+Abyssal Nocturnus tbh i've listened to this song like ten times already today. it blows me away that a human could create this. i can't even communicate how i feel about this song because it transcends me.

To all the new people here, this song talks about Sufjan regretting not letting himself grieve his mother properly. He uses various metaphors to depict his depression. However there is hope in the new generation, which is symbolized by his brother's daughter and the way the music turns happier at the end. "Illumination"!

I didn't grieve my dad properly when he died 6 years ago. Actually i never had the chance. Between taking care of ny mom and lil sister, who was only in 5th standard, i was lost in trying to be strong for them. I guess i can relate to this song. Life's strange and weird

@@winterbearbonu when you're gay it's harder to have your own kids, but when your siblings have kids you get a lot of joy, it makes you really happy and removes some of the sadness you might have over the limitations of having your own kids. Think this is what they meant. In the song Sufjan is going on about positive and good things he wants to focus on and his niece is one of them. Gay aunts and uncles all over the world see their nieces and nephews as that, something beautiful and illuminating to focus on and be grateful for. Can't speak for OP, but I think that covers it, coming from a childless bisexual uncle.

The song refrain “my black shroud” resonates with me so much. I’ve been carrying a lot of emotional pain since childhood which I have kept hidden. This song really captures the ramifications of trauma at a young age. But it also implores us to grow as adults by feeling the pain we previously covered…with our shrouds…and to move forward with grace.

The lyrics are a true masterpiece. But am I the only one who loves Sufjan Stevens because you can put your own mind, your own feelings directly on his musics ? I'm French, so it happens sometimes (often) that I just don't understand the lyrics. But then it becomes even better. It becomes incredible. Because this is not Sufjan who is talking, this is actually me, listening to the song and putting my own thoughts in it. I don't know, never felt that way with any other music than Sufjan's. And I love it. And this album is going to be damn good.

"Don't back down. Concentrate on seeing...." I mean it's not like his lyrics are super deep or anything, but man I get choked up whenever I hear this line in particular. If you have ever suffered from depression, you understand how hard it can be to focus on the good in life. However, concentrating on the little things in life that bring joy is critical if you're trying to pick yourself up from a dark time in your life and ultimately move on from the past. Sufjan just has an amazing ability to convey the emotions he feels to his listeners with simple, yet beautiful lyrics and fitting music so that they can easily empathize with him.

Carrie and Lowell is one of those albums that's rare today, a true album that is more than the sum of its parts. Sufjan has created a cohesive work with a consistent theme, more than just a collection of beautiful songs but rather all variations of his theme of loss and grief. The songs are meant to be listened to one after another, not separately. This is a true work of art and I only wish I owned it on vinyl. And yes, any of us who have lost someone close to us knows the feeling of not knowing how to grieve. I still can't do it after my husband's death or my sister's death. Maybe some day. I loved his music since the movie "Call me by your name". This is the kind of music i feel connected with all my heart. It is extraordinarily beautiful and i love the fact that it evokes and makes me feel my deepest feeling or the fact that it is able to make me feel!! I believe every soul listening to this kind of music feels the same. One night you just want to close your eyes and feel this song and some nights you want to feel what others felt through this music and know about their experiences, hear the hearts of people miles and miles away from you. Listening to the music while scrolling through the compliments towards every wonderful music and realizing how connected we are to share our melancholy and blissfulness makes me extremely delightful. P.S:- i believe there are souls like me who like to read about the music and the stories and the emotions and so on.. It is very nice of people to mention the person who introduced this song to them but it'll be eminently nice of you all to also acknowledge the music.

Never heard of Jimin until now, but if he manages to get more people in love with this song (and Sufjan Stevens in general), then good on him!

