Thank you audioholic for recommending two subwoofers to balance bass sound across the room. Before when I had one sub placed at the front, it was too punchy when listening at the front, too boomy at the back and null at the middle. I did try switching phase but no matter the value it sounded the same. But when I placed second sub in my room, I realised phase control for both subs now makes a difference. My room is approximately 10 foot squared and currently placed two subs at the front and back. What I do for phase is first set both sub to zero phase. Then I listen at the front, middle and back. If there is punchy bass at front and back, and null at the middle, set first sub phase from 0 to 180. Then have a listen again. All front, middle and back should now have balanced response. If bass already sound smooth across the room, try switching first sub phase to 180 and hear whether it creates punchy bass at front & back with null at middle. In that case switch back to 0 and leave it. If bass sound quite smooth and switching phase from 0 to 180 didn't make much difference, switch the second sub phase to 90, then go back to first sub and try listening at both phase 0 and 180. I hope this helps for anyone with dual subs and phase control. Note that I only did in my 10 foot squared room and unsure if same solution can work at rectangle or asymmetric room.

Nice, thanks for the hint on the subwoofer level, I used to set the gain level on the subwoofer to the 12 0 clock position and have audyssey run through to - I wasn't much concerned with the subwoofer level audyssey setted. After watching your video, I looked at the level - and it was -10 db, So I adjusted the gain on subwoofer and managed to get back to -3 db :) and woohoo, my bass levels are way much better now :) - thanks guys

Hi Gene, I am new to Audioholics, great videos, very informative, thanks for doing what you do. Setting up a new home theatre this fall. My room is 24X16X8. From everything I have read or viewed, 2 subs are better than 1, and 4 subs are better than 2. The more subs the easier it is to eq the room and eliminate dead zones. My theater front end will be the PSB Imagine T3 Towers and Imagine C3 Center Channel. All other speakers in the setup will be PSB speakers. When it comes to Subs I am looking to go with either two SVS Ultra PB 1600, or 4 PSB Sub-series 450. The theatre will be a split of 60 % music listening- 40 % Home theatre. All the reviews indicate the two SVS Subs would do a great job below 20HZ whereas the PSB Subs would lack in this area. Having 4 PSB Subs would provide a great presence, but would their be a noticeable difference in performance. All thing equal what would you recommend?

Good day guy. Love your show. To comment on on what I found that works for setting up subwoofers (jbl sub 150, Tannoy ts8, Wharfdale whs10e, amp Yamaha rxa 1050): setting amp subwoofer gain to about minus halfway (-5 in rxa1050) and just around 60% power on subwoofer amp. Tried this with all subwoofers and it works extremely well. It also works for different amplifiers as well (tried on Marantz sr5007). What this setting does is use the signal only from the amp and uses the subwoofer amp to adjust volume. This opposes having a high gain in the amp and a medium gain in the subwoofer. To summarize, the lfe on amp is used only for the signal (not a highly amplified signal) and the subwoofer amp generates volume. The subwoofer is not amplifying an already (highly) amplified signal. Just to add that at minus halfway, sub doesn't necessarily cut off.

You guys helped me out with this video. I have a 25+ year old dbx 15inch 250watt floor subwoofer, and just recently the amplifier that went with the sub finally had enough. So now my classic sub cant connect to my pioneer elite receiver because the sub has speaker wire instead of today's plug-ins. So I was able to find a subwoofer amplifier that helped but still after all connecting to amp and receiver, my sub was still popping in and out, until you show to connect the lfe on the amp to the sub ports to the receiver, all is golden now, the subwoofer is a classic and it still shakes and rattles the house

Hi, Gene, I improved sound of my PSB 6i subwoofer a lot simply by putting a marble plate (15x17 inch) on top of the subwoofer. It improved the boominess a lot. My sub was tested by Sound&Vision to be a good sub to begin with. The improvement cab easily heard. I have no way to measure it. What you said makes a lot of sense the sub woofer is better at producing lower frequencies than the speakers and speakers at better at producing the mids and the high frequencies. Tbh I thought I knew best as I have been into cinema sound since the mid 90's and didn't want to deprive my speakers of the lower frequency. Its never sounded better. More powerful sound and damn the channel separation sounds better than ever too. Hats off. Thanks! P. S I have mordaunt short mezzo range and my woofer sounds even better too and just a really nice balance.

