I loved how extremely 90's this felt. The bad acting and not great resolution just added to the atmosphere of it.

Hey Graham. I must say that I unexpectedly adored this film far more than I expected. Sure it was raw and low budget & some of the performances were a bit stilted at times but boy could you just feel the sincerity and dedication from Penelope Spheeris for the whole project. The opening scene and woman getting her clothes ripped off at the club were pretty unnecessarily exploitative but as Spheeris explains in the extras she was compelled to add these by Roger Corman. I absolutely sympathised with all the motley family and was completely absorbed by their daily plight. Despite some obvious and unsubtle story development I really connected with the honesty of this movie & the Characters and really loved it. I’d definitely go back and revisit it again. I was gutted that no one bothered to try and interview more of the cast for additional features but the interviews with Spheeris the director were also interesting.

Whole heartedly agree. It really captures the family nature of the group and the loneliness of being ostracised from society.

I totally dig this movie. Penelope Spheeris Decline of Western Civilization is an absolute must for any punk fan. And just to plug another great punk film, I adore. Watch Repoman if you've never seen it. And if you have, well watch it again. One of Charlie Sheen's best films.

Love repo man. It’s been a favourite since I saw it back in the 80’s. This one is Sheens brother Estevez though.

You'd probably like DUDES, which is punk meets pure exploitation film, also by Penelope Spheeris. And her documentary that precedes SUBURBIA, THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, is fascinating.

The scene where the girl gets her dress ripped off NEVER would have happened at a show. We had girls in our scene who cane from sexually abusive situations and that would have caused a huge problem. Plus we had feminist crass punk types who would have beaten up the guys who did that. So that scene is some Hollywood BS. Yes, the discrimination is real. The older punks dealt with that constantly. I came from a conservative town and I had lots of problems with people who didn't like how I looked. I constantly got harassed and beaten up by 5 guys at once. The cops didn't do anything to help. They said it was my fault because of how I look. These punk kids today will never know what it was like. It's too acceptable these days. I miss it when punk was dangerous and scared people.

It was a scene that I was too young to even noticed. But the socially acceptable bullying by a community just seems so wrong.

@@manvfilm I don't know why they did that. There was a Hollywood thing in all these movies and TV shows that made punks look bad back then. You had Quincy, Chips, and all these others. Like I said if that happened at a show, all hell would have broken loose. The girls at the show would have went after the guys who did that. We had an open door policy in our scene where everyone was welcome as long as they didn't cause problems.
