Sucked Into an Oil Pipe - The Paria Diving Incident | Xeno Reacts

Ойын-сауық

On February 25 of 2022, a team of five divers were tasked with maintenance work on a dormant underwater pipeline in Trinidad and Tobago. The five divers ended up being sucked into the narrow oil pipe. Four of the five divers never returned. Xeno reacts to ‪@Storified1‬'s video about this tragic incident.

I'm from Trinidad. To date there has been no arrests made or any compensation to any of the victim's families. News about this is constantly suppressed by almost all politicians, since many of the business heads are friends of said politicians. I never really expected this story to be picked up outside Trinidad, much less Xeno but I hope it gets more eyes so something could be done.

I seen alot of people say that there was no way to rescue them before death. Obviously I'm cluless since Im not from there or know engineering of pipes enough to make a claim. But is that true? No doubt the company is evil, but could they really have been saved given their situation + air pressure that would change when opened up+

Even though it’s not his fault at all, he feels responsible because he was the one all of them agreed to send alone to escape and get help. He was their last and only hope of maybe surviving, and even though he escaped and clearly did so fast enough to get help before they died, they still didn’t survive. And now he has to live with that. Even if he understands that really it wasn’t his fault.

Im from Jamaica and I can tell you the Caribbean is rife with corruption and this does not surprise me for a second. The people here are a resource and nothing more when it comes to big companies and the govt. It breaks my heart because you just know that you are hardly valued as a person in some instances and a lot of people are completely desensitized to it at this point. Hearing the men talking through it at the very end have me bawling like a baby, especially when he said god is good.

Cutting the pipe wouldn't have worked. Due to the pressure differential the men trapped inside would've likely been crushed or suffer further injuries. Additionally it would cause a massive oil spill in the harbor. At the same time, the fact no strategy was even attempted is disgusting.

how would you open the pipe tho? Wielding into it? Igniting oil residues and it takes a while to cut open a large enough space to pull people out while water is coming in and taken time to provide oxigen. Its an nasty scenario but i doubt they could have been saved tbh.

They could've rescued them yet they chose not to...they knew they were down there but after a couple of days they decided to retrieve their bodies...like what sense does that make!? While I get those saying 'They should have just cut the pipe and didn't cause of greed' there is also something to keep in mind. Similar to how this incident started due to pressure differences, cutting into the pipe would have caused similar issues. The only real way they could have saved these men was to have someone go in with a tow line back to where they were so that equipment could have been pulled down to them to wear then pull then back out. This could have resulted in them being saved, but because they were stopped from doing anything it made it difficult for them to do anything. That is where the greed came into the equation - is by doing nothing instead of doing something. Sadly, this is possibly a tale that while it may remain fresh in memories for years to come, and Chris will suffer with those memories the rest of his life, that no one will be legally or financially held liable for the death of those men due to the location of this accident. Too many places are still able to sweep things like this under the rug as an unfortunate occurrence and move on even in this day and age.
