Sylvia Robinson is credited as the driving force behind two landmark singles in the hip hop genre: "Rapper's Delight" (1979) by the Sugarhill Gang, and "The Message" (1982) by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, both of which she produced. Several publications have dubbed her as "The Mother of Hip Hop". At the 11th Annual Rhythm and Blues Awards Gala in 2000, she received a Pioneer Award for her career in singing and for founding Sugarhill Records and in 2022, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Ahmet Ertegun Award category for being a major influence on the creative development of hip-hop's early successes and is the second woman to receive the honor, after Cynthia Weil. Even my father who detested all rap music that followed liked it. I found rap lost the fun, the funk & the creativity around the mid-late 1990's for the most part.

You have to do some U Roy, he's brilliant. If you want some unique British music then go back to the 90's and react to ShyFx and Apache Indian, Original Nuttah. Pretty sure you won't have heard jungle before, it'll have you dancing in your chairs!!!

This is the song that gave HipHop the name HipHop. Wonder Mike started all his rhymes with " Hip Hop, hippy to the hippyty hip hip hop you don't stop"

I first heard this my freshman year in college playing football in our looker room in 1979. We heard this all the time everywhere there was also a 12-inch record that lasted for 15 minutes on the full version of Rappers Delight (Sept. 1979). Right after that there were all kind of Rap groups coming out of New York like Afrikaa Bambaata, Grand Master Flash and The Furious 5 and The Funky 4 + 1 who all came out at the same time or even before SugarHill but had more NY street /club credit.

First rap song I ever heard -- I heard it when it first came out in 1980 while I was in high school. I know... I'm old. Been a rap fan ever since.

Hey guys. Although Sugar Hill hit the hardest with their record back then, the very first rap record was King Tim The Third - Fatback Band.

This song has made way for so many. The word rappers delight is where "RAP came from , HIP HOP , came from. And how many times have you heard hotel motel holiday in in a song. I win a dance contest dancing to this song , just in a club in the 90s I was I my 30s then. And I had to crawl off the stage. 14 mins straight dancing lol 😅😂

This is the beginning. I bought this LP album when it came out took it into my high school band room and played it on the turntable. I have friends that remember me for turning me onto the first rap. I am a 58 year old funky Caucasian. I have always been with the groove, with any music but this hit me strong. Love it. Now listen to some Teddy Pendergrass, please.
