Summer in Broome, new free camping rules!

In this episode we stop in Broome for a few weeks to celebrate Christmas and New Years. It has been a while since we were in Broome and it looks like this year sees a number of the free camps that were around Willie Creek and Barred Creek have now been changed to day use only. Such a shame as we had some great memories from these locations. I would love to say we caught lots of fish but unfortunately we fished a lot but caught very little! Just managing expectations.. 😊

    💯 casting net needs to be in your fishing kit! Just get one of those easy cast ones, simple to use and there in nothing better than fresh bait!

    Yeh mate, that pre-wet season sky is just magic. Use to love watching the storms come in over Gove during the build-up. Willie Creek free camp was iconic, same with Barred Creek. To many people sh1tin everywhere and leaving their rubbish!!

    A story for you. We went to the jetty at town beach to watch them fishing and a Aboriginal man had a 200 pound line on a big spool and hooked a whole fish on it and dropped it in and not too long he had a enormous cod on we estimated 2 meters long. Well he and I hung on for dear life as this beast just headed along parallel to the beach. Slowly he pulled line off as it was impossible to stop him from moving. After about 20 minutes the Aboriginal fella just walked off looking for a canoe to go out and get him and left me there with my chest against the fence as this huge fish refused to turn around. Eventually the line broke and was kind of relieved because I was trying walk him along to the shore. They get plenty of fish off the jetty towards the end.

    Oh my god!! Yes, we have heard of some big fish coming out of the water around that jetty. If we didn't already have a freezer full of barra, i would have been out there at night hunting the big ones... but yeh, East Arnhem Land ruined fishing for us. The bar is just too high now... 😀😀🍻🍻👍👍

    We caught a 1.1m Threadfin salmon at 80 mile last May. It was delicious and we were the talk of the cp

    Yup, back in 2021 we saw some big dogs get hawled in at 80 mile. At that exact spot a few years back, we cleaned up on stub nose salmon, but this time.... no joy.. fishing is like golf. You are a legend one day, then fall of the tracks the next. ⛳️ 🐟 🍻👍

    Thats a shame about the free camping.Its going to put a massive amount of pressure on the caravan parks in Broome.What was the Discovery caravan park like ?

  • @VetinaVan

    @VetinaVan

    Yeh massive shame! We have some amazing memories from those campsites. The discovery is amazing, great pool, immaculate camp kitchen, but... we had to lock everything up, Tania lost a towel, and the boys lost thongs. We think over the 2 weeks at least 3-4 nights saw people going through our stuff...

  • @WesternAustraliaNowAndThen

    No surprise that free campsites are being closed down up there. Broome has ALWAYS been a rotten shire when it comes to free camping. We won't go near the place any more due to their attitude.