This song in particular got me through my mother's death in 2020. She hadn't talked to me in eight years before she died. My sister sent me a photo of her the day before she passed. She looked the same as I always remembered her. When she was gone, the physical pain was unexplainable. I never felt anything like it. I wish she had loved me as I needed her to. I wish I had been there with her.💔💔💔💔

As a mom who left my kids with my mother in law due to mental illness after their father passed.. I have no doubt she loved and loves you so very deeply. I believed all this time that they would be better off forgetting I ever existed. I felt like a garbage human because I struggle with something as simple as everyday function; some days getting out of bed seems to much. I felt I would steal their happiness from them. I didn't feel I deserved to be in their life. I regret it with every breath I take. The pain never really stops... I know your mom didn't go a day or an hour without thinking of you. I wish I could hug you. Please remember she was human and therefore terribly flawed like we all are. My father left me behind the same when I was little, and as I got to know him as an adult, I realized he struggled with alcoholism and feelings of depression and worthlessness, too. I wish I could take the pain away from you. I wish I could take it away from my babies. They are everything, everything... everything to me. I'm sure that's not easy to believe. But I've never known a moments peace since I lost them. I wake up in a cold sweat, my heart breaking, wishing I could just hold them, and take it all away. I have a phrase that's gotten me through some of the most difficult times in my life, I thought you'd like to hear it. "Perfer et obdura, dolor hic tibi proderit olim" --Ovid It means, Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you. And it will be. You will love more deeply. You will be more empathetic. You will see others suffering, and you'll be better at easing it. It's a small consolation, to be sure. But there's a silver lining to even the worst things. Be at peace. I wish you all the happiness and kindness in the world. You should never have had to feel this way, but please remember, you were likely loved more than you can imagine.

I absolutely fell in love with Sufjan's music and this song and then I come to the video and see that Jimin recommended this... Boy got taste 💜

This is my 'go-to' song for triggering a mood I only indulge when I need to feel deeply but am centered enough to get back the neutral without too much work. It's a gorgeous piece of work.

the comment section talking about how Jimin bring them here actually made me kinda sad, Sufjan has been always a great singer, at least please appreciate and talk about how this song make you feel, not just who brings who here. This is such a great song, the lyric is so deep, it's like the death of ourself and desires we couldn't make into reality. Feel this song and maybe you'll understand why Jimin likes this song, not just because of it pleasing for the ear.

I agree, I don't like fans who go just cuz Jimin recommended it. He introduced it to me but I love this song, I've been listening to it nonstop and the lyrics as well as the song itself are beautiful and emotional, and I don't want that taken away by fans who don't care enough to treat it like it's worth. @@mynameis8371 it's just irritating bc that's a shallow gesture and reflects how that part of the industry works (e.g., clicks and views). i see a lot of comments from these people talking about how "armies" elevated the view count as if that was an inherently good thing. i guess if we're talking about kpop, where things are constantly measured on its ability to go viral, that might be an important factor, but that just completely alienates and strips this song of all its intimacy. if anything, the net effect of all these kpop stans in chat have ruined the image of their beloved group. you guys are fucking annoying.

Considering the content of this song, it's straight up disrespectful. Usually I don't care when people do that shit, but this is a song about an extremely sensitive topic. It is extremely inappropriate and I'm actually pissed off at the level of insensitivity. I'm sure whoever tf Jimin is wouldn't appreciate his fans disrespecting the music he recommended.

Where you hear it?

To me this song is about coming to terms with death and the idea that it will defeat you one day and you're not invincible. However, the only way to beat death is through family. We continue on. Should have known better than to forget that. Family is forever, it's how we're here.

I regret not exploring all of his creations and kept listening to Mystery of Love and 4th of July. This is such a masterpiece ❤️

I listened to this constantly after my fathers death last year.. he was one of the few people I truly bonded with after I was put up for adoption. Cancer is an ugly disease. But this song basically encompassed every feeling I had during that time.. and still to this day, it ebbs and flows.

