felt long before now and fighting for everything from more and better married quarters to getting catering put back into the hands of the excellent Army Catering Corp and to innovative ways of getting youngster interested in going into the Armed Forces for short engagement/training plan with a reserve obligation afterward - on full pay of course. Everything except the ability of the service people themselves just seems to have fallen into a stagnant mess from which nobody seems to know how to extricate it all. Maybe we've just been at peace too long!?

This law preventing a President from withdrawing from NATO is almost certainly unconstitutional as the President’s inherent powers include (1) unilaterally abrogating treaties (the Courts have never prevented Presidents from doing so) and (2), as Commander in Chief, deploying or withdrawing the US military from theater which would achieve the same effect even if the Courts changed their mind and blocked formally withdrawing.

@@hackgolfer6752 The UK has always invested 2% of GDP, as 'advised' by NATO guidelines. If the US were to pull out of NATO, then I don't see why European countries should have to tolerate US military bases on their soil, such as in the UK and Germany. If this happened it would greatly reduce the US military global footprint and make it much more difficult for US forces to react quickly to threats, such as the current Houthi threats to shipping in the Gulf of Aden. During the Cold War, the US mantra was: "better to fight the Soviets in Europe than on American soil". America needs NATO just as much as Europe does.

Here is a thought . We spent over 20 years at war and made huge cuts. How many members of British forces were killed or wounded because we did not have the right kit? Now we face collectively a country, Russia, that currently has very low stocks of equipment and stores themselves and likely to get in a worse state. It is low on manpower and taking losses that they are unlikely to recover in the next 20 years. So now we are in a rush to rebuild? Where is the sanity of all this?
