It looks nice, but I think that's a huge unnecessary thing. Sure it's traditional, but the fact of the matter is that he sometimes unsheathes his sword, puts it back in his sheath, draws it again, turns it, goes left, left, right, up and down, making some artistic movements and sheathes his sword again... It's unnecessary because it makes no sense in combat

That movement is called Chiburi. It's partly used, like you mentioned, to put the sword in the right orientation to be sheathed, but also to shake any blood residue off the blade. If you notice, he gently places his closed fist on the hilt right after flipping the sword. Samurai would actually hit the hilt with a little more force to for the same purpose of shaking blood off. His is a more ceremonious representation of that as a way to maintain tradition and pay homage to his ancestors. After swords were banned in Japan, Edo period, people started to practice with wooden swords. Some for sport and to keep their technique sharp, which is where Kendo and Battojutsu have their origins. Others did it with more emphasis in spiritual (character) growth and tradition. This is were Iaido comes from.

What's this thing (e.g. in 2:38) with striking the handle? Initially I thought it twists the blade to the edge upwards position so it's ready to be sheathed but it is not the case. Interesting. Is it perhaps to shake off the imaginary blood from the blade?

There are some things which I've been told are bad, but he does. So it is a concious decision for him to do so. I wonder why? e.g. rear foot at 45 angle is supposedly bad, it is supposed to be straight And the way he bows with his sword infront of him, he placed both hands simultaneously, when you're supposed to place the hand closest to the handle last. Just some observations I'm curious about. RIP, wish I could ask him myself

Do you know about things concerning intricate body control? Things like hip positioning with the feet to open up the center mass to drop in an angular way to help the arm fall down without using power, the hip positioned at 45 degrees helps create hanmi (half body) which helps the rotation of the middle part of the body to create the force. Also helps internal weight shifting (this will sound like magic to anyone that hasn't experienced it).I study this stuff a lot to better my aikido

@@vargtro actually, yes I do understand body mechanics. Hence why I am interested in asking why multiple masters across multiple forms of martial arts come to differing conclusions. e.g. foot angle determines your intention to move forward or backward. So masters typically choose to stop this telegraphing by placing feet only at straight, 45degrees and 90. across all martial arts but he uses 5 positions, and I don't understand the use of the new 2. I didn't want to explain in excruciating detail.
