Sugar Ray Leonard at his absolute best! This is one of his greatest performances as he learned from his mistakes in the Brawl in Montreal and used his superior speed / movement to outbox and befuddle Duran. 2 of the greatest of all time but on this night Leonard was tactically perfect and completely dominated a P4P legend.

SRL has one of the most impressive resumes in boxing history! He beat Hearns, Benitez, Duran, Hagler, Kalule. He fooled the public by acting like a golden boy, he was an absolute savage in that ring!

Leonard was in a total flow state that night, just everything was on point. Not to mention it was Duran who was in front of him! The bolo punch was also a thing of beauty!

One of my father’s favorite boxers. Leonard was smart, tactical, charismatic and knew how to fight if it came down to it.

I miss those days of the 80s when fighters didn’t duck anyone and fought each other in their prime

Sugar Ray Leonard’s skill was EXTRAORDINARY…His mobility, evasiveness , footwork, broken rhythm and ability to see openings fast and to go through them was unmatched…This was the ‘No mas ‘ (no more) fight with Duran. Duran was a really aggressive animal rugged fighter but Sugar Ray just never let him use it…He outpointed him in skill and in the end just frustrated Duran to the point of driving him mad to quit because he was making him look so silly in missing that it was humiliating for him. Leonard messed with him psychologically as well as tactically.

He broke Duran DOWN..mentally as well as physically! Duran had gone EIGHT YEARS without a loss and had won over FIFTY FIGHTS IN A ROW until Ray beat him, so this was a historic accomplishment. I saw the fight live (on pay per view) back in 1980 and when Duran said those famous words “no mas” and quit, the crowd was in total disbelief. That (along with his first fight with Thomas Hearns) was Sugar Ray’s greatest fight. I believe that he was the greatest welterweight of all time!

Leonard had 2 things really working for him in the rematch. 1) The ring was HUGE--21 X 21--(that's a VERY large ring--perfect for Sugar Ray to utilize his speed and movement.) 2) Duran blew up to almost 200 lbs. after the first fight and had about 2 and 1/2 months to get down to 147, which HAD to have sapped a lot of his energy. No excuses though--Leonard stayed in top shape--Duran let himself go--that's entirely on him and his management (or lack thereof.)

My father used to force us to watch every sugar ray fight. He'd sit us kids down in front of the TV and say, watch this, this is superior boxing. He made us watch it as if it was going to matter to every part of our life. We just had to watch sugar ray in his prime as part of our upbringing.
