It's because you need the chains for steering doesn't really matter if your tired spin á bit if you can steer your good to go

The same can happen, if the car is all wheel drive and you only strap up the front 2 wheels. If it is all wheel drive, use of the hand brake could help.

@@raybame5816 Hooked up to a trailer on an icy morning and had to crawl under it with a hammer to knock the brake shoes loose in the drums before I could get on the road.

6:50 did anybody else notice that the car sliding down the hill has already been involved in an accident? The drivers side front is all smashed up. 9:40 oh my , the car is a rear wheel drive yet they put the traction straps/chains on the front wheels. 🤣😵‍💫

Yeah, one powered wheel in a small, rear light pickup doesn't tend to get a lot of traction regardless of the tire!

Living in Canada we are accustomed to driving in snow and ice. However, our roads are somewhat better maintained (most of the time), although there are occasions when you have to say, "forget it, its too bad today"

Yes! Me too! It's a great feeling to say "I dont have to go anywhere. I can stay home." I used to work for the post office and there was no excuse for missing work, certainly not snow.

Almost every vehicle in these videos is being driven at unsafe speeds. And I don’t mean just those involved in skids and collisions.

If the roads are covered with snow & ice, why are the driver's doing the posted speed limit & passing other driver's, how stupid can they be, drive 10-20 be low & don't lock up the brakes, apply them slowly to maintain control, try to Avoid driving up or down hills, unless you live on a hill, then shift your vehicles transmission into a lower gea, All Season tires don't help in the snow, Actual snow tires are best, studded tire really help with traction, if you need chains, use them in Unplowed roads.

my bug locked up a front wheel like that it got full of snow and froze overnight oh well i just drove it to a car wash and drove back and forth until it came undone

I put 1 chain left front for steering and brakes and 1 chain right rear for forward traction and brakes

In icy conditions, with chains on, I have had to put my car in reverse to stop at a light or stop signs. Chains aren't always on the bottom of the tire, so you have to throw it in reverse and give a little gas to stop. If you practice this method, it will save you from a lot of fender benders. By the way, this method to stop should only be done at slow speeds. Like 10 MPH or slower.

As a "grew up in northern (not the U.P., but within 15 miles) Michigan" boy who took his driver's test in a mid February snowstorm 40-odd year ago, I can say with some assurance that, when the road is like that, you want to get your ass *INTO* the snowy lane and solidly established before trying ANYTHING further. The fool's mistake was trying to "diddle around on the edge", where the slippy stuff is the most likely to be. GET INTO THE SNOW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE!! It's got better traction than the packed/partially melted/refrozen stuff at the edges. Losing it on the slick stuff? Unless your'e talking 8+ inches worth, do two things: LIFT your right foot, and GET YOUR ASS INTO THE SNOW! You'll get more "bite" and have a better chance of maintaining and/or recovering control.

Is the guy who got out even helping?

I've been driving with "summer" tires for almost 20 years now. I live in Upper Michigan, where it snows more than almost anywhere else in the country. Somehow, I never really have problems. What you do is, don't drive like you just won the bronze at the Special Olympics. It's really that simple. If you think you need special equipment, 4WD, "winter" tires, you just aren't good at driving and shouldn't be allowed to do it.
