LYRICS:
Shall we beat this or celebrate it?
You’re not the one to talk things through
You checked your text while I masturbated
Manelich, I feel so used
Found myself on Spencer’s Butte
Traced your shadow with my shoe
Empty outline changed my view
Now all of me thinks less of you
On the sheet I see your horizon
All of me pressed onto you
But in this light you look like Poseidon
I’m just a ghost you walk right through
Saw myself on Spencer’s Butte
Landscape changed my point of view
Revelation may come true
Now all of me thinks less of you
(All of me wants all of you)

The last bit starting at 3:08 and ending song, gut punches me and brings me to tears. Sounds like the something you’d hear at a funeral. I feel that bit captures life after a relationship. Having to return to a life without someone and feeling that emptiness. It’s sitting at home on the weekend looking around and noticing your surroundings may look the same but somehow looks darker than it used to. The color and life feels gone.

Why did you come into my life Sufjan!? Your music came in like a film score throughout these past few months. Ever since your performance of Mystery of Love I went through one emotional rollercoaster I can never truly forget. I’m now weak and pretty much empty and my emotions are so dry that its unsupportable for anyone around me. Thanks Sufjan for your music was The Only Thing why I continued at all. It was the desire of sharing my life with my old childhood friend and tell him how much he still means to me. Ever since I listened to The Predatory Wasps Of The Palisades Are Out To Get Us I had the urge to show your music to him. We were friends and for a small time we were in love. It’s all gone now. I Should’ve Known Better but as I type this my childish fondness of him still circulates in my head. He was my Blue Bucket of Gold on New Years 2018 this was the year all about him. Now I lay alone with nothing. Still contemplating in ending it all, I just want to feel that love he offered to me. An embrace that no other person has ever offered. Sorry for this long winded writing but to finish it all off I would just love to repeat those last lines from Eugene, “now I’m drunk and afraid wishing the world would go away what’s the point of singing songs, if they never even hear you”.

What a absolute gorgeous masterpiece of an album - It's true art in it's purest form. I'm tempted to label it as indie/folk but it's just art in my opinion when think about it - never mind the labels and genres. As time passes this will become a classic and a defining album from the decade we are in, just wait and see. In the future we will reminiscene, sentimentally, the time when this album came out and what it meant for us as a generation. The melancholic, delicate, reflective music Sufjan Stevens makes are heartbreaking. And dare I say, CARRIE & LOWELL is in my opinion without a doubt his best work, just perfect. Just as some older folks feel nostalgic about the music of the past, 60s, 70s and 80s we will feel the same about this. This album will stand out as a influential and (in time) legendary piece of art - a musical milestone of the 2010's! Enough said, I apologize for the rambling.

i know this whole album portrays his relationship with his mother and her passing but i also view this album as a way to cope with my lover. no, we are not together but she is my first real love and she is a confirmation to my sexuality. there are days i feel so close to her that i wanna feel her touch, feel everything she feels in those moments. i am very bad at expressing how i feel at any times and i don't strictly open up to people. i want her to love me. i said i liked her to my best friend and i am so disappointed in myself that i did. i hate myself for that i wish they never knew. they probably think i just like her, but i can imagine hee touch in me, i can imagine us looking into our eyes and finding our future in them. fuck. im in love. all of me wants all of you" as Sufjan said, as i wanna say to her one day.

when we're in love the deep desire to be close can be in conflict with our fear of it. Don't hate yourself for acting on either of those feelings, just recognise them (as you are, by saying it). To be in love is to be vulnerable - but then so often vulnerability inspires the same in another. If you're feeling that way, she definitely could be too. Good luck x

I'm sorry, I can see some kind of ressemblance, but it's nowhere close; Stevens has a depth, an intimate knowledge of the Universal that misses from Smith. Steven's music is incredibly intimate and delicate without ever being relatable other than in the emotional highway it connects to the listener's interiority. It's agnostically spiritual, which is the boldness you mention when speaking of an answer to a question. It's undeniably unique, in every way, and to compare it would be like comparing the Earth to any other planet in our solar system: it's impossible, not even remotely, because of the intricate nature of Earth, not because it's special.

Ohh my, this is such a perfect idea!!! :0 Damn, now I can't get rid off of this thought! D'x This song would be perfect for that movie, my heart is already bleeding bc this train ran away. But maybe for the sequel, ohhh what I would not give if this song would be in it!!! * . *

Am I correct in thinking that Manelich is a man's name? Magnificent song, by the way. Amazing how Sufjan is able to tell a heartbreaking story just by describing an isolated incident in a single verse. The build at the end repeating that simple seven-note melody is just as powerful as the lyrics that preceded it.

Dimitri Smith I don't know what's "correct," but männlich is German for male/masculine, and I'm assuming he's using that.

Dimitri Smith I'm pretty sure Sufjan is homosexual, not that it really matters. He references male lovers in numerous songs.

***** Thank you for doing it, I was lazy to backtrack his work to find the songs. I mean, it could be impersonal, playing the gender role thing, but his songs seem so personal to see it otherwise.

***** DttB and The Owl are biblical references. The predatory wasp I think is more just friendship, the "we were in love" is about being friends, he was like, 9 at the time that the storoy happened so... Impossible Soul sounds like a female lover, IMO. If I don't recall I think he's said he isn't homo

Shall we beat this or celebrate it? You're not the one to talk things through You checked your texts while I masturbated Manelich, I feel so used Found myself on Spencer's Butte Traced your shadow with my shoe Empty outline changed my view Now all of me thinks less of you On the sheet I see your horizon All of me pressed onto you But in this light you look like Poseidon I'm just a ghost you walk right through Saw myself on Spencer's Butte (All of me wants all of you) Landscape changed my point of view (All of me wants all of you) Revelation may come true (All of me wants all of you) Now all of me thinks less of you (All of me wants all of you) (All of me wants all of you) (All of me wants all of you) (All of me wants all of you) (All of me wants all of you)
