Should have been a draw. You shouldn't take a title by back pedalling unless you have completely out classed your opponent in the process, which Ray did not do. No doubt though, he frustrated Hagler and got under his skin. His speed and movement meant that Hagler spent most of the fight walking after him rather than hitting.

Hagler was really at a loss for making himself appear the victor. Sometimes that is all you need to get people to think you're the winner; which Leonard achieved. I watched the Modern Martial Artist channel where he showed that some of Leonard's flurries wasn't actually connecting, but it looked cool and played favorably in the judges' scoring, whereas Hagler had many more clean shots and Leonard was consciously making it look like he was unaffected.

I just wish these interviewers would do some research , get their facts right , and stop staying , MMH just left the Sport of Boxing , a bitter man because of this fight , he was certainly bitter , but not a quitter . Just to clear some things up , Hagler retired on the 13th of June , 1988 , a full 14 months after their fight , Leonard on the other hand , retired 6 weeks later for the 3rd time , May 1987 . Haglers people , the Petronellis , have told how he had them pestered to try get a rematch but despite many attempts , Leonard's people wouldn't even answer their calls . Just 1 month after Hagler retired , having exhausted all avenues for a rematch , Leonard came back out of retirement , July 1988 , to say he was fighting Donny Lalonde later that year . A rematch between the 2 was the only fight that was talked about during this period , the fact it never happened , lays at Ray's door . Two total Legends of the Sport , RIP Champ 🥊🥊

Hagler was talking about coming outa retirement in a ringside interview alongside Leonard after the Hearns vs Roldan fight in 1987. The words came outa his own mouth, the video is on Top Ranks channel. He just didnt officially announce it until 88. Whgat do you want from Leonard, he isnt Haglers sugar Daddy. He said he was coming back for one fight after 5 years laid up on the sofa & thats what he did, he kept his word.... OOOHH THA SHAME !! Leonard offered Hagler a rematch but Hagler decided to stay retired. LaLonde was a reigning LHW Champ, yer talking about him like he was a nobody. When did Hagler offer to move up n fight a LHW Champ like Hearns & Leonard did ? When did Hagler rematch Duran & Hearns like Leonard did ? When did Hagler fight Benitez like Duran, Hearns & Leonard did ? Hagler wanted it handed to him on a plate & when he got it he couldnt take it.

@@SPIDERM0OSE Hi Spidermouse , thanks for your comments and you make some brilliant points but obvious , we'll disagree on some and agree on others . You are right , Leonard did offer Hagler a rematch but that was in 1990 , it was a token gesture and he knew deep down , he wasn't going take him up , my whole point is , there was no offers from their fight in 87 , to 88 , when Hagler officially retired , he'd remained in training camp as if he was still active , all that time in the hope of a rematch that never came , Goody Petronelli even quoted , ' They , Leonard's people , wouldn't even answer the phone ' . I never spoke of Donny Lalonde as if he was a nobody but I have said that he was in a lesser Class than Leonard and Hagler for sure but there is a couple of things you may not be aware of , they fought for 2 Titles that night , Donny's 175lbs LHW Title and the newly added SMW 168lbs Title that was introduced to the WBC but the fight was actually fought at 168 lbs , a massive disadvantage to Donny's chances as he had to boil down to that weight and considering he floored Leonard early on , just wonder if Leonard could recover if he was hit by a LHW but ultimately , Leonard won that fight because his Class shone through and in fairness to him , he showed great Character , Guts , Bravery and Skill , to win . 🥊🥊

@@SPIDERM0OSE I do agree with you about Hagler's stance of remaining at MW to a degree but unfortunately for him , the SMW 168lbs Division , wasn't really a Legitimate Division until just after he'd retired after all , Leonard became the first WBC SMW Champion , after he beat Donny . I'm only going on my own opinion here but for me anyway , with no proper Division between MW and LHW in his Career , he probably thought it best to stay there rather than move up to LHW and certainly no point in moving down and also , the MW Division along with the HW Division , are Classed as being the ' Blue Ribboned ' Divisions of the Sport . As things turned out , the SMW Division has been great especially during the 90s and for me , if Hagler was in his Prime then , he Unifies that Division and becomes Undisputed .🥊🥊

Hagler never had Ray in trouble, so Hagler comes in hits hits, hits,\. Ray takes it, throws his fast combination leaves and boxes again. Ray made Hagler look average. And Ray landed some shots so being that neither boxer was in trouble that whole fight? When everyone thought Hagler was going to destroy him? Great fighter but he avoided Aaron Pryor when there was a time that fight should have been done, made sure of an immediate rematch with Duran knowing he'd be out of shape, took his sweet time (8 years) to give Hearns a rematch and would not grant Hagler a rematch when he so badly deserved one. Floyd Mayweather would call that "smart decisions". Fight fans call it ducking and diving.

Okay Irene Payne, now that you know what Google is, you can go and research. Brilliant!! You will find out that the Sugar man actually offered Aaron Pryor 500k for a fight, Aaron declined saying it wasn't enough money despite his biggest pay at the time was 50k, still the Sugar man went on and offered 750k, Aaron still declined. All this in 1980 before any injury or problem from any of the two guys. Ah Aaron Pryor also refused 750k from Duran. Weird right, the most ducked and fearless man on the history of the sport refused two of his biggest fights he could have ever got.
