I was just thinking the exact same thing. I used to commute over a fast mountain 'highway' where there are countless gouges in the road, gouges in the cement center dividers, skid marks, and almost daily wrecks, I've seen hellacious wrecks with upside down cars and windshields where heads hit them... I'm so happy I don't have to do that any longer. And if I did I wouuld buy a really good quality cam, they can be a big help.

@@mscir The last 20 years of my job was driving a work van from job to job over 3 counties. Like I said, I was not afraid to drive in it, but I was afraid of the other drivers. Plus getting stuck on an incline etc. I had been very lucky those 20 years. But I was rear ended many times in good road conditions from people tail gating me in my van, and me being in a 1 ton van, they could not see what was happening in front of me and WHAM. Oh ya, in the snow one time a guy coming from a side road could not stop at the sign and went out straight in front on me and I broad sided him. You should have seen the look on his face as my big old van was coming at him. He tried to tell the police that I hit him. (Ummmm yes I did.) If I had not been there, he could have stopped. What? The police told him I had the right of way and he was at fault. Duh.

So true Harold. my driving makes my grandma proud. I also am a rolling road block and I drive a Jeep with mud and snows on it year round. My favorite saying is that I would rather drive in 2 feet of snow than 2 inches of snow. People do not understand how just a little snow can get you in big trouble. Having been a plow driver, I do. Also having done modifications on the Jeeps I have owned I have learned that they are more temperamental to drive in the snow at speed. If I drive like everyone else in the Jeep of my avatar, I will spin like a top. Low and slow I will out climb almost anything out there. PS, I do have chains for all four tires.

@@TheLittlered1961 With my Isuzu Rodeo I've broke trail in 2 foot of snow once in a while but it was happier in less than a foot. But you're right, in a deep rut in snow there's not much skidding going on. And I enjoyed walking beside it in low-low crawl. Not much crazy traffic in the woods. Agreed, many Jeep and other 4-WD drivers shouldn't be allowed on snow or ice..they're not magic carpets.

@@haroldwilkes6608 I must put the brakes on you for a second. "Agreed, many Jeep and other 4-WD drivers shouldn't be allowed on snow or ice..they're not magic carpets." Many in 2-WD vehicles feel the same with winter tires. All of the major pile ups I have seen on youtube involve mostly 2-wd and semi trucks. It is the driver getting over confident no matter what vehicle they are driving. I hate people putting this on the 4 wheel and all wheel drive vehicles. Back in the 80's and 90's I had a Jeep J10 pickup. Had limited slip diff, LSD, on the rear and went to work at 4 am. I tried to put to into 4x4 in the dark. I had unlocked the hubs instead of locking them. It cut through 1' of snow with no problem. It handled like a dream. In another winter we receives 2" of snow that hung around for about 2 weeks. On a corner, on side streets, the rear end went because of the LSD. It is all about the driver knowing the vehicle like you said. Back then I would parallel park it by doing a 180 with the E brake in the snow. I have slowed down since then. Now I just do tight 180's by spinning the wheels in the snow. Yes, being over 60 sucks, LOL. I have a rumble channel, Jeep60. 2 videos on there and going to load more. I am slowing down, but not to much, LOL

My daughter always asks me to drive into the mountains so that she can see snow. I don't have chains or winter tires or any experience with driving in snow... I live in Southern California and grew up in Louisiana! But yesterday we decided it wasn't too bad yet and drove up a little mountain road only to find ourselves just high enough for the roads to be salted and some snow on the yards and houses of one little town. We were fine until the salt ended and we were driving on a thin layer of packed snow. While I was looking for a place to turn (all the side roads looked steep and perilously small) the car gave a tiny slide to one side. I found a place to turn VERY slowly and carefully and let gravity start us back down the hill, taking everything easy, and got lucky enough to A. get back down to the salted areas and B. NOT be in a place with steep drops! There was plenty of ground on both sides. And now I think my daughter will not so quickly ask to drive into the snow in my humble California city ready sedan. And yes, after watching this video I'm going to see how much snow chains cost because the world is unpredictable and you never know...

The chains go on the drive wheels. If you have front wheel drive, they go in front. Rear wheel drive they go in back 4WD, get chains for all 4 tires. Then learn to put them on... in summer. Practice putting them on and taking them off. They need to be tight to the tire. Most chain sets will have a guide for max speed. Go 5 mph slower. You do not want to throw a chain. It can rip the fender off the car.

That school bus driver..."I'm sliding so I'll keep my brakes locked up so as to not regain any control at all." It is it reactionary to stand on your brake pedal during a slide, but that is the last thing you should do. If your wheels are locked up on ice, you have no controll at all. That is the whole reason for the invention of anti-lock brakes.

4WD or AWD is much better for going and somewhat for stability on ice. It doesn't help you stop any better though. With four snow tires on an AWD Subaru I often drove around others stuck on the ice. I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, USA and learned how to drive on snowy, icy hills. Some places you shouldn't try to go, but others you can with the proper car, tires, and skills.

Sure hope I don't need to drive my semi in that crap like I have been for over 4 years. Had many close calls and was towed three times and tugged another four. Thankfully I never damaged anything other than my sanity. Even after all this time, I still get stuck having to backup a complex load a kilometer backwards to get turned around, even in dark snowy conditions, I really don't know how I managed to get out of those sticky situations with hairpin turns and long stretches of ice. Ever encounter a white loveseat in the center of your lane on a dark icy highway? Always expecting the unexpected, still doesn't prepare you for what you will encounter. I used those tire chains on my Semi before. If you are on flat ground they work, but if you are in deep snow, they are useless. If you dig in, best get a large farm tractor to pull you out. Going forwards and backwards spinning out like that VW Golf, only results in what you see, a frustrated driver and a smashed up ride.

If you need "winter tires" you don't need to have a drivers license. I have never wasted money on a second set of tires, because it's not necessary. I live in the UP of Michigan, and I guarantee we get more snow than any of these places. I drive a small 2wd truck, with no "winter tires", guess how many times I have crashed because of snow the last seven years? None. I wish I was a traffic cop. I'd write so many tickets that there's be 50% less drivers in America.

You gonna drive on ice, first thing you need is a full tank of gas (for weight). Weight is critical, especially for pick up trucks with empty beds. Throw some sand bags in the back. Air down the tires some. Everything you do must be slow and smooth. Rely on momentum to get you over slight inclines (not gas pedal). Snow is better traction than ice. Drive a little off the pure ice car tracks if the snow isn't deep. Slow down. 4 wheel drive is about worthless on ice. Go to 2 WD and keep rpms as low as possible (lug) to avoid wheel spin.

4 wheel drive is about worthless on ice IF the tires are bald. Good winter tires on a 4 wheel drive is better than good winter tires on a 2 wheel drive. Still, drive with caution.

Four wheels spinning on ice is four wheels spinning on ice, which is a thought that never occurs to many drivers of SUVs. Ice does not GAF about your four-wheel drive. High center of gravity means sucks in the snow and has a tendency for rollovers. Get a Subaru if you want to be a snow boss.