People (assuming mostly girls and women) who are here because Jimin mentioned it: Rock on. His music is as valid as anyone else's and likewise you are, as his fans. There a nauseating tendency for things that appeal to women and girls to get shat on by assholes everywhere and I don't want to do that now. I don't know who Jimin is, but I'm glad he shares the music he likes with you and that it has brought you here. Perhaps I'll check him out and I hope you'll keep listening to Sufjan who is also rad and kinda hot. However... You've made a nuisance of yourselves by posting hundreds of messages just asking if everyone else got here because of Jimin. There are no rules about KZread etiquette or anything, but consider how annoying it would be if a zillion people suddenly descended on one of his videos and essentially pushed all of you out of the comments, such that you have to scroll way, way, WAY down to get to a comment that even mentions the actual song referred to in the video. New BTS fan here, and I 100% agree. And sadly because a large enough portion of the fanbase does stuff like this which annoy tf out of everyone else, it backfires on them because by association people start hating on the artist/music group (like what you said - things a large portion of women & girls like *DO* get hugely mocked & hated by others simply because that thing's biggest fanbase are girls/women). Which is sad because the BTS guys are genuinely good people who are talented, intelligent, caring individuals who believe in making the world a better place not just through music, but supporting charities & other good causes, and being open & honest about their own struggles (which helps others who struggle with the same things). BTS deserves to be given a real chance even if a lot of the most vocal portion of their own fanbase puts a lot of people off from them (it's usually the most vocal younger demographics under the age of 18, the rest of their fanbase is one of the hugest ranges of age & demographics I've seen so far for a music group).

Anyone commenting about Jimin-welcome! Look into the whole album. It’s about Sufjan and his struggle with losing his estranged mother. One of the best albums released in the past decade.

i've been a fan of him for three years and i'm still so affected by his music. his songs have the perfect mix of making me feel feel really sad and really anxious, but also so, so calm, and it's just - it's just wonderful. his songs are so wonderful.

How the hell did I miss this masterpiece of acoustic artistry? 😳 this is beautiful, the finest music comes from life experiences and experiencing sadness to appreciate the little things so much more ✅

The second part of the song is one of the best pieces of songwriting i ever heard... Hope when it is found in the dark is the brightest energy we have.

What can I say about Sufjan Stevens and his delightful songs that hasn't been said before? Pure and raw emotion. This one song in particular takes me back to the summer of 2018. I didn't even know who Sufjan was at that time. I was staying with my grandparents and younger cousin in a small villa in a beautiful village in Spain. Everyday my cousin and I would go swimming to a nearby river in the middle of nature where the sunlight was always shining on the water. We would spend hours there just chilling, sharing our thoughts or playing cards. After lunchtime we'd go visit a boy and he'd give us cherries he cultivated. I ended up falling in love with him. When the sun started to go down, my cousin and I would go for a walk around the village and would get lost in its narrow streets. But we didn't care, because we were having so much fun and in the end we always found the way back home. I know the lyrics of this song have nothing to do with my summer holidays. But there's just something about it that takes me back to that happy time, when I didn't have a care in the world. And to this day, I still remember everything about it. I even remember how I felt the first time I saw that boy. All of that is still kept in my heart as a warm memory, and I doubt I will ever forget about it. I never write this kind of comments, but Sufjan's song inspired me in a way I can't explain. It's truly a masterpiece. Hope everyone is safe and having a good day.

I found Sufjan about a month ago after looking through the iTunes free download section. I saw the song "I Should Have Known Better" and I thought "eh, I'll give it a shot" and OH MY GOD. I never thought music could be so beautiful, and Sufjan speaks not only from his heart, but from mine.

Ugh, i am so in love with this. I can only imagine what the album is going to be like.

I remember leaving from high school after a long tiring day, putting my headphones on and listening to this song. Sufjans songs made me create my own little bubble after trying to hold up a mask the whole day. He made me relax and i could escape into my own world. A couple-ish or so years later I saw 'Call me by your name' in the movie theaters and I was so excited to see him in the opening credits. So happy that new people are finding his songs! Sufjan is truly remarkable artist and I am sure his songs are touching each and everyone's soul in some kind of way and makes them feel something deeply in their heart 💕

One of those songs that crumbles your heart giving you the finest joy at the same time. Pure gold.

I arrived home 5:05 minutes ago and I saw a notification saying asthmatic kitty had posted a new video... Oh my God, I wasn't expecting this. This song is absolutely perfect, I can't describe what I feel listening to it. Sufjan, thanks for being a genius.
