Sun Printing On Fabric

Created for Cruinniú na nÓg 2021, this online Sun Printing workshop comes to you from Mud Island Community Garden in Dublin City. Play along to see how to use solar power to print beautiful botanical designs on fabric. I demonstrate how you can use the sun to make printed fabrics with leaves or other objects, using cotton fabric and acrylic paint. I’ll also explain the science behind the process where capillary action draws the paint from shaded portions of the fabric into the drier, unshaded portions, leaving lightly coloured botanical shapes on a darker coloured background. I'll also show how you can use the printed fabric for clothes or to make useful items such as drawstring bags, pin cushions etc
The workshop is intended to encourage the participants to spend time in nature and outside, and also uses materials that are easily accessible. Please enjoy playing along!

Here's a list of the materials you will need:
• Cotton Fabric/Clothes
• Acrylic Paint (darker shades are better)
• Foliage, Leaves and Flower heads
• Water in a bowl or small bucket
• A flat, non-porous surface to work on (eg. a plastic tablecloth)

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you! If you try the drying part in a more sheltered area, hopefully it will be better. Softer leaves like nasturtiums will also stick to your fabric better so will be less likely to blow away. Hopefully that helps and you get to try it again with some success! 🙂

@@JohnDoe-bj7fb My guess is that glass would impede the natural drying process of the sun. The sun dries the exposed areas of the painted fabric quicker than the area under the leaves and by capillary action, the paint is drawn from under the leaves into the open areas, leaving the leaf area more faint. I think overing with glass might disrupt this process.

The acrylic paints I used are Windsor and Newton and Reeves but any acrylic paint can be used for the technique.