Hi guys. I've had my gear a long time now. It's been with me through three properties, so is quite dated now, but still works well enough. I probably need to set it up again. I have a Yamaha DSP AX2 amp and a Paradigm servo X15 subwoofer, which is an absolute monster. The sub comes with a separate cross over unit which has phase, cut off, and level control knobs. I have always set the cut off at 80hz. Are you saying this is wrong and works against the amps LLF output? Should I be setting this up at max and letting the amp decide what frequencies go to the sub? Cheers guy's.

I've heard you say set them all to small and set the crossovers to 80Hz a bunch of times, but what does setting them to small actually do? What is the receiver actually doing with the low frequencies and how does it tie in with LFE + Main? I understand LFE, but not sure what's actually happening when you change the speaker size setting. On an older Denon I had, it would automatically set the crossover and send all the low frequencies to the sub when they were set to small, but it didn't have crossover settings in the menu. With the ability to set the crossovers separately what does the size setting accomplish? Thanks for all the great informational videos!

I've literally been trying different stuff with my subwoofer for like 3/4 years now. Done every trick from every video, placed it everywhere in the room. But I just can't get that damm sound I want from it. It always sounds so uneven. In some parts (for exempel a movie) I can't hear anything from my subwoofer, not even a little. But in other parts it feels like it's going to blow up. I never get that smooth bass that feels like it covers everything, from voices, to music, to the gun and explosion sounds. And sub and speaker are actually pretty decent. I've heard them in action by others and it sounds great (almost the same space as the room I use it in). Maybe one day I wil get that sweet, sweet sound!

I know this might be the wrong kinda video but it does have to do with base at low frequency optimization. I have an old pair of Pioneer Elite TZ-7s from the early 90s, is there a way to base manage the base of those speakers to optimize their base response to the best possible level? The specs rate the speakers to 20hz but I have never been able to test them to see how low they can really go though. I have them on a basic set up using an older STR-DB840 as a pre-amp and a Pioneer SX-V90 as the power amplifier.

I have a Velodyne Sub with High Level Speaker In/Out. I have speaker cables going from amplifier to the sub's High Level Speaker In (banana plugs both ends) and using the sub's Speaker Outputs to connect to my speakers. Is there any advantage in doing a parallel connection from amp to sub and speakers? Cheers.

I have two DEF tech powered towers. Is it OK to use another separate sub woofer. If so, should I do the sub woofer crawl the same way?

Do you need to use the left and right inputs? I’m using a y-splitter on my subs currently, is this a good or bad thing?

I have a Klipsch SPL-120 it has positive and negative analog inputs. My amplifier has only a single pre out analog female receiver. Should I only do a single analog cable to my subwoofer into the left channel only, or do a Y splitter that utilities positive and negative inputs on the sub and only the single sub pre out on the amp? Any recommendations on cable brand would be appreciated as well.

80 is standard for surround highs..... what hz do you set your av receiver on for line in bypass (white and red) on sub....10 in paradigm

Also, consider your sub's frequency response relative to your other speakers. Some smaller subs only go down to the mid 30's hz, which may be on par with your stereo mains in a surround system. If the sub has similar bass extension to other speakers present, the Audioholic may want to consider running all 3, or just 2, or just 1 depending on how much bass energy their tastes desire and their acoustics support. Typically more subs are better as they give better seat to seat consistency, and obviously the solution is to upgrade the sub to have extension over the full bandwidth. But if they're all have similar extension, a well crafted floor standing speaker will have a pretty smooth crossover, and adding in a solo woofer to the party may go totally cool-aid man on your low end. :D OH YEAH!

I'm trying to run two powered subwoofers from one line out. The subs don't have line outs. Is my best option to use a Y cable and hook them up to the LFE in? Thanks for the video!

I want to connect a powered subwoofer to my desktop, MB: Gigabyte GA-X99-Phoenix SLI (rev. 1.0). The MB has 115dB SNR HD Audio with Built-in Rear Audio Amplifier. The connector for the subwoofer is a 3.5mm connection. What type of wiring and connection do you suggest? Stereo 3.5mm or Mono 3.5mm to a RCA subwoofer cable?
